Is anyone able to supply any info on Khan opponent?

Exactly how good is this guy? has he had any notable results, and against whom? I appreciate these kind of amatuer stats can be bastard hard to find, but if anyone has a low down on Khan's opponent that'd be cool.

Earlier this year the greek lost 21-6 to Aydun Selchuk (TUR) in the pr olympic tournament in Athens (The one where Kindelan beat Khan)

I see this guy made the QF in the pre-Olympics Test.

60 kg: Selcuk Aydin, TUR, dec. Marius Kaperonis, GRE, 21-6

Got beaten easily enough by the Turk, Aydin.


Kindelin then fought Aydin in the semis, and won a "walkover" result.

I also found these results from separate tournaments I think

Adrian Alexandru (ROM) beat Marios Kaperonis (GRE), 34:10 3rd April 2004 Strandja cup in Plodiv, Bulgaria

Amir Khan, England, beat Adrian Alexandru, Romania, 46-27 (Bulgarian tournament 2nd round) 4th April 2004 Pre-Olympic Qualifier

Maybe the same tournament.

The draw is interesting in that Kindelan is in the other half but Amir Khan will have to meet someone who has had a bye (i.e one less fight) in his half.

Drawing a line through the form would suggest Amir wins comfortably. Not that straightforward of course, but the draw could have been far worse...

Khan better stop the Greek otherwise he might get robbed. Nothing against the Greeks whatsoever - I'd say the same if he was fighting a host boxer wherever it was.

I quite agree. I can well imagine every Greek punch counting for two points or something

Having said that, the current controversy surrounding Greek athletes would imply the IOC will be keeping a stern eye on Greek competitors. Hopefully we won't see Khan get "robbed"...but I hope he's a good 10 points up with a few seconds to go... (and frankly, he should be)

Khan's odds have come in following the draw.

He was 8/1 for gold on Sportingodds.com yesterday. Into 6/1 now...

I think that this is the second to worse draw he could have. The crowd will
be cheeering everytime the Greek throws a shot and Olympic boxing
is well known for its dodgy decsions. Does the 15 point mercy rule still
apply for these games?

The crowd won't be cheering if the Greek is getting a battering.

The crowd could cheer for me all they want fighting Bernard Hopkins. I still wouldn't win.

Khan will know what he has to do...and he'll do it.

I'm not sure about whether this is a good draw or not. The potential for a robbery is there, all Khan can do is try to take it out of everyone elses hands by winning inside the distance.

On the plus side, depending on his performance and how he handles the match (presuming he wins) he could get the crowd on his side for later bouts, which might give him a slight edge when the fights get tougher.

Remembering the crowd for Sydney's opening bouts it might be easier to put the crowd in the booths.

Yes I was thinking the same, no idea what crowds will be like for the early rounds in Greece, but I don't remember big crowds in Sydney.
So the Cuban and American are in the other half by the looks of it. But you wouldn't exaclty be praying to meet a Greek in the first round.

Yet again, the top group is totally wide open. I'd look for the winner of the Diaz-Yeleyov fight to get the bronze. The second group doesn't have Kindelan, but is really tough. You have Stilianov, Kate, Selcuk and Khan all in there - the cream of the European crop - plus the Asian champion Baik. Kindelan rules the third group - shouldn't be challenged too much. Escobedo could win twice, but would have to beat Kindelan to medal. The bottom group is open and will provide another surprise medalist - this could be Australia's best chance to nick a bronze behind Anthony Little.

I can't dismiss how easily Khan won the World juniors in Jeju. The Yordenis Ugas result was a fantastic one for Amir. The Cuban is highly thought of and has pushed Khan's arch rival, Super Mario Kindelan, close in a previous contest. Apparently Amir handled him with relative ease.

Regarding the Greek judges I;m beginning to get a little worried. I've just seen an Aberzaijan boxer beat a Greek in middleweight by one point but at times the Greek was getting points without throwing a punch. Perhaps they should make the buzzers the judges press cheer proof.

Khan needs to definately win big or he will get jobbed for sure...everyone seemed to be intent on keeping Kindelan on the other side of the draw which is true. He will not meet Kindelan until the Semi's, but i think Khan really needs to focus on getting that far first as there are some nifty little fighters at this weight, the odds reflect that he is not perceived as one of the favourites for a start.

The Beeb have just been giving him the big build up. They're showing his fight at 1.45 last I looked, so it'll be delayed - they might decide to show it live at last minute I guess.

I've got Eurosport on at work, and I think they're showing lightweight boxing from 11.30ish - so we'll see him live on there. I'll post when I see him coming to the ring.

No probs, I'll keep an eye out - there's a very pleasing game of women's volley ball on at the moment. I think one of the coaches is Swiss Tony. 8)
