I agree. There is a line in the sand (although not always completely agreed upon amongst the boxing world), but there is a line still where stopping shouldn't be criticisedstujones wrote:I would agree with Eubank personally, however I think in situations where the fight has become unwinnable, for whatever reason, then it is acceptable to quit.
For example, DLH vs Pacquiao - it was clear as early as the 2nd round that it wasn't in the tank for DLH and he took a sustained beating. I think that was not a disgrace that he quit. Whereas I felt Ohara had buzzed Taylor on occassion and was still in the fight.

Re: Chris Eubank Sr says fighters should never quit a fight
To the people who criticised Kell Brook for taking a knee vs Spence and 'allowing' himself to be counted out, I'd be interested in their opinion on Mike Tysons last bout vs Kevin McBride. Does everyone agree that Tyson quit? On his stool? I'm not trying to be clever and I'm honestly not looking for an argument here, I respect anyones opinion.
And is it my imagination or has Ohara Davies not had anywhere near the same amount of stick for appearing to quit last weekend vs Kelly? Or is that due to the fight being much lower profile than the Brook/Spence bout? I didn't see Davies asked about it in any of the post-bout interviews but maybe I just missed it, Kelly said in one interview that he was "surprised that he (OD) quit like that".
Different sport but do we seem to be witnessing more injury withdrawals in tennis these days too or am I imagining that as well? I wonder if athletes today are simply not as tough as their predecessors? We know this to be the case in football I think I can safely say

...getting a sustained beating posing a threat fraught with serious physical and mental health hazards is a legit reason to quit, period...

Right so Nigel Benn wasn't top class. Terrificbanjo wrote:And risk ending up a vegetable who can't wipe their own arse? He spoke shite when he was fighting, still does now. Bare in mind this is a man who never stepped up against a top class fighter.

Benn was hardly Jones Jr or Toney though, was he? Eubank has since admitted that he ducked them as he knew he'd lose, which doesn't exactly embody the brave warrior spirit he's currently banging on about.Ruthless-RKO wrote:Fought him twice..Autobarn wrote:Right so Nigel Benn wasn't top class. You must operate in different boxing circles from me. Virtually everyone I've ever met in the game, thinks he's an absolute clown.TheLeprechaun wrote:If you know anything about Eubank Sr then you will know that he's the one person who you can't criticize for saying something like this. Anyone who doesn't respect him as a fighter/warrior isn't a true boxing fan.
The man showed tremendous heart and chin in his career, you'd do well to find a brit fighter with a better chin or better heart.
There is a difference between Eubank as a fighter and as a personality. As a fighter, he is british boxing royalty.
Re: Chris Eubank Sr says fighters should never quit a fight
Well, he's certainly royalty if that status is determined by only considering the views of people who think he's royalty
Re: Chris Eubank Sr says fighters should never quit a fight
Both openly ducked Toney and Jones Jr, didn't even fight McCallum.Ruthless-RKO wrote:Fought him twice..Autobarn wrote:Right so Nigel Benn wasn't top class. He was a right tough bast4rd
He avoided certain fighters
His heart and chin were tested (but would have been interesting to see if they held up against Toney and Jones)
As a personality he is a complete cockwomble but gets away with it because the man could really fight.
He talks complete and utter shite but due to how he earned his spurs, we are supposed to just give him a pass. Well for me, no. Just because someone is a high achieving sports person, I do not think that gives them any right to lecture people on how the world works. They do not suddenly have advanced intellect and been given the ability to unlock the secrets of the world and how it and existence truly resonates through the planet. In fact, that shite runs true with anyone famous. All the memes of stupid ass quotes by some guy who made a few films, hit a few tennis shots etc on social media fck me off.

he'll probably come up out with something next week that completely contradicts what he said this week. The man just talks for the sake of talking as long as somebody's listening.
Re: Chris Eubank Sr says fighters should never quit a fight
As usual, he's talking utter bollocks

Leprechaun
Those of us 40+ can remember spine-tingling moments watching the occasional epic brawl Eubank had. We can also remember seeing him milk his ITV contract, barely winning against part-timers.
He isn't boxing royalty - I'm not even sure of the definition, but whatever that may be, he isn't. He is an intellectual Pygmy.
Brook - for his many, many faults, had the balls (or Eddie Hearn financed stupidity), to enter the ring with GGG - Eubank did nothing comparable. Brook then fought a guy in a 50/50 fight who proved to be better, and when he was facially injured and gassed choose not to risk blindness or more hurt.
I can't see how anyone can impute he's a coward based on that, which is precisely what Eubank suggested.

The Nick Blackwell fight was literally only last year.

Re: Chris Eubank Sr says fighters should never quit a fight
I remember when Eubank used to say boxing was a mug's game etc, now he's advocating that fighters should continue even if there might be something seriously wrong with them?
Make up your mind Mr Eubank!
Also, him talking about Kell Brook is an insult.
Whatever Brook's faults are, he was man enough to go up two divisions to take on a man that was better than anyone Eubank ever fought.
Hearing him & Jr berating Brook, when they didn't have the balls to sign the contracts to fight Golovkin sticks in the gullet.
I don't doubt Eubank Sr's courage for one minute, but he needs to be more careful with what he says sometimes.

Holyfield was the one that amazed me.
Had a heart-attack early on in Moorer fight but still managed to go 12 rounds.

I was always indifferent to him before his boy started boxing but now his ramblings are annoying me. He's the epicentre of everything, he'll never be wrong and he'll never feel they get the credit they deserve regardless of decisions.Syntax Error wrote:I remember when Eubank used to say boxing was a mug's game etc, now he's advocating that fighters should continue even if there might be something seriously wrong with them?

Where was the warrior's code when James Toney came knocking?

It must be that same pen that Jr lost when it came time to sign the contract for the Golovkin fight, that Sr couldn't find when Toney wanted to get it on.Sklar wrote:Where was the warrior's code when James Toney came knocking?
