Strange comment. So are we not supposed to discuss it at all? Would be a bit odd considering most of us watched the fight yesterday and have a natural concern for the boxer involved?
Happy to explain. And your comment is fair, especially in light of TV viewing as you say. But mine is too. Rubberneckery and concern can look similar at first glance. In the above instance, my take was “this thread isn’t moving fast enough to keep me interested”.
And, to be clear, I don’t attach any ill-will to the commenter’s post. If things are a “bit quiet” for him then go for a wee walk or do a few press-ups...or something. Right now, our being kept up to speed is neither here nor there :TU:

I don’t pray, but I have nothing but kind thoughts for the lad and his family and close-ones. I wish him a full recovery, as we all do.
Your passive-aggressiveness is hilarious. Been short changed by one of the brass's you frequent or something which has put you in a bad mood?

They never have any change, don’t be silly. Should women not be free to choose how to make their living? Especially when for some it’s their only chance of a living!
Frequent means often. Anyway...let’s keep the place tidy shall we, in light of the thread title! :TU:

Gutknecht has had surgery on his brain due to swelling, the operation is at this stage considered to have been successful he is obviously still under heavy sedation and nothing further available at this time

Had it been stopped the usual suspect would have been saying it was stopped too early and having a go at TOC.

Hope he gets well; very brave fighter.

Dont agree at all

This sounds like a vintage mercy stoppage. Fighter has nothing left is not gonna win by KO. Nobody would have complained

Some people would have. They always do.

Makes you wonder if there should be some kind of outclassed rule

People generally complain about stoppages when it is a competitive fight, not when it is a one-sided beating.

There would not have been many complaints.

That’s a very interesting notion that :TU: It would never be allowed to come to pass “professional boxing” “man’s game” and all that....
I believe that in the Amateur sport the refs are more merciful/ sensible, although I suppose it must vary hugely, night to night, area to area..

I remember thinking from round 10 or 9 that te corner should pull him out. Apart from 1 round he got an absolute hiding and when his eye closed it was time to pull him out.

Who cares ? Any normal person would know clearly there was NO point in allowing him to carry on late with that bad eye injury and shipping heavy shots to the head.

Terrible corner work.

Poor refereeing too

There's a new Board rule stating that if a boxer is 10 points behind the referee MUST stop the contest. Didn't see the fight, could he have been 10 points down at any stage?

How can that be enforced with the scores being given after the fight?

Sadly not the last round made it 10 pts difference on 2 cards.

They is no getting away from it, as we all seem to think, it should have been stopped, he barely did anything other than run the last three rounds and Groves as he would kept hitting him to the head trying to get the stoppage. Clearly no one could foresee what has happened but the fact remains somehow we need to give our sport the chance of trying to avoid this happening.

For me I would try a 4th ref/judge outside the ring whose sole responsibility is to be viewing the fight (with knowledge of the scores) and looking out for this sort of thing and making the decision if needed that the fight be stopped, pretty much like a doctor does for a cut. Obviously the referee can still stop it whenever he wants prior to the 4th official stopping it but it might at least give us a chance and also show that the sport is trying to do something.

I believe this would take away the intent that a corner may view a fight in on behalf of there man and keep him in there for too long and also give the referee some back up if he too is just not seeing what the rest of the arena and on tv seemed to see.

I said last night that Gutknecht puzzled me in that he did 12 hard rounds after slimming down to super-middle after spending the last 6 years at LH. Wondered why he hadn't boxed at SM all along. Now reading what has happened to him makes me wonder how much making the lower weight took out of him at 34. Should he have been allowed to do that?

Stupid fecking corner should have saved their man, I was saying last night what a dumbass brave corner the poor bloke had, beat up to hell & they had not the slightest inclination to save him ...
Agreed :salut:

The way I saw it...the poor guy was getting totally worked over by Groves and when Gutknecht was firing back it was just desperate, courageous and aimless flurries rather than anything that was ever going to realistically turn the fight around.

Gutknecht's a warrior and has a rep for coming on strong late but he's also 34 - had some hard, hard nights - and frankly he was simply bravely pushing out stuff blindly just to stop himself from getting hit flush any more.

Not sure what the 'feck his corner were about - they seemed to believe their guy was made of titanium and Groves was just slapping - and they could not even keep their side of the ring dry for their fighter. Place looked like a bloody swamp :shame:

Its a fine line between satisfying the bloodthirsty who believe that a fight can always be turned around ala Jackson v Castro, and the more sensitive masses that can be turned off more easily than the hard core fan by such sights

Brian Hughes' stoppage of Rob Reid against Lacy is one of the best I've seen. If only there were more like him.

I like the idea of this outclassed rule, but 10 rounds is too high. Eight?

Definitely should have been pulled out after the 9th I think it was when the eye ballooned up and clearly some bad damage had been done to the eye. i never like to see fighters carrying on like that unless they are in the lead - as it was he was massively behind on the cards so there was really no point.

So many paralells with the Eubank Jnr vs Blackwell fight.
- Channel 5
- Wembley Arena
- Badly swollen eye and fighter sustained a beating
- Could and should have been mercifully pulled out around 9th-10th round
- Fighter collapses and needs brain surgery/sedation
- Same hospital

Channel 5 must be feeling very sore right now about this venture into boxing. They've been really unlucky when you think how many fights are shown on other channels and how rare something like this is.

Thoughts definitely with Gutknecht (and family), there's nothing worse than a brave corner not recognising when to protect their man.

It might just be one of those things that comes with the territory. Kind of like horses falling and dying at cheltenham every year. Horses arent people to be fair. If jockeys were dying at cheltenham every year something would be done.

In situations like blackwell and gutneckt there was a clear case of the fighter way behind on the cards and outclassed. If a fighter can be saved 2-3 rounds of hard clubbing shots at least, that would really help, surely.

Briggs vs Vitali where he ended up in intensive care is another one. He was lucky to make it through. Boxing rules should be in place to stop fights like that automatically

Dark destroyer

During a contest where the referee is the only scorer it's his duty to stop it when the 10 point difference is reached.
When it's a judges contest, the man recording the scores advises the ref when a 10 point difference is reached on ALL scorecards.

Briggs was only in intensive care for precautionary measures - there was never any suggestion he was close to death.

Bit of a stupid rule isn’t it? Basically you can have a good hiding for half an hour to rack up a deficit like that.
