The great Muhammad Ali can hit.
He stopped great fighters like George Foreman, Archie Moore and Sonny Liston.

What about Cleveland Williams, Jerry Quarry, and Bob Foster? Ali knocked them out.

Bob foster again a light heavyweight ,quarry not exactly hard to hit and Cleveland Williams was old and past it . .

Ali had speed and timing so he would get stoppage but this is a list of power punchers .

Matthew Hilton and Randall Bailey had a better punch than half the list for starters.

Freitas and Leonard jump out at me in this regard.
Duran once commented that Leonard hit harder than anyone he fought; he used the word 'hurt' when describing the punches.

But I also was surprised to see him on the list, even at 100 - I don't think of him as a banger.

Also early on there was also a vicious (perfect) left hook he took someone unimportant out with - that punch looked as good as any I had seen.
Randy Shields also said Leonard hit harder than Hearns.

Ali could hit. Ask any heavyweight that fought against him in the 60s and 70s.

That's one of the great myths....every time Ali knocked someone out...there was something going on to "explain it" he never really could do that.

The Greatest wasn't a devastating puncher like Big George or Iron Mike, but, he had underrated punching power. He was very underrated in the punching department.

Your debate makes me think of what they said about Douglas-Tyson; 'when any two hundred and twenty pound man hits you, it hurts.' - When comparing heavyweights you can argue Dempsey's power over Tunney sure, but I believe there is no such thing as a 200 plus pound HW who doesn't have one-punch KO power, including Ali.

Nobody thought Buster Douglas had any real 'power' and at the same time people where saying really stupid things like: Mike Tyson's neck is so strong he can't be KOed. (Remember that nonsense?) Then Douglas's uppercut snapped Tyson's neck back so hard you could feel the hurt right through your TV set. But Buster Douglas isn't going to be on anyone's list.

It is hard to compare the punching power of a HW with say a LW.

Marvin Johnson has to be in here.

Obviously hard list to make when you are comparing weight classes.
Most of the guys here deserve it; though I would reshuffle the order some. No two people are going to have this the same.

What jumps out at me:
How is Bowe below Holfyfield? I don't think that is even arguable.
Is this based purely on power?
If so, Joe Louis can't be ahead of Shavers, and Foreman. They hit harder than Louis. Louis was a more accurate puncher and well rounded puncher. However, he wasn't at their level based purely on power.
Dempsey is too high as well.
How does Jimmy Wilde rate#2? Who did he stop that makes him deserve to be that high?
Leonard stopped a heck a lot of good fighters. Watch his fights against Andy Price and Davey Boy Green. He could punch.
What about DLH? I know elmer hates him, but come on? Not in the top 100?

Don't see why Leotis Martin is on here.
I know I am going to get crucified for this, but why is Roy Jones this list?
There were many fights that he had against terrible opponents that he could hit at will yet they lasted several rounds against him.

There were several interesting names on here that people often overlook.

When these topics come up i cant help think of Bill Squires, a man who had nothing but a punch. he had about as much finesse as a charging rhino. The result was career of Knockouts and getting knocked out

Danny Lopez at #1. He really could knock you unconscious with one punch.

He was a devastating puncher. To me, it was Julian "The Hawk" Jackson, man. Boy, can he hit!

Good effort as per my middleweight 100 post. Lot of time and effort. There's a few I'd switch about though

Personally favourite Tommy Hearns would be few places higher

scartissue wrote:Former jr. welterweight champ Carlos 'Morocho' Hernandez of Venezuela needs to be on this list. One of the great bangers in the history of the game. Had a record of 60-12-4 with 44 KOs. Here are a few that he stopped.

Joe Brown
Teo Cruz (Cruz stopped only twice in 57 bouts. Once to Mando Ramos on cuts, the other to Hernandez)
Davey Moore (broke his jaw)
Kenny Lane
Bunny Grant (only stopped twice in 72 bouts. At the end of his career to Clyde Gray and to Hernandez in his prime)
Paolo Rosi (only stopped on cuts in his career until Hernandez stopped him in the 1st round)
Alfredo urbina

Also, in losing efforts, he dropped Jose Napoles, Nicolino Loche and Eddie Perkins. Three rock-jawed fighters. Hernandez belongs on this list.
Good shout, scartissue!
