im not sure if that was even among taguchis toughest fights. hes had tougher times with guys worse than melindo.

Hard & tough but kinda ugly with very little "rhythm", IMO; Melindo just couldn't deal with Taguchi's wheels & the Japanese fella tended to finish off combos with lowering his head up-close—looked more like that was done to avoid overhand rights from the much-shorter Filipino than deliberately trying to foul.

Lots of blood, lots of head-clashes. Fairly entertaining but not true top level IMO, or enough clean exchanges to make it a "good" fight. If you saw Melindo's fight with Bukkler, you might know what to expect—an honest grinder where the two styles never quite meshed.

Just watched it fairly decent fight Taguchi had to dig deep to win that.

Never seen Taguchi fight before, his inside game is good for a guy tall at the weight. You'd think he can't have too many fights at Light Flyweight.

Lanky Japanese speedster Ryoichi Taguchi (27-2-2 12 KOs), 107.75, unified the WBA and IBF 108-pound belts when he displayed a late surge to pound out a unanimous decision over Filipino Milan Melindo (37-3, 13 KOs), 107.5, twelve hard-fought gory rounds on Sunday in Tokyo, Japan.

PThe official tallies were as follows—Gustavo Jarquin (Nicaragua) 116-112, Francis Jackson (US) and Ignacio Robles (Panama) both 117-111, all in favor of Taguchi.

The referee was Mark Nelson (US) who handled the fast-paced unification bout very well.

The WBA ruler Taguchi had a tough time coping with the shorter but sharper IBF titlist in earlier rounds, but the Japanese almost swept the second half by utilizing his advantageous height and reach.

They often made head collisions to see Melindo bleeding from gashes over both eyebrows and Taguchi from a cut on the forehead. In later rounds, Melindo was visibly fading and slowing down only to have Taguchi take the initiative to pile up important points down the stretch.

was it trendy?there really werent that many recognizing him tbh for what wouldve clearly been a foty mention year had he won. wouldvd been arguanly 3 top ten fighters hed beaten (anyone else do that?) and become a unified champ.easily a strong foty contender in that case.

but it was always conditional on him winning and he clearly was never going to deserve it unless he did that, so no award for him.

He did have a more worthy year than Crawford who some were picking. Sor Rungvisai takes FotY easy, though. Golovkin with an official decision over Canelo would've been another clear choice, though.

He's inconsistent. When he's good he's really good...but then he puts in a poor performance soon afterwards
