Re: Does McGregor Deserve Respect from Boxing Fans?

Do 47 other Mayweather opponents "deserve respect" from Boxing fans?

What a load of crap. FMJ had issues finding the range. He was cautious and respectful of McG's counters. There was no cat with a dead mouse scenario. FMJ let him tire and then took him apart. Giving up the first few rounds was part of that strategy.Kilsby wrote:Respect?

He had zero respect for his famed punching power.
As an MMA fan, I appreciate the sentiment.Ricky_ wrote:I've long bashed the UFC as being nothing but unskilled brawlers on here before, so I fully wanted and expected Floyd to make a clown out of McGregor - who i believed would have zero defence, awful footwork, an unbalanced stance, a chin hanging in the air, etc. I wanted to be proven right by seeing McGregor really embarrass himself and his sport.
But, that wasn't the case imo. A rusty Floyd, in the first 6 minutes, found himself in with a sharper boxer, someone who surprised him picking some counter uppercuts, that was accurately jabbing.
I begrudgingly admit that McGregor brought more to the table than most of us are probably willing to admit. In fact the only thing he had going for him - his power - was non-existant, probably due to having slower hands with the weight of the gloves/wraps, but the technical areas we all thought he would be weak in, he proved he learned enough - in 12 weeks - to hang-in there for 4 or 5 rounds with a master pugilist at the highest level the sport gets. I thought he was very impressive given the rather unusual circumstances.

Oh c'mon.... We all knew McGregor was going to go for Mayweather in the first couple of rounds.Tanzio wrote:What a load of crap. FMJ had issues finding the range. Even when FMJ had McG exhausted and nearly out on his feet he was missing a lot of his power shots right up to the finish. McG was awkward and difficult to get inside on.
Boxing enthusiasts belittling McG's performance are pretty hypocritical. How many of us thought before the fight that McG would land a counter uppercut nearly on the button v FMJ? How many believed that McG would win a round?
McG exceeded the expectations of most of boxing's hardcore, if we are being honest.
What are you talking about? I am talking about what actually happened in this fight. Whether or not anyone respects him is up to each individual.crusader wrote:Yes! Another 'he ain't getting enough respec!' rant from Tanzio
What was worse T, the lack of respect for McG after he beat Diaz, or the lack of respect here?

So did Mayweather.

His stamina was what surprised me most, it was awful!crusader wrote:If anything, his technique was worse than I expected, and the stamina was just as bad as I expected, despite seeing plenty of anecdotes about how much more exhausting grappling and MMA are. There was also no indication of series power.
Good timing though, which he's shown in MMA.

You think he tired because he didn't bother to train? Maybe something to do with having a muscular physique, draining to 154 & suffering an onslaught of bodyshots in the mid rounds?Kilsby wrote:His stamina was what surprised me most, it was awful!crusader wrote:If anything, his technique was worse than I expected, and the stamina was just as bad as I expected, despite seeing plenty of anecdotes about how much more exhausting grappling and MMA are. I thought a 29 year old athlete could last 36 mins no problem - obviously not!
There was an element of truth in malignaggi's comment that he got tired and malignaggi told him this is the last place you want to get tired when they was sparring their 12 rounds
But truth be told, McGregor didn't "go for" Mayweather, not like expected.Kilsby wrote:Oh c'mon.... Mayweather felt the power and wasn't concerned one bit - he winked at carl froch in round four and was smiling throughout the bout - he also walked him man down.... Something that he hasn't done for a dozen years (since Gatti)
He felt the power and realised he had nothing to worry about. McGregor pawed with his shots n looked like an amateur (which he was) it was all arm punches!
^^ he didn't realise he would be hit??Ricky_ wrote:You think he tired because he didn't bother to train? McGregor was measured. He jabbed. He moved his feet. He landed one-two's. (He rabbit-punched, which was B.S.). He probed. He countered. He landed upppercuts. But he didn't "go for" Mayweather, he never went full bore.
