Compare this to Bernstein/Ranallo/Malignaggi who called this fight for Showtime (video now available on Youtube) and it just shows you how poor Smith is. Granted, commentating is not an easy job, but Smith is appalling given how long he's been doing it.
One thing I can't be doing with, with american commentary, is references to the "real estate" eg controlling the ring etc. For xxxxs sake there is no need to keep repeating the same analogy over and over again. I think Teddy Atlas started the phrase. Mute button is pressed when I start hearing this pretentious nonsense

That was the way to score those rounds
You’ve missed the context. By him saying “I’m afraid” indicates a bias towards Wilder. Not very professional as Roy mentioned earlier in the thread.
But in the context he was talking about Wilder and his chances of winning. It was clearly a case of him suggesting 'it's unfortunate for Wilder that he's four down.'
Hard to say he was biased when even after the result he said he had Ortiz four up.
I’m sorry but that’s not the way I picked it up and I don’t think that’s the way Nelson meant it either. He had to have him 4 rounds up as there was no other way to score it. The whole commentary was extremely pro-Wilder last night. It was cringeworthy to listen to at times.

Absolutely godawful from Smith & his sidekick, as ever. And the suited and booted ex pro cheerleaders who cover the uk side are the pits as well.
When will we ever be rid of the truly awful Adam Smith I just don’t know, he’s a complete moron of the highest order.

Honestly I’m not a huge fan of Smith but if your watching for the fights then why let his commentary bother you.... to say it ruined the fight is pathetic... but I understand that we all have to let off some steam

Disagree, Smith genuinely ruins fights for me. Recorded last night, got up early doors and sat down to watch it with a coffee before work. Ten minutes in and I just deleted it and caught the Yank feed on YouTube when I got home.
I’m genuinely laid back, can’t think of a fighter I’ve ever really wanted to see take a pasting or anything like that, 99% of the time I don’t even care who wins, much prefer just sitting back an enjoying it for what it is.
Smith is genuinely unwatchable though, truly appalling. He’s like your mate who after a couple of bevvies just starts rambling pish non-stop. He couldn’t break down a fornicating Cornetto far-in-less a fight.

I prefer Smith to anything the Yanks cough up, those pudenda just love the sound of their own voices, plus Anna Woolhouse is cool chick.

Maybe it is harsh to say this was the worst commentary ever heard......
I am confident that Smith has done equally as badly many times over and if not worse!
He consistently pushes the boundaries of being terrible!

Sky need a radical overhaul in relation to their coverage of boxing.
Adam Smith needs to listen to Don Dunphy, Harry Carpenter. Listen and learn.
He seems to arrogant to do that though in my opinion.
Afterall, boxing only started when Barrera fought Morales !!!

Smith has been doing this for 25 years, he isn't going to get any better

That's how I look at it when I'm watching boxing or sports in general.
I'm busy focusing on the action. The commentary is simply peripheral noise that I pay scant attention to.
Maybe that's why I was one of the few who had no problem with Cosell. I really wasn't listening.

I think it gets harder and harder to ignore when the commentators are screaming and growling, desperate to convince us that every punch is making history.

Maybe that's why its better to watch fights in a crowded bar (or pub for you).
There's so much noise, you can't hear a thing that the commentators are saying.
The only time I get pissed is when the customers can't shut up when it's time for the judges' decision to be announced.
Like anything they have to say is more important than the decision.
