Very sad news. I'm actually wearing an Ali t-shirt as I write this, I doubt there's a boxing fan on the planet who doesn't own at least one piece of Ali memorabilia.

I rarely use the word because it's so over-used these days, but Ali was a genuine legend. RIP Champ.

George Foreman rated Cleaveland Williams in his top 3 hardest hitters.

The first fight I ever watched was The Thrilla in Manila and I've been hooked ever since. At the time, my dad was my hero and his hero was Ali, so I grew up thinking he was. An amazing boxer, man and hero.

Ali was not perfect and was very hard on Joe Frazier. But who is perfect? I think Ali is the most important sportsman in the 20th century and transcended sport....

I hope Steve Bunce doesn't announce on his show: "I hear Muhammad Ali is braaaannnn breadddddd"

What a plum

RIP 'The Greatest.'
Very sad news. I've been dreading this day as selfishly I drew some sort of comfort that he was still amongst us hanging on in there. I can't imagine that there can ever be another like him. He's left some utterly wonderful memories.

I've been aware of Ali my whole life. He was like some superman figure on the tele as a child growing up in the 60's. I remember when he came back from his enforced exile thinking how much slower he looked (against Jerry Quarrey in 1970), but he went on to have those huge fights with Foreman and Frazier that helped define boxing in the 70's. He should have retired after the third Frazier fight. It wasn't pretty to watch after that. I was just reading about him watching reruns of that fight and the Foreman one over and over when he became to ill to walk, and his tangled private life with 4 marriages and 9 kids (that he acknowledged) plus one adopted son, but I prefer to think about how kind and self-sacrificing he was, how he never beat anybody up in sparring, prefering to work on defense. They reckon he leaves an estate worth 60M for his family to squabble over (that would have been a lot more if he hadn't given so much away).

Goodbye Ali.
