There is nobody out there that beats him if they start to trade with him. Having said that they are clearly trying to teach him new things but it looks so unnatural to him. It’s like trying to teach the wife how to kick a football, it’s just not going to happen. Tyson Fury is the only one out there that beats AJ. If he tries to box Fury he will get beat. He has to get Fury into a ‘fight’ but that’s easier said than done.
kind of agree. think he should be an intelligent aggressor more so than a boxer. he puts together his shots beatutfiully in combo and should throwing those coming forward.
I agree with this also, but on the flip side getting some rounds in won’t have done him any harm either.

When he explodes into action like Wlad round 5 for example, it will take an inspired bit of boxing to stay there with him
yes hes still learning for sure. easy to forget that hes only 4 years and 20 fights in. many are just prospects or becoming contenders at that stage. with his late start yet early success hes always been learning on the job

i do think hes most suited to intelligent agressor though. like ggg w/o as much face blocking. this is as long as he properly keeos track of his energy levels. hes a monster offensively and i think he sacrifices some of that for an overall loss of effectivess if he waits around too much.waiting also gives other guys more chance to get off first.

but even saying that, as a more patient boxer he still probably beats evrryone.only serious threat imo is wilder. windmill, sure, but loads of power, good speed, and even longer dimensions than aj.aj probably gets therevfirst but i would watch that fight without thinking an aj win was pretty much a lock.

and i think pretty much all boxng fans can see now that aj is no super human. he has flaws. he has been hurt, down, and in serious trouble. but he also has some serious strengths and has always been victorious at a level enough for him to be considered world #1. in the 'flawed' takam showing he still had much less trouble than 'top' hws like povetkin and parker did with the same opponent.

AJ still doesn't work the body enough, still has bad head/lateral movement, still got holes in stamina

50/50 with wilder, if wilder caught him he wouldlnt let him off the hook, Joshua also looks vulnerable after a flurry of shots

I wouldn't make Joshua favourite against Povetkin either

Anthony Joshua has done incredibly well & even if he did not fight again he can say he was the IBF & WBA World Heavyweight Champion ... he should rightly be proud.

I like the bloke.

But ... are we & the general public in danger of overhyping AJ as some unbeatable god when he clearly has flaws like any other boxer?

In addition ... is AJs focus being turned too much & is he being overworked with TV, media & sponsorship commitments as well as things like dinner speaking events ... Ajs commitment to the fans is superb, absolutely fantastic but is it too much?

He seems to deal with all incredibly well. Some boxers you can see them come up stuck. But he lives the life. Unlike your mate Haye who enjoyed a night out. Aj attends the occasional celeb bash but then goes to bed early and gets back in the gym the next day. Thats the difference to a longer legacy/career. Perhaps Ive bought all the hype, only time will tell but I think he will be the real deal and could go down as an all time great.....

You'll be waiting a long time. Who exactly is he going to 'come apart' against after having dispatched of the best heavyweight of the last 10 years, and having no credible challenges on the horizon, barring a freak result? Some folk need to be reminded we're not talking about a novice any more.

I understand the point but there is just something which is a gut feeling I have. Cannot quite explain it although I could try, but it is mainly a "feeling" which after watching the sport 35 years, I feel you gain a bit of a feeling for these things at time

Let's have a look for a minute and see how many other top heavyweights over the years had better records after 20 fights, I can tell you right now that Mike Tyson didn't fight anyone of note in his first 20, Lewis? Nope. Klitschko bros? Nope.

I get that people don’t like the hype or his promoter. I also understand that some people support boxers like football teams, so you have a few Fury fans going a touch ott when it comes to his flaws.

I’m still not sure why some seem so desperate to see him beat though!

He’s game, he admits he’s far from perfect, he likes to fight and he has already proved a lot of people wrong. I guess he’s not proved them ‘wrong enough’ yet.
I remember reading back through the rbr with Wlad on the British scene and it makes for quite amusing reading. People saying he’s gassed, stiff, beaten and fvcked after 7 rounds yet not giving a single prop to the fact he actually came back to win!

He’s far from unbeatable but right now he’s a warm favourite against everyone in the heavyweight division. Wilder has a chance, I’d put it at around 30% chance. His problem is he is too wild and telegraphs everything. I think he could be made to order for Joshua.
I think Joshua beats Parker with ease after his sowing against Hughie.
Oiky touches on Povetkin being a hard nights work and I agree here. If he survives the early onslaughts and drags Joshua deep, he can beat him. Joshua still favourite though

Fury? Is there even any point discussing him yet? Lose 8 stone, get your head straight and have a couple of tune ups and he could still not be half the fighter he once was and even that version was 50/50 with Joshua imo. I’m a Fury fan but he is being viewed with rose tinted specs by a few of late. Apparently his win over Wlad was a boxing masterclass where he toyed with him...not quite sure I remember it quite like that!
I will say I’d actually want Fury to win if they fought. I prefer him as a bloke, if not a fighter, and it would ruffle a lot of feathers!

Have the same feeling mate, Joshua is flawed but no one has been able to take advantage yet, if Joshua gets right in your face and lets his hands go theres not many that could compete, but give him some distance, angles and a solid jab and he will start to fall apart IMO, all this stuff about what he has achieved with so little fights is just a reflection of the really weak era Joshua resides in, saying that, he is mentally on point so at the least he will always be in exiting fights

Re Fury Wlad there was a thread on here with the final punch stats on and I think every comment was negative. 'Tells its own story' - 'pathetic' - 'you'd expect that in a four rounder.'

Now people go on like it was some masterclass. Wlad basically tried his usual tactic of stinking the place out and smothering a fight and Fury managed to get the nod by landing about seven punches a round.

The funniest thing is when people bring up the pacing/stamina thing.

We haven't had a top level heavyweight who can sustain a pace since Ike friggin Ibeabuchi, and he was nowhere near as physically big as Joshua.

Would a prime Wlad have thrown as many shots as Joshua did vs Takam? Would he fig. He'd have been terrified of gassing out. Wlad would have thrown 19 jabs and 6 right hands a round. With 2000% more holding.

His bulk clearly isn't ideal, but Joshua comes through an 11-round war with Wlad and wins all 10 rounds against a rugged toughnut in Takam and some people are still 'concerned about his stamina' and 'waiting for him to unravel'

Stop being terrified to celebrate success, stop yearning for a plucky loser again, and be comfortable that Joshua is going to rule the HW roost until he retires. Nobody on the horizon is going to beat him.

I think it's perfectly fair to suggest he won every round.

But even then, quibbling about a solitary round rather misses the point. His 'gassing' simply didn't materialise in any obvious way.

actually you can quibble over something and still get the point.i already mentioned the quotation marks flawed showing vs takam and that he dominated, so you dont need to rush to ajs defense dirk/eddie . take in the whole picture better. oh and lol at you quibbling with my quibble. you take your aj dedication that seriously

i love aj but wow ur at another level. ya, sure, fair to suggest that you couldve given aj each round but thought takam won the 9th myself and i know 2 judges gave him a round.but quibble over

What on earth is your point here? I really can't tell. Joshua wins every round against a decent, tough heavyweight who is capable of giving everyone a good fight, imagine if he was in with a great, tough heavyweight of the same dimensions... yes, Holyfield would have obviously been a significantly bigger challenge, because he's better than Takam. And?

This 'logic' doesn't make any sense. Lewis was given a torrid fight by Zelico Mavrovic, imagine what would happen against Holyfield! Oh. Tubbs makes it close against Bowe, how will Bowe deal with Holy on that evidence? Oh. Take Holy himself, what's his excuse for having a nightmare against Bert Cooper? How's he going to deal with Tyson? Oh.

I don't think Takam quite matches up to those opponents, but the point stands that tough heavyweight encounters happen, and Takam wasn't even a real problem for Joshua. What more did people want from him?

Look I'm and AJ fan, he's probably the #1, I just think he's got a lot of work to do, to live up to the Hype that is being peddled by his backers.

I think Usyk could come up and beat them all.

Hope he moves up in 2018 once he wins WBSS.

AJ is a huge brand. A defeat won’t ruin that. I’d say if he came back to avenge a defeat his profile would reach bigger heights.

Don’t forget Matchroom gave loads of AJ content to BBC, so expect AJ to be a shoe in for SPOTY. That would have a huge impact on his profile.

He will be the biggest sport star in the country in 2018.

What did he do so badly against Takam?

You do understand that degree of hype in boxing doesn't necessarily have to be directly proportionate to ATG abilities, right? Why do you feel aggrieved that Joshua is being marketed properly?

You're a classic example of someone who seems to be so disturbed by casual fans enjoying themselves (God forbid AJ has got armchair sports fans interested in boxing!) that automatically Joshua must be ready to be derailed.

It's absolutely bizarre.

People need to ignore the hype and assess fighters on their merits.

Joshua done very well in his fight against Klitschko but shown a lot of vulnerabilities the grit he showed us to come through that fight was very respectable, I am aware he has merits but for me he is still rather average aside from his combination punching and power, his movement isn't very good and he comes in too heavy and men like wilder, Povetkin and Usyk can easily KO him

I don't mind casuals enjoying themselves it's good publicity for boxing & keeps it in the headlines

But theres some serious sh*t talk surrounding AJ and some people seem to think he is really much better than he is & that he will change dramatically , I think what we see is what we are pretty much going to get from AJ with perhaps a few improvements here and there but nothing too much to write home about

I mean laughing at someone saying Usyk would beat AJ if he moved up to HW is ridiculous, Usyk is a great boxer, much more technically and fundamentally sound than Joshua, if you know boxing you know that that isn't laughable

Casuals don't bother me it's things like that from people who "know" boxing that are comical 😂 What do they see in AJ 🤔
