While the opponent is ok for Harley I just dont agree with bringing over a Bulgarian when there are opponents in the UK that are keeping the BBBoC in money. There are 115 British middleweights in this country and thet have to pluck out of thin air a Bulgarian. Where do they find these boxers? Why do we need Eastern Europeans taking money from lads in this country that are perfectly able to fight and possibly can do with the income? Is having a Bulgarian on your record some sort of toughness symbol?
Whats wrong with Dean Croft for example
http://boxrec.com/boxer/659935 or Tommy Carter
http://boxrec.com/boxer/763666 ? Arent they good enough for the young Benn boxer? honestly the BBBoC need to look at employing someone to oversee that lads in this country get a payday at this stage of a boxers career rather than letting shite through the doors to go down in 1 round and take the wage packet. Boils my piss. BBBoC know eff all.
What can the BBBoC do to stop this? If a manager/coach wants to bring in guys from abroad for whatever reason then that is their prerogative. There is nothing that the BBBoC can do about it especially when it is an EU country as if they tried to stop these imports for coming in it would be classed as a restriction of trade and they could be taken to court.
I totally agree that BBBoC boxers should be used but the truth is that fights can only be made if there is 2 willing parties ready to make a fight and it doesn't matter what the BBBoC say or do they can't force managers to make fights unless they hold a title governed by the BBBoC.

I understand what you are saying but was any British opponent ever looked for? I think yes there will be circumstances where oversea opposition has to be used but in this case and many others similar im sure a Brit could have been found. But at the end of the day was any approached.
There is a large number of fighters here who a possibly available. This Bulgarian will bring nothing of substance to the fight.

Harley Benn has never even had an amateur fight, who do you expect him to be matched against?

You are telling me a British 'journeyman' or losing novice wouldnt be interested in a 10k fight? I know i have mental issues but that comment is bizarre.
Gotta say that oddball is always good for a (unintentional) laugh.

Have a look at the british rankings there are 115 take a look at 50 onwards can you find a suitable opponent?

They are clearly playing it very safe with him.

If he can't find a suitable opponent from a list of 115 boxers then it would beg the question how he was given a licence in the first place?

Thats quite clear. While im looking forward to Benn im hoping the Bulgarian brings a fight with him. I hope the Bulgarian can hit.

Oh absolutely, however from stories that have been told in the past, I wouldn't bet my house on getting the cash off him.

Its not just the usual suspect who pulls these kind of strokes.
I remember reading "Looking for a fight" a few years a go about the journalist who wanted a pro fight - I am sure he mentions names of people who failed to pay the full purse on the night.

Why does Camp Eddie pay so poorly? If you're not ppv, so you don't "own the show", it seems like you don't get a lot. His poor record in purse bids backs that up, too.

It upsets me that lads in this country dont get a look in and this is not the first example. The BBBoC should clamp down on this sort of thing but they are so inept full of old duffers who collectively know nothing about boxing.
There is nothing the board can do, even if they wanted to, which they shouldn't. There aren't enough domestic journeymen about and they're frequently unreliable, as posted above, leading to mad scrambles to find opponents at short notice, which usually end in a eastern European opponent anyway.
Just because a fighter is from this country doesn't mean they have some sort of divine right to a payday in the early stages of a prospects career, not like the crowd are paying to see them. If the promoter/matchmaker wants to bring in a fighter from abroad then they're perfectly free to do so, as they should be. In this case he probably shouldn't be fighting this Bulgarian because the likelihood is that he's absolutely terrible and he should have a better opponent, where that opponent is from is absolutely irrelevant.
Where does this whole give domestic fighters a payday shite end? Should all British world champions make regular defences against domestic opponents to give them a payday too?
Its not the point 'where does the domestic opposition end' ive said european oppostion has to come into play at some point. Im not stupid to think British boxers have to fight British boxers until they run dry. But there is no excuse in this case and many cases like this. You are telling me a promoter in this country cannot locate a boxer out of 115 middleweights in this country and how many light middleweights? There must be at least 50 or 60 boxers in this country adiquate to fight a debutant. And you are telling me they are unreliable? When they are a stones throw away? I dont believe it for one minute. Harley Benn could fight 5 or 6 before they decide to look elsewhere.
Also i never suggested a boxer has a devine right.
Why should they get a fighter from here though? If they want an opponent from abroad then they can go and get one.
They are unreliable, just because they're local doesn't change that. As has already been explained in the thread, getting a journeyman from this country is worth jack shit until about 48 hours before the fight, when you can start to have some confidence that they're going to take the fight, otherwise there's always a chance that they'll be suspended because they've got several fights booked in at once and they get stopped in one, or they get offered better money for another fight and take that. There's 115 middleweights in the country, how many of them are journeymen? That's what actually matters, not how many 4-0 or whatever record ticket sellers there are because they won't take the fight and won't be in consideration anyway.
Given that it's cheaper to use a domestic opponent, if it was possible they would do.

Neither would a British fighter, journeymen don't bring anything to the fight other than turning up, going the distance and taking their money, no one's paying to see them, no one cares who's in the other corner at that stage of the home fighter's career.

Actually, Expe, the example he gave, Croft, would come to win, 100% guaranteed. And probably would. He can fight. He doesn't have a journeyman mentality, he's just up against it all the time. He's been robbed once and a few were a lot closer than the scorecard suggested. The 1-0 guy who was asked about for Conor, absolutely no question he'd be coming to beat him up, he's got a great business and does it for the love. He's 3-0 now.

I told everyone when Conor Benn swerved Luke Kehler first time around that Luke would bring it. When they fought, he really did, I got 4-1 on Benn points. Journeymen aren't idiots. If you're going in with an Olympian, yes they might tuck up, but with someone like Benn they'll give it go, he's not very good.

I can see him being moved very slowly in terms of the progression of opponents fight by fight. I did expect him to be a hell of a lot more active tho. Boxing on every Matchroom show and possibly some of the fight pass ones too vs the UK and Europe's journeymen.

How can you class a boxer as a journeyman who has a record 2 and 1? I wouldnt say a record of that staus is journeyman material. There are many fighters in this country who are starting out just like Benn. There are many many fighters with records of a win or 2 and a few losses, having 4 or 5 fights and only winning 2 or 3 does not make a boxer a journeyman. If these British boxers with records of 2 and 1 or 4 and 2 are classed as journeymen then the promoters in this country have made that happen because these young boxers cant get fights.

Good point.
I am not sure what point Expe is trying to make - it seems as though he is happy for novice boxers to face opponents who are very carefully selected in mis-matches (and has the lack of self awareness to criticize the matchmaking of other organisations).
Where there is a large pool of boxers of varying ability (and ambition) in the UK, then why wouldn't a promoter look to use a UK based boxer - he might even bring a few punters with him, family and mates who want to watch him box Nigel Benns son etc. I am sure the low level imports don't bring much support with them.
