I thought Joyce looked decent enough, won every round and got the stoppage against a solid domestic opponent.

He has a good jab and decent fitness level, which puts him ahead of a lot of modern heavies. Needs to make improvements, but there is a lot to work with.

I imagine they will be looking at Sexton for his next fight, Sexton will not last as long as Lewison but will probably be more competitive for as long as he lasts.

I'm not trying to be negative, what I saw, and I only caught a couple of rounds, he was slow and pushed the jab out. I also saw some good stuff, his movement was unexpected. I think they don't have to rush him to British, but for the sake of entertainment, him vs Sexton could be good. I'd prefer he had one or two fights beforehand, like Sokolowski & Cornish for instance, I know in a way he'd be going backwards but if it gives him a few rounds, it gives him a bit more experience.

Clearly he looks a bit stiff and lumbering but results prove he’s very effective!

Maybe he’s tough enough to walk through 95% of the division and just wear them down? All them amateur medals and wins aren’t down to luck. He must pack a punch too, despite not being a crisp puncher. He’s doing well for a man who didn’t take the sport up until in his 20’s. Very much an athlete turned boxer.
Something I liked about last night is he was clearly working on things in there and was enjoying himself. He could have upped it at times but chose not to.

Unless someone bangs him out, any potential conqueror will have to come through a hard nights work to get the win.

That’s what I think, but he has achieved a lot as an amateur.... I think his work rate and strength are the secret. Everything else looks awful

I thought he went alright. Seemed to get better as the fight went on. Looked like he was gonna spin off his feet with that left hook at times

exactly. hes one who is hard one the eye, but its effective. his strengths aren't flashy and they tend to show over time rather than right away.

froch was same way but obviously at a higher level. these types of guys will wear down and outlast a lot of boxers who look 'prettier' in the ring. joyce did it to guys like dychko (a very nimble boxer and mover for his size) in the amateurs and expect him to do it up to at least euro level as pro.

Froch is a decent comparison. Personally I think Joyce will go a long way. Whether he wins a world title or not I don't know, but I reckon he'll get to fighting for one. Put me down as a Joyce believer.

I'm still not sure what I think of this debut

it was certainly unusual

it shared a similarity with Tony yoka's last fight.

it appears neither of these two are very hard punchers but they are certainly fast.

Joyce seems to struggle with his footwork....fortunately a blob like Lewison isn't going to test that area of his game .

but all in all it was an ok fight if a little cringey to watch....should have been stopped a few rounds earliar.

where Joyce is in the queue now it arguable?

the winner of Webb and Gorman will be up there.

Its difficult not to make criticisms when the promoter is putting ridiculous hype on JJs shoulders.

Yes, for a 1st professional fight it was a satisfactory in fact good performance. I felt Joyce proved he has a good engine and domestically he will do ok ... anything more than would be ridiculous to forecast after just 1 fight and DH shouod know better to heap pressure on JJ so early.

On the negative side I thought JJ threw a lot of “arm” punches & question whether something wrong as he hardly threw a right hand & when he did it was ineffective.

I was a lot more impressed with potential rival Filip Hrgovic’s debut.

I have to admit I watched this fight, and felt disappointed afterwards. People can big up Ian Lewison as much as they like, but he was nothing more than a punch bag who threw the occasional wild punch.

Joyce on the other hand, was slow and sluggish and seriously lacked power. He may go on and win the British and possibly European, but at aged 32 I don't see him going any further.

good win for his debut but cant see him going too far, he lacks the upper body movement to effectively throw or get power into his hooks and uppercuts so will just be relying on his straight punches which isn't ideal

Looking at Joyce, I couldn’t believe how crude he was. I think he’ll get done by the first half decent fighter of the Whyte Chisora variety he faces

I dunno, he is very fit and awkardly effective.
The jab is good too which is by far the most important punch in the book.
Imo he would beat Sexton, Thomas or Allen well enough in his next fight and he compares well to Whyte if you compare their Lewison performances

have the ppl who were 'shocked' never seen him fight b4 that? always like that, and beat loads of guys with 'prettier' styles. think longer distance in pros suits him too.

:TU:

I have to ask, those who are disappointed and don’t think he’ll amount to much...how far do you think he will go?

He could end up British champ in his 2nd fight if it gets made!

I don’t think he’ll win a world title, but I think he’ll contest one and win all the belts below. To me, that’s a pretty fvcking good career!

agree. it's all about standards. ppl are treating it too much as a 'not a world champ = fail' thing, maybe because of the recent brit success at the top. but in reality, if he were to become british and euro champ that would still be far better than most accomplish, and something to be very proud of. imo hes already very capable of winning those titles.

im very confident that right now hed beat sexton for the british and the turkish guy who currently has the ebu (though chisora probably getting there first). hed walk through lenroy thomas for the commonwealth easy too.

I haven't seen a lot of Joyce, I'm not really a fan of amateur boxing and swerve the whole Team GB thing.

Given Haye claims that Joyce was the future of heavyweight boxing and because he is relatively decorated as an amateur, I honestly expected more from Joyce. He is obviously a massive, fit strong durable guy but his boxing looked limited. I would have expected a commanding jab and for him to have been a bit of a more slicker operator. He looked a bit crude and a bit of a plodder.

Sincerely though, I wish the lad the very best and he's definitely a better boxer than me which means if I ever met him on the street I would tell him that he's the best thing I've ever seen.

I'd like to see him face Hughie Fury after a couple more fights, because neither man's knocking the other one out in a hurry, and I think their styles could be good for each other.
