Now is Bernard Hopkins and ALL TIME GREAT boxer? No, I can't go there. The streak of title defenses and longevity gets him on the waiting list to the party but he's not getting in the door if it's my party. I'll point to his unappealing style and tactics inside the ring, the lack of opposition during his reign
Would that be the reign when he beat de la Hoya, Trinidad and Johnson, or the other reign, when he beat jones, tarver, wright, pavlik and pascal?
So Bhop beat a couple of welterweights that came up in weight at the end of their career. Big Deal. Does that mean that Terry Norris is great because he defeated SRL? You have to put more stock into the guys that Bhop defeated in their primes.
What most people don't remember with Bhop's career are the losses or how about when he faked that injury to get out of that first fight with Chad Dawson and then lost the rematch. How about when he took on Calzaghe? How about Bhop's inability to defeat J. Taylor in back to back fights? How did he do against prime Roy Jones Jr? Do you see where i'm going here?
Too many losses to too many people in their prime. We can't just let everyone be considered "GREAT". Why can't we just cal those people very good and leave the great for the top of the top.

We can but BHop is not one of "those people." He is one of the GOATs.

Do you know what as GREAT? Watching Bhop get shot out of that ring in slow motion. That was great.

Hopkins was boring and dirty fighter, but he was one of the greatest fighters of the last 30 years. I'd only put Floyd, Manny, Holyfield, Whitaker and RJJ ahead of him in that timespan.

He had just achieved his biggest win when I first started watching, the Tito victory, and I got to see him break the Middleweight title defense record, and then go on to become a 3 time Light Heavyweight Champion, and break the record for the Oldest Champion of all time both with a lineal title win, and with an alphabet title win.
What a career and journey it's been.
Amen brother well said.

Well, he went out head over heals, so to speak. His exit will be remembered as well as his signature victory over Tito.
I was never a Hopkins fan. He's an X-con, and could be rather racial in dialog. But there's not doubt he was a very good boxer.

I am assuming that you are referring to diddy. I had not one negative word for Smith. I had him up 69-65.

To bad how it ended i was hoping the best for a legend of the ring. You has boxing fan should recognize the legacy. We all criticsize the champions who take it easy but B-Hop took anyone anywhere anytime. What can you ask from a champion?

He's not losing to a one-dimensional, straight ahead boxing novice. Power alone has never beaten Bernard. Why would it now? Hopkins will throw 1-2 punches at a time and land almost everything he throws against this kid. Then smother Smith before he can return fire.
Good call

I didn't see that fight as close at first or after two re-watches. I didn't give Hopkins points for holding, bending over, turning his back, using his shoulder, etc.

Rookie mistake here Leonard Squigman. You don't get credit for SHOULD HAVE or COULD HAVE facts to support your argument. That's equivalent to kids arguing in the playground with "ya so? Ya sO? Ya so? "
Look, Bhop was way better than average and had a fantastic career. I just don't call it a GREAT career because I just don't hand those out to people because they happened to fight in my generation. There were too many hiccups along the way for me to consider him great. I take into account his style, his appeal and his record in big fights. And what you have there is a very good career, not great.

Call me stupid or anything but B-Hop had a great career. Look at the name on his resume!! Joe Calzaghe would of lost a few time if he had so many good name on his resume. So if you judge Hopkins career on is defeat and last 3 years your are just wrong. I agree he never was the most gifted guy but he worked is way to greatness and deserve to recognize has an all time great.
