Pretty much, Joe decided to fight an old Roy Jones Jr. while Hopkins who he'd just fought took on the younger man in his prime.

He did... Pavlik had the big straight right and Calzaghe did catch bombs on occasion... But Pavlik was already gone to the winds when he faced Hopkins... He was an alcoholic and druggie by that time and never recovered his form... He actually should have been in the hospital rather than in the ring with Hopkins... He said he felt like each of his arms weighed 100 pounds..
He had a staph infection and was loaded with antibiotics... and he had a badly swollen bursa sac on his left elbow... He was a basketcase.
Hopkins' win over Tarver was his best.. As luck would have it, Tarver also says he fought the worst fight of his life.. He was very weak after making the weight.. He played a Heavyweight in Rocky VI and had to lose some 45 pounds.

Even if he WERE already abusing drugs and drink a fighter not at his best due to alcohol or drugs doesn't have an excuse for why he lost. He lost because he chose to lose, and deserved to lose.

That goes without saying... It still takes some of the luster off the win for Hopkins.. I don't think it's more of who he fought and when he fought them. With Hopkins career, I think he's going to be more known for his longevity and able to still compete at the top until he was 49 years old. Usually at that age, boxers are trying to earn their last pennies or being desperate. Boxers tend not to be championship fighters after 40 apart from select few, but Hopkins was still unifying the LHW division in his mid 40's.

Trinindad win is the biggest Hopkins' achievement, as it has made him an undisputed champion. I'd also name it the best KO win. And talking about the best opponent, Hopkins has faced a lot of big names, Trinindad is among them, of course, but Roy Jones was probably the best one. Obviously Hopkins has won a rematch with Jones, however we all know, that prime Jones has faded pretty far away then.

Were they going to fight a trilogy??? ... NO!!! ... Nothing was going to change -- so Hopkins won that rivalry.

However later it comes... If it's the next week or 25 years later... He who laughs last, laughs best.. Losing to anyone you beat earlier is not a good feeling.. He either progressed farther than you in a shorter time -- or deteriorated less than you.

Hopkins' best win might've been his second fight with Antwun Echols. Getting a dislocated shoulder mid-fight thanks to a foul from the 24-3-1 challenger, Hopkins refuses a DQ win and comes back to score a TKO.

Trinidad. Hopkins was a 4-1 underdog in that fight and he fought brilliantly. Watch that fight again with the sound off and you will see how good he was that night. Just brilliant.

lol, I'll never forget that fight, not for the fight itself but for what Hopkins said to the ref when told he would win by DQ if he couldn't continue.
I can't give an exact quote on memory but Hopkins basically said: "I can't lose my belt that way"

In the world Bernard Hopkins occupies winning by DQ does not equal a successful defense of said belt, winning by DQ means he will lose his belt.

The Trinidad fight was his best win, performance and KO. Tito was the smaller man yes, but he'd looked sensational vs. Joppy and was on a tear. He was the greatest fighter on earth not named Roy Jones at that point with many even ranking Tito as pound for pound #1.
His best overall opponent would be Jones probably followed by Joe Calzaghe or Trinidad.

If you take the time to read the articles you will see that Tito was in fact a heavy favorite over Hopkins.
