Ahh well said, I did know this fact from reading his autobiography but had forgotten!Kilsby wrote:Someone also mentioned Joe Calzaghe for Wales, which you would kind of agree with - and I hate to be picky, but he was actually born in Hammersmith in London![]()
To be fair, that's the same place I got it fromOssyrules wrote:Ahh well said, I did know this fact from reading his autobiography but had forgotten!Kilsby wrote:Someone also mentioned Joe Calzaghe for Wales, which you would kind of agree with - and I hate to be picky, but he was actually born in Hammersmith in London![]()
If I'm not mistaken, BoxRec is making upgrades to the site. It'd be great if they added a feature that allowed you to query things like this; Boxers by Place of Birth.Enlightened-One wrote:It would be far quicker for you to ask someone employed by BoxRec to write an SQL query on their fight list database, where they could stipulate filters that take into account things like number of world title fights, longevity of title reign, amount of four/five star bouts, win/loss record and also the highest rated points for world title bouts.USMCer wrote:Who are the Greatest of All-Time Boxers by place of birth?
From the resulting list of fighters (grouped per locale), the forum should then be in a position to very easily determine/vote the “GOAT’s by state, region, country.”
Otherwise, the info. being requested in this thread is far too taxing and time-consuming to acquire.

Wasnt it soviet union when wlad was born?
Exactly. Lets say a japenese couple is on a business trip in england and the pregnant women gives birth, what is the child than, an english boy. No, he is a japanese boy who was born in england.dagilechia wrote:and Vitali was born in Kyrgyzstan, do we have count him as a Kyrgyz?USMCer wrote:Jip wrote:Kazakhstan GGG

i think that place of birth is not a good factor, i dont think that Klitschko's consider themselves as Kazakh or Kyrgyz

Klitschko are 2 man from a country that doesnt exist anymore. Since they feel like ukraines they ukraines to me.
Place of birth is the most "determinable," if you will. There's no guess-work, no debate (for the most part). But believe me, I'm aware that some people move and are raised elsewhere from a young age... that's why I added that note (see the OP).dagilechia wrote:and Vitali was born in Kyrgyzstan, do we have count him as a Kyrgyz?USMCer wrote: Wladimir Klitschko was born in Kazakhstan

I believe so.Jip wrote:Wasnt it soviet union when wlad was born?USMCer wrote:Wladimir Klitschko was born in Kazakhstan
Place of birth is not debatable, it's black-n-white (for the most part). That's the reason to use that as the standard.Jip wrote:Exactly. that is what happened to Klitschko's - they were born on a USSR military bases. btw what about the likes of Marco Huck (Muamer Hukić) - fights as a German, born in Serbia (then Yugoslavia), and he is an ethnic Bosniak?USMCer wrote:Place of birth is not debatable, it's black-n-white (for the most part). Born in England means born in England.
BUT it's important to note exceptions like I've listed in the OPs.
Other more complicated exceptions may include "Military brats." Boxers born on a U.S.-base in Japan, for example. It's important to note that too.
Is it? Both Klitschko's, different bases?dagilechia wrote:that is what happened to Klitschko's - they were born on a USSR military bases. btw what about the likes of Marco Huck (Muamer Hukić) - fights as a German, born in Serbia (then Yugoslavia), and he is an ethnic Bosniak?USMCer wrote:...

if we put him in there as an Serbian (because he is probably the most accomplished fighter born in nowadays Serbia territority) he will be considered the best fighter of a country that he probably hates a lot, hates most than any other - because he is a Bosniak
yes - their father was a Soviet air force major general. because of their father Klitschko family also lived in Czechoslovakia for some years. btw Klitschko's have another brother - called Gennady. im not sure whether its true or not - i just once found it in Russian wikipedia i think. i know about one Gennady, born in Kazakhstan same as Wladimir, who knowsUSMCer wrote:Is it? I'll edit the OP then. This is the kind of collective effort that I was hoping for.dagilechia wrote:yes - their father was a Soviet air force major general. because of their father Klitschko family also lived in Czechoslovakia for some years. btw Klitschko's have another brother - called Gennady. im not sure whether its true or not - i just once found it in Russian wikipedia i think. i know about one Gennady, born in Kazakhstan same as Wladimir, who knowsUSMCer wrote: Is it? if you meant the third brother case i can not find nothing else now - i remember back then (like 5 years ago) i found a source that was in Russian too that said that they are hidding a ''third brother'' because he is quite a shame for they family, commited something bad, but it all may be just a bullshit tooUSMCer wrote:I'll edit the OP then. (any source/link, BTW? I'll look for it myself too)
I assume you being a native of Louisville you have visited the Ali center? I was impressed after going through it a few years back shortly after it opened. https://www.alicenter.org/ldlamb wrote:my hometown area and current town are Louisville, KY and Washington DC.
Louisvile is obvious (Ali)
DC, I don't know enough of the history.....But my guess is Ray Leonard.
By chance, do you know anyone at BoxRec, and could they do that for us?Enlightened-One wrote: ↑11 Aug 2017, 13:38It would be far quicker for you to ask someone employed by BoxRec to write an SQL query on their fight list database, where they could stipulate filters that take into account things like number of world title fights, longevity of title reign, amount of four/five star bouts, win/loss record and also the highest rated points for world title bouts.USMCer wrote:Who are the Greatest of All-Time Boxers by place of birth?
