Haye plays the game well. Boxing is more about hype jobs and selling PPVs than legitimate sport these days, at least at the top level. He sells fights well. I think some fans hate him, jut because they fell for his pre-fight claims a few too many times.

Let's break down some of Haye's big fights at heavyweight;

Haye vs Valuev. Haye boasted that he was going to knock his block off. He was a foot shorter and 100ibs lighter than Valuev. Of course he wasn't going to knock him out. He'd have to use his speed, box clever and just plain hit Valuev more than Valuev hit him, to win. Anybody with an ounce of common sense could've told you that. But people believed Haye's pre-fight claims that he was going to knock him from one side of Germany to the other. And then got disappointed when Haye won on points, when that was always going to be the sensible strategy for Haye.

What about Haye vs Audley? Anybody who thought going into that fight, that Audley was a World Class fighter, or that Haye vs Harrison was going to be anything other than a mismatch, obviously knows less about boxing than I know about dating supermodels. The press had been all over Audley for being rubbish for best part of a decade before that fight. When Audley was on the BBC, I lost track of how many people walked up to me and commented about how awful they thought "Ordinary Harrison" was. I was a fan of Audleys at the beginning, but by the time he fought Haye, even I'd realised he had 0 chance of winning. And yet the same press, and the same fans who'd criticised him, were expecting a classic heavyweight contest. To this day, I can't understand why. But these people believed Haye's hype, and were disappointed with the pathetic 'fight' that we got instead.

Even Haye vs Chisora, people were complaining that Haye and Chisora hugged post-match and said nice things about each other. The whole altercation between Haye and Chisora at the Klitschko fight was orchestrated in advance. Chisora didn't just happen to be there. It wasn't a spontaneous argument with Haye.

I'm not defending Haye as perfect, and I know he's pulled out of fights previously. But so did Calzaghe, and his amazing fragile hand. But we don't hear people moaning about Joe years after he retired. I think a lot of the bad feeling comes from the fact people have believed a lot of Haye's pre-fight talking. It's almost as if he's the only boxer to ever hype a fight up.

I agree largely with your post and well said but with regard to the above I thought Haye was there to engineer a fight with Vitali not Chisora and anyhow that was a proper scrap he and DelBoy had not your usual press conference handbags

Entertaining fight, yes. I just didn't buy their 'hatred' of each other.
