Yeah he did in May 2012, just before he was handed the exclusive contract with SKY. 2 months earlier he put on Kelly Brook Vs. Matthew Hatton.dirk2686 wrote:Didn't Hearn promote Froch v Bute on Sky?
Gotta be wary about someone like Hearn, after all his dad done the same and he's a bitter old wanker.JimJim2009 wrote:I think Eddie knows just how to play social media and Ifilm, and all the pxss taking of himself is a clever trick. Occasionally, jumping between Ifilm interviews with him and then the other parties, you get a glimpse of what the behind the scenes Eddie may be like. For example Eddie made a big play about not ripping off fans at the 02 with inflated ticket prices for GGG/Eubank. Sounded great and genuine. I then saw Eubank Snr say that Eddie had proposed inflating the ticket prices. Now, if that is the case (and I don't think Eddie ever outright denied it) the argument shifts from not hiking up ticket prices in principle, to two different parties failing to agree on just how much you hike them up. Which is entirely understandable as this is a business, but it shows Eddie's initial gambit in a new light, as he was taking the moral high ground and put the boot in first on this point. I imagine he is very skilled at raising issues behind the scenes, in a way that, if it all goes tits up, the teflon effect applies to some degree.TheGingerBomber wrote:I'm not in love with Eddie Hearn but I think he's mostly genuine. Like people say, he's done well with Bellew and Crolla, and if he makes a superstar out of Okolie like he's done with AJ, he'll have shown himself to be capable again.
Frank needs to push these so called future world champs into the limelight.
I'm talking, Anthony Yarde, Lerrone Richards, Mitchell Smith! Match them tough!
The interviews with Eddie and Fwank are always entertaining, I do wonder if basically they're the same, but one is a bit rough at social media, and the other is just more savvy.
Would love him to get it in order just thought it was a good topic like.chad wrote:Yeah he did in May 2012, just before he was handed the exclusive contract with SKY. 2 months earlier he put on Kelly Brook Vs. Matthew Hatton.dirk2686 wrote:Didn't Hearn promote Froch v Bute on Sky?
I remember reading later in 2012 these where his 2 big audition events. He smashed both which persuaded SKY he was their man.
Here's the announcement back in August 2012:
http://www.skysports.com/boxing/news/12 ... w-sky-deal
Look at the stable back then. Biggest names where Carl Froch, Kell Brook, Darren Barker, Tony Bellew and Carl Frampton but only Froch was world level. Launched the new deal with only 16 fighters on his books. Amazing how much talent he poached in the 18 months after that photo. Just checked Warren's website. He has a staggering 61 fighters on his books just now.
As I said earlier lets give Warren time. Plenty of time for him to get his house in order over the next 18 months.
I see Josh Leather is fighting Philip Sutcliffe Knr, I don't much about either but that can only be a good fight for Frank and British boxing.Manchester Hitman wrote:We've already seen a vast improvement in terms of the venues Frank is booking. Gone are the leisure centres and in comes the arenas such as the ones he has announced for the first cards...
BT will also be adding weight to the production and marketing qualities of the shows..
As others have said, Frank has signed a lot of
New fighters who I'm interested to see develope over the next few years
Guys like, Anthony Yarde, Duboius, Lerrone Richards, Vijinder Singh, the Leather Broa etc are all going places IMO.
Things are looking good for Warren but it will
take time
Dont forget though matchroom was already est and at the time of eddie's first year, sky had parted company with maloney, hatton and warren so the world was his oyster and still to this day there isnt one fighter that eddie has promoted from scratch and turned them into a star, frank has. Joshua would of been a star of boxing even if steve woods would of signed him. For me if frank was willing to lose money on his own channel id of gone to terrestrial tv and built my stable up on itv or bbc or even channel 5,ok he might of started on a crap deal with them but when the figures would of came in the channel would of had to up their ££ in the contract negotiations. The thing is because they all had it so good with sky, going back to terrestrial tv would of been a massive loss in revenue but these are business men and i reckon franks channel has lost him millions since it startedchad wrote:All we can do is give Warren time to see how the next 12 to 18 months play out. He's put on some decent cards so far but nothing exceptional. He's signed about 15 new fighters who will be interesting to watch plus he's got a bunch of fighters hovering at European and World level. I think having BT on board will make a difference. They will certainly be pushing and promoting the 20 fights on their channel. Also have a feeling they will have a massive say in terms of production and presentation.
I know people will draw comparisons between Hearn and Warren. Hearn is on top of his game but it has taken him nearly 5 years to get there. In the summer of 2012 SKY binned Maloney and Hatton and made Hearn their sole promoter. Whilst Hearn was already acquiring talent it still took him nearly 24 months to build the bulk of the stable we recognise today. Warren could of course continue to add more recognised names over the next 12 to 18 months just like Hearn did. For comparison purposes here's a look at the first 12 months of shows Eddie put on for SKY Sports:
08-09-12 - Lee Purdy Vs. Gumersindo Lucas Carrasco
22-09-12 - Carl Frampton Vs. Steve Molitor
06-10-12 - Prizefighter
20-10-12 - Kell Brook Vs. Hector David Saldivia
03-11-12 - Prizefighter
17-11-12 - Carl Froch Vs. Yusaf Mack
08-12-12 - Darren Barker Vs. Kerry Hope
19-01-13 - Prizefighter
09-02-13 - Kiko Martinez Vs. Carl Frampton
23-02-13 - Prizefighter
09-03-13 - Darren Barker Vs. Simone Rotolo
30-03-13 - Tony Bellew Vs. Issac Chilemba
20-04-13 - Brian Rose Vs. Joachim Alcine
11-05-13 - Ricky Burns Vs. Jose A Gonzalez
18-05-13 - Prizefighter
29-06-13 - Anthony Crolla Vs. Gavin Rees
06-07-13 - Prizefighter
13-07-13 - Viorel Simion Vs. Lee Selby
Eddie put on a total of 18 shows on SKY Sports, 6 of which where Prizefighter. I watched all of these and remember enjoying the 2 Frampton shows along with Crolla Vs. Rees. Crolla also faced Derry Matthews in a classic on the undercard of Tony Bellew Vs. Issac Chilemba.... I think. Other than that I remember the first year being very dissappointing.
Warren is down but not out. I'm sure he'll be able to match or better Eddie's debut year as the sole promoter on SKY. I'm sure we're going to see plenty more twists and turns. All I know is as a boxing fan who watches SKY Sports and B0xnati0n, the domestic scene is about to get a lot more interesting.
Very true. I'm struggling to think of 1 fighter who turned pro with Hearn who hadn't already had exposure from either fighting at the Olympics, Commonwealth Games or being part of team GB in general. Boxers who would have already received decent exposure on SKY Sports and the BBC with a existing fanbase already in their local areas and social media. I dont think he can, every star he has ir has had was with a rival promoter and skys cash lured them to matchroom, was already with matchroom and daddy built them up or like u say was exposed frim olympics. I would of loved eddie to fall flat on his snake eyed face,i know frankie can be abit of a snake but eddie has taken it to another level i feelchad wrote:Very true. Would love to see Eddie turn some truly unknowns into stars.... if he can.
I think it just takes time to turn someone from their debut into a star. It's 3/4 years since he signed the exclusive deal with Sky. Calazaghe had fought for 13 years before his breakout fight with Lacy. He was well known to boxing fans but was still fighting in front of a few thousand fans.chad wrote:Very true. With the might of sky sports u mean, how do you think hearn would of done if sky pulled the plug on matchroom boxing aswell? Lets not kid ourselves here the only reason matchroom was kept was daddy had snooker darts and pool on sky sports too so if they pulled the boxing daddy might of took his ball home. Bellew was with frankie and brook was with kelly bellew had fought for a world title and im sure brook had been offered a world title fight but didnt feel ready so thats not eddie building them up,what about naseem? How long did it take from pro to steve robinson? Frank took him to the top of boxing as he did with calzaghe but calzaghe lost a lot of years through injuries and not wanting to travel to the states till the top fighter hit late 30' s/40's,he also took ryan rhodes from start to world title fight in fact he took the majority of the ingle gym from debut to either world title glory or world title challenger. Imo frank was a better promoter if you look at both promoters in their peak, eddie is still in his peak of promotion but lets see if he can pluck a gem and shine it up the best he canmaverick23 wrote:I think it just takes time to turn someone from their debut into a star. I think Hearn has done a great job with Joshua. It's easy to say anyone could make him a star but I think Hearn has promoted him near perfectly.
You would have thought someone like Carl Froch would have been a star long before he signed with Hearn. He'd fought on BBC, won his world title on ITV but still couldn't sell out the Nottingham Arena against Dirrell or make some serious money. He did all of that with Matchroom within 2-3 years. I think he's also done well for guys like Bellew/Brook who have also been promoted far better than they were previously.
Without Sky Sports there's no way Hearn would have been a success. However near enough all other promoters had an opportunity with Sky but didn't make the most of it. When I think back to some of the dross we had from all promoters (particularly some of Barry Hearn's cards) I'm not surprised Sky wanted to change things.thechump wrote:With the might of sky sports u mean, how do you think hearn would of done if sky pulled the plug on matchroom boxing aswell? Spot on. The Calzaghe point illustrates it. Brook took some stick for the opposition he faced post-Porter, and it wasn't great, but it's not like he's been thrown exclusively gimme fights since, (he's fought Golovkin for crying out loud), whilst Crolla, Bellew, Cleverly, McDonnell and Joshua have all been matched keenly.maverick23 wrote:FW was, by a long long way the top promoter in the late 90s, 2000s but I think promoting has moved on and he's been slow to react.
