I'm not familiar with that term. Is it universal?..... or is it associated more with British or American lingo?

It goes back to the beginning of prize fighting so I guess it would be British. The gentry would throw coins into the ring as an extra reward for a good fight. Then it just carried on into the modern game I believe.
