True - I have heard bits and bobs (again I don't know if they are true or not), but there was some crafty matchmaking going on.

Also, has he ever had a "proper job" or was he effectively a full time amateur from day 1 with access to the best coaches and facilities etc. - not exactly a lad who went down his local gym 3 times a week alongside college and work etc.

I had heard he didn't fight as a junior and had a handful of bouts over a couple of seasons as a senior, winning the ulsters against weak opposition and having a w/o to the semi and losing first time out the following year before retiring.
However Deno has been around a bit, knows his stuff, especially in Ireland so I am happy to bow to his knowledge.
While having 30-40 bouts winning the Ulster seniors, the novices and an u21 title hardly makes him Olympic material it is still something to be proud of. A lot more than Joe Gallagher has done!
I suppose there aren't any name on his record otherwise Barry would have made the most of that, but fighting 30-40 times deserves respect.
And you don't need to have boxed to be a good trainer, there are plenty of examples such as Joe Gallagher. Enzo Calazaghe too, Dean Powell. I doubt Fast Eddie has fought either!

I'm sure there are others on here that have more knowledge on him than me but he did seem to appear out of the blue and details are very sketchy pre moving to Ireland so I can see why there is some scepticism towards his amateur days.

I remember watching one of his very early amateur fights, come forward very aggressive and looked very impressive for a novice.
Heard he was Barry son and against fellow novice opposition, but looked like he had potential.
I think Eric Guy may likely have film on him,

Michael Bustard was a decent fighter. Only lost by a point in the 2009 Ulster final to Niall McGinley [who beat McGuigan in the semis]. Eventually won the Ulster title in 2015. Fought in the Irish Elite Seniors too

Winning the under 10's is no joke. Some brilliant kids in it. The yorkshires are hard enough to win. AJ and Bellew won them! No mugs in those.
