True, but after 1982/1983, he would've found a way to duck Dokes, as he did Greg.Shame Larry didn't try to unify the belts, one of two things I hold against him.

Growing up Marty was one of my favorites to watch, at least in the few fights seen of him. I didn't see anyone mention that after Marty beat Ball, he said he was looking to get a fight with Cooney, and felt it would be a big draw. Alas, Cooney, really Victor Valle, Mike Jones and Dennis Rappaport did nothing to really advance Gerry's skills by having him fight guys like Marty (or Tillis, or Witherspoon, Thomas, etc.), even if Gerry would have lost one of those fights.
I thought Marty was robbed against LeDoux, though Scott's jab caused Marty a lot of trouble and piled up points. I was very excited to see Marty get a shot against Greg Page after the win over Ball, but on that day the fit and quick version of Page showed up. Marty just couldn't get his punches off, and was late trying to slip anything.
I have to admit I was really hoping Marty would flatten LeDoux when they met. Scott was getting blown out by Norton when he badly and I think blatantly thumbed Ken late, and lucked out a home town draw. Scott had been whipped by Mike Weaver, and earlier in his career was flattened by Foreman, and twice lost to Duane Bobick. When there was talk of Scott maybe getting a title fight against Holmes if he could win a rematch with Lyle, then Monroe as a substitute - in his home town again, it really chaffed my hide. He simply didn't deserve it. Scott wasn't a dirty fighter per se, but I always wondered in the back of my mind when Holmes couldn't finish him early, he thumbed him before Scott could thumb him, a la Norton. Though that punch from Holmes was so fast when both fighters were moving, it's impossible to fully accuse Larry of that.

BTW Scott Ledoux didn't "badly and blatenely" thumb Ken Norton in the eye in that fight.
The punch popped Norton's eardrum.
Ken Norton even admits that in his autobiography GOING THE DISTANCE.

So you 78% accuse him of it??? ... Holmes didn't need help to beat LeDoux.

Holmes was known to have broken his thumb in a number of fights as well as using it as a weapon.
There was an entire thread on this subject here years ago of course.

Scott LeDoux did not "Blatantly thumb" Norton in the eye.
( even tho that is what the ring side commentaers had said when it was shown live on CBS).
He broke his eardrum with a looping right hand.
and it was a competive fight clear up to then.
Ken Norton even admits that himself in the autobiography book GOING THE DISTANCE
