Kalan always gets proved wrong. Expect a long answer from him where he strays from the subject.

I have talked to Riddick Bowe and he admits that he avoided Lewis and that it damaged his legacy. He told me it was Rock Newman's idea. Bowe ducked Lewis when he threw away the WBC belt rather than fight him. He may have signed to fight him later, but nothing will alter the fact that Bowe avoided Lewis.Tuan_Jim wrote:Wow, for a man who was following boxing as far back as the early 60s, you certainly missed out on some major incident in the 1990s. Sadly Lewis got himself splattered by Oliver McCall and blew the fight.
Does anyone remember 1996 when Riddick Bowe and HBO offered Lewis a hugely lucrative fight to close the Bowe/Holyfield III & Lewis/Morrison mini tourney - and Lewis declined the fight and instead took on Ray Mercer for chump change? Mysterious man, Lennox Lewis.
I remember Holyfield was happy to unify with Lewis in 1994 - but was obliged to defend against Moorer first, who had been delayed for years, and lost. In 1993 Moorer had been happy to take step aside money rather than a shot at Bowe. Very similar to how Lewis in 1996 had been happy to take step aside money rather than a shot at Tyson after his Mercer horror.

Lewis dumped the WBA belt rather than fight Ruiz and instead took on Grant and Botha. Lewis dumped the IBF belt rather than fight Byrd and instead attempted to take on Kirk 'Titties' Johnson. A mighty 18 months after binning the WBC belt Bowe signed to fight Lewis. He later tried fight Lewis in 96, with HBO's backing.
There is no doubt Bowe wanted to fight Lewis. It's just his best laid plans went aglay.

By deferring it, he avoided Lewis. I don't know why you can't accept that. It is a fact after all.Tuan_Jim wrote:He deferred the fight in order to milk the belts and let the Lewis fight get bigger. He doesn't have much money now and the £10 million is long gone, but his legacy will be forever tarnished. He avoided fighting Lewis, simple as that.

No he didn't Keith. He put off a fight as is standard in boxing and which Lewis did more than once. The only avoidance here is your avoidance of context.keithmoonhangover wrote:He said that to me a couple of months back. He told me "Rock said we were bigger than the WBC". Bowe wanted more money. Holyfield was a bigger fight. That being said, he did duck Lennox. It's just laughable to say it was out of fear.

He wanted no part of the man he signed to fight? That makes sense. You and Kalan should collaborate on a thread, you both use the same acrobatics of logic to make your points.keithmoonhangover wrote:Tuan_Jim wrote:No he didn't Keith. He ducked him when he threw away a world title. It's quite simple really. Fight Lewis or lose the belt. Your pretentious delusions are laughable.Tuan_Jim wrote:He wanted no part of the man he signed to fight? That makes sense. Re: Lennox Lewis Avoided Young Tyson
With young Tyson's 2 handed power, awesome combo punching, solid chin and elusiveness he was all wrong for Lennox. Lennox was a hell of a HW but he was susceptible to getting KO'd and one has to believe that Tyson would have worked his way inside that great jab and exposed Lewis's chin.
Re: Lennox Lewis Avoided Young Tyson
Rock Newman and Riddick Bowe tried to paper over the fact they were ducking Lewis because of that massive criticism they received... They pretended they were going to fight him but planned an "out" so they could weasel out of it... Here's part of a story Tuan_Jim posted from “Sanity Preview” 2nd column, 4th paragraph, it states,
“For while Newman confidently stated that the promotion would be staged by Panix in association with his own company, Spencer Promotions, the man who prides himself on the independence of Bowe and himself from major promotional groups appears to have been wrong in stating the Lewis’s regular co-promoters Main Events, would not be involved in the show.
“There were a couple of out-and-out untruths that were said” complained Dan Duva of Main Events after the Lewis-Bowe lines had gone dead. “It was wrong that it was said that Main Events is not involved in the promotion of the Bowe and Lewis fight
“Main Events is Panix Promotions’ co-promoters by contract and I spoke to Panos Eliades before and after the press conference and both times he confirmed to me that our deal will be honored, and that Main Events and Panix will co-promote Lewis-Bowe.
“Spencer are providing the services of Riddick Bowe and that’s their only involvement in the promotion. I have the contract in front of me. The deal didn’t change because Lewis is fighting Riddick Bowe. Rock obviously said a lot of things that weren’t true in that call.”
This is why everybody hated Rock Newman.. He would say things that are flat out lies and just find ways for Bowe to pull out of fights with dangerous opponents.. Newman was one of the most disgusting individuals in the History of Boxing. The Duvas and Frank Maloney hated doing business with Newman and Bowe because they knew they would lie and back out of agreements.. They were only trying to create the impression they want to fight.. If they really wanted to fight Lewis the fight would have actually happened.

In which case be consistent and call Lewis a ducker for ducking Ruiz and vacating the WBA belt, ducking Byrd and vacating the IBF belt, ducking a rematch with Klit, ducking a Bowe fight in 96 and instead taking on a 36 yr old Mercer. He delayed the scary Tua mandatory in favour of milking he title with two easy defences (Remind you of anyone?).keithmoonhangover wrote:He ducked him when he threw away a world title. If you are unwilling to employ context because it disproves your point then you're a fool. If you are unable to comprehend context you're a retard. Personally I think you're somewhere in between.

Your post is all supposition.bnovelist wrote:He's older than Mike Tyson & they sparred as teenagers so why did he turn pro late? Tyson turned pro in 85' so Lewis turning pro 89' would have
meant any chance of a Tyson fight would've happened in 92-93 had Tyson not gone to prison. I know it seems like I'm trolling but this is a serious
issue I have why would he wait 7-8yrs after Mike turned pro to issue a challenge? I really do believe Lewis and his team were like "Hey Lennox,
You Have Great Potential But This Tyson Kid Is a Complete Animal. It's Really Not a Great Idea To Turn Pro Anytime Soon Let Mike Lose Some
Steam. Besides You'll Get a Crack At Winning Gold In Seoul. Relax For Right Now."
The fact is, Tyson was locked up in 1992 & 1993, so they could not have fought then, no matter when Lewis turned pro.
You can speculate all you want about why he stayed as an amateur until '88, but you can't make up things to suit your argument.

Re: Lennox Lewis Avoided Young Tyson
It's not like Lewis made his decision in 1988 to go for the Gold Medal in 1988. He basically made it in late 1984-1985. At the time, Tyson probably was barely on his radar.
Re: Lennox Lewis Avoided Young Tyson
Lewis made his decision to go for the Olympic Gold Medal in 1988 when he failed to win the medal in 1984... It was a life long dream of Lewis to stand on the top of the podium and be presented with the Olympic Gold Medal... "I'm glad I went for it. That moment is something I'll never forget. Even winning the Heavyweight Championship of the World can't compare to it -- because you're competing with athletes from all over the world day after day and you have to keep winning... If you win the Olympic Gold Medal, chances are you're going to be Heavyweight Champion anyway. You know you're the best."
