Got to love Brum fight nights, though. I was at one of those shows and a fight broke out between football fans. They weren’t rival factions, either, as two groups of BCFC fans were kicking off amongst themselves.

I took my little sister to Hatton-Magee years ago and a group of lads threatened us for committing the ultimate crime of scoring Farnell-Groenewald in favour of the away fighter. They asked if I was “One of those posh c*nts” and, ironically, a bunch of Northern Irish lads shouted them down.

Liverpool’s always interesting, on one occasion I was berated for using the toilet as a toilet and delaying the cocaine line (pun intended). Manchester is just as bad, though, as one guy tried forcing some up my nose when I said “No thanks, I’ve never used it” after he kindly offered me a line as I left the toilet.

It’s not unique to boxing. I went to a Stone Roses concert recently and from ages 20-50 the behaviour of some of the blokes was an embarrassment.
I prob got the opponent wrong, but remember it being Mag 7 and Hall's supporters in the tale I read.

Worst atmosphere for me ironically was Khan vs Lawton at Nottingham Arena. Usually it's not a bad venue for fight nights - but the tension and vibe was unlike anything I've seen before ever.

Absolutely idiotic to put "Khan's army" in with a boat load of Stoke supporters after playing Forest that day.

I saw an Asian couple and they had their son and daughter with them, they were aged about 10. The kids were crying and they'd obviously badly misjudged the event as being suitable for seeing their hero Amir - and it was Khan's army that was leading the screaming and swearing. Super hostile bunch of absolute tools.

We ushered the family to stand with us as we had corralled a corner of the underpass. It came very close to a full-scale riot at one point - and the security would have stood no chance at all.

Like you say I think you get that kind of dickhead behaviour at any type of big event.

I do find small hall shows are better and you don't get that type of idiots there but can get some nasty people at them depending on who's on the bill what area's/people represented etc.
I can’t recall any real problems at small hall shows. I used to really like the Sunday afternoon ones and, ironically, it was at one of them that I had some minor bother with some guys who were still drunk from the night before and kept kicking my chair then singing “It wasn’t me!” in that daft Shaggy voice. Then they realised I was writing notes so they’d time their kicks when I was trying to jot stuff down.

Two fights in, Jamie Moore came over and said “Hello” so all the lads behind asked for a photo with him etc. They were perfect gentlemen for the rest of the day. One guy kept telling me what type of punch landed and when “Because I noticed you were writing away, fella” and another one came out with that old “You should write a book about me!” chestnut.

Scariest thing I’ve seen didn’t involve crowd trouble. It was at Haye-Barrett and some lone nut was dancing in the stands. For some reason he decided to leap over the concrete barrier, presumably without realising there was a substantial drop on the other side. We heard the thud of him hitting the concrete floor and the ambulance people rushed over to him. I’m not sure what happened next as a fight was taking place and the next round had started.

Oh year, I'd forgotten about that incident. Remember there being a bit of a kerfuffle, but didn't see clearly what had happened.

From a security point of view, it's not easy to deal with. The onus should be on the promoters and fighters to resist the temptation of building almost every contest up as a grudge match. It sells more tickets but it breeds hostility.

Imagine if Warrington ever fights anyone with an actual following at that arena in Leeds. Hearn should be made to hire more security.

Imagine how many seats are going to get ripped out when he loses too. Love a bit of criminal damage do Leeds.

Bit of a tricky one to negotiate that.

I'd say that boxing would do well to move away from the partisan terrace mentality, it's rather old hat, boxing should be more about appreciating the spectacle of the fighters, than slavishly following 'your guy' - and hating the opposition.

I remember going to see David Walker get torn apart by Roman Karmazin, and on the bus back from the Arena, got into a conversation about the fight with a Walker fan, who kept saying that Karmazin was lucky, and that Walker would normally have mullered him, when I pointed out the fact that Karmazin was a world class fighter, and one of the real danger men of the light middleweight division, you could literally see steam coming out of his ears, he started getting very arsey, and mildly threatening, he just couldn't accept the fact that the better man won, and that there was no shame in losing to Karmazin - total idiocy at it's finest.

Yeah if he fights Selby at Elland Road I'm gonna definitely teach myself to talk with a Welsh accent and go. Can't think of anything more fun than lording it in front of all them Leeds divs when Warrington's KO'd.

Their football lads aren't up to much anyway like to think they've got some great reputation but talk to most people who've ever been involved in that and they're known for smashing things up and doing scum bag things like spitting at people as you mention above.

Just ask the few that where KTFO in Wolverhampton a couple of years ago.

It`s a UK thing without a doubt. It seems to be in the blood.

There is a lot of shit goes down elsewhere of course, but that chav mentality does seem to be a particularly British phenomenon.

I`ve used the example before but me on my mates go on lads trips away to various cities around Europe. We drink in their boozers, expect them to understand our language, chat up their women and never had a problem ever. We don`t act like muppets and we are all mid 40`s but we are not choirboys either.

I imagine a group of say 8 Germans, Czechs, Poles or Dutch, speaking their own language to the bar staff in a boozer in Wakefield where I`m originally from, chatting up the local birds and being loud. They`d be beaten to a pulp before they knew it. Sad state of affairs.

We as a nation are a bunch of ignorant, intolerant pudenda at the end of the day.

Absolutely agree with you. Us Brits have robbed everything, going back hundreds and hundreds of years. Its instilled in us to "Take over" when going anywhere.

I personally try and look out for my fellow man, let people nip in front of me at a busy bar, hold the door open for people who are behind me. Bloody top bloke me :D .

I have to say, on a side note, I have just come back from New York and there are some rude arseholes out there mind....

No way its just a UK thing obviously the bars you go in would tend to be City Centre / touristy bars. Plenty of other nationalities wouldn't put up with that stuff.

Outside of London, it's pretty much true sadly, obviously not everyone from small towns is a coont, but unfortunately the mob mentality, and the fact the coonts tend to stand out more, gives that impression.

I remember entering Kettering at kicking out time, and there were people pointing at me in the street screaming 'who the fornicate are you, don't know your face mate,' was like invasion of the body snatchers, there were people fighting all over the place, was like dodge city, never been more relieved to find a cab office in my life.

I'd say 'inspired' is a very strange term to use about Kettering in any context.

It was a mate of mine's birthday, her family had house on a farm a little way outside of kettering town, so we alighted there to get cabs to the farm from the train, Kettering was certainly not our intended destination.

The Kettering story reminds me a bit of when we were in Newport on a Friday night lash up (Millennium stadium for Rugby the next day)

It was like the Star Wars pub everywhere we went. Strange looking blokes smacking the knackers out of each other for no apparent reason. Living abroad (Norway) I just don`t see that anymore. To be fair I love Newport, reminds me of home.

I was standing in the taxi queue with an Aussie mate after the night club (it was called Delilahs - no kidding) and this bird heard his accent and asked him where he was from. Then she said "I`ve never met anyone from australia before, then again when I think about it I`ve never been outside of Newport before" with that she stumbled into her taxi with one of the star wars pub blokes, showing her split monkey`s head as she fell in head first.

I come from a place just as bad, so I don`t mind it at all, but when you have lived away from it for years, it takes me getting used to again.

Definitely mate. When I was a boy my dad got stabbed to within a quarter of an inch of his life. Stabbed multiple times and one of the wounds was literally fractions from piercing his heart. An English bloke and his missus ended up having a pint in a rough bar in Port Talbot they didn't know it was rough, it looks like a cocktail bar from the outside.
A group of 8 lads bashed them up because of their accent.
The poshest pub in port talbot is wetherspoons by a country mile.

Froch-Groves at Wembley had its fair share of coked up knobs. Entering the toilets was like entering Mad Max. Lots of tarts dressed up like hookers. I went to the event with my stepdad and it was his first boxing event.

I remember John Ryder walked past me and I'm about 5'11/6ft and he seemed bloody tiny. He looked about 5'7 in person. Anyway the actual event itself went by pretty well in regards to trouble and we got chatting to a couple of young guys from London and they were a good laugh.

We got a coach back to Kent as part of the package of the ticket and that's where trouble did occur. A bunch of about 7 or 8 coked up guys, 3 or 4 who were huge were seriously rowdy and obviously looking for trouble. One started kicking the back of my stepdad's chair and shouting shit. I didn't know what o do at this point. Luckily it never went beyond that point but it was intimidating atmosphere all the way back to put it mildly. They kept shouting at the coach driver to play specific music and at one point we had the opening dance track from Blade blaring out (the track in the nightclub scene right at the beginning of the film) down the motorway. Then when we were all about to get off the coach when we reached our destination- one scrawny little fornicator from the same group starts shouting in my face and asks me if I've had a good night. I reply yeah and then he screeches "me too, I'm coked off my fornicating nut!" It was said in a pretty hostile way though lol.

I dunno if anyone else experienced anything like that at Froch-Groves 2.

Reading through this thread just convinces me even more that as a nation, we are a bunch of utter pudenda. It appears to be a working class phenomenon as well.

You don`t tend to see little Lord Fantelroy and his bumchums running through the streets going up to strangers, getting an inch from their faces and screaming "Are you calling my pint a pudendum"

All this football bollocks "we ran em out the graaaaaaaand innit", "you want some you mug cahnt ?", "bosh, bish, bash innit cahnt" it sickens me. What a load of sheep like waaankers

Get most of those runts on their own, away from the safety of their gang of dicknosed mates and put them in a boxing ring in front of other people and they`d shat out bricks.

England, Scotland and Wales, it`s all the same. It`s a British disease.

Help to stamp it out, YOU can make a difference. Maim a chav today.

Yeah Glasgow and the surrounding areas has a real problem. Seems to be part of the culture which is worrying. Two personal friends of mine have been stabbed and killed and I know of scores more. Even though I grew up around it I still don't understand it. There was a big group of us growing up and most of us are still close now and not one of us would've ever even considered carrying a knife. You knew who all the ones to keep away from were. Most of the people that carried were known for it.
