Though AAA v Gomez was an upset, there were some of us (like me) who had seen that AAA was susceptible to eating the left hook which was Gomez's best shot...in fact I picked Gomez to do him IF he came in fit.
It was certainly not as big an upset as Degale getting done by the lowest ranking fighter they could find and get away with,

Some of the examples here are literally nowhere near the level of upset DeGale suffered on Saturday. Some were actually strongly favoured by anyone with half a brain.

I remember being devastated at that....still, JLL was a very good fighter so I was probably guilty of being young and ignorant when shocked!

Loughran was about to "move on to bigger things" than defending a plastic belt on ITV & some bright spark brought over an unknown Mexican named Jose Luis Lopez. 90 seconds & three knockdowns later...
As to the topic: I think McCall doing Lewis (though I remember Boxing Monthly going "This could all go wrong..." beforehand) & Stevie Little beating Michael Nunn—although Nunn was on the slide (& obviously not at his pre-Tony world-straddling peak)—were both more surprising to me.
As Boxerbeetle says above, Chunky's looked like an accident waiting to happen for too long.

DeGale used to phone a few performances in during his am days so it’s not a massive shock that he had an off night as a pro.
Like many have said though, it did look like more than just an off night. He could well be finished unfortunately.

I remember winning on stupidly wide odds when Medina beat Scott Harrison.
He looked like a plodder to me,, but the hype at the time was sprinting in the opposite direction. I think the fight poster featured Harrison, Barrera, Marquez and Morales as if that picture was inevitable.
Not the greatest upset in UK history, but it was a lot bigger than its remembered now.

I remember the Fight poster. Saw it in a magazine I think. Yeah that was a pretty big upset at the time. Noel Quarless beating Anders Eklund and then John L Gardner before losing to Conroy Nelson and Mark Lee , Gardner getting KO'd by Ibar Arrington in the 1st had Harry Carpenter spluttering on Sportsnight

I remember him banging out his Mrs' ex in a pub loo and everyone getting round to get him off with false statements. I went to the Harrison v McCullough weigh in...one of the Jocks threatened to glass the barman in a very nice hotel. He didn't surround himself with good sorts, though the proof of that became more obvious than i would have guessed.

Marshall was indeed a quality fighter and a man to be avoided but he looked over the hill at 33, while Mills, who promoter Jack Solomons was building to a shot at the world light-heavyweight title, was very much on the climb. "Fearless" Freddie took a pounding but did make it to that world title.
