I train young lads at an amateur gym and they all think they are going to become millionaires out of boxing. Worryingly their parents do as well !

I make a point of telling them how tough it is and only a few who are very talented make it.

I tell them to enjoy training and getting fit cos it makes you feel great but don't think boxing is a golden ticket.

Boxing is a tough old sport and a very hard way to make a living, fairplay for the decision and all the best to him in the future :TU:

Same with most sports, it's a very difficult thing to do even when winning.

Great decision by Ben. He's got a wife to consider.

I'm sure it's all already been said, but boxing is a brutal sport and the VAST majority who take it up at any level get damage without money or glory. The majority of professional boxers are unheard of, even on a site like this. But just because you're not famous doesn't make the punches any less damaging. Whenever I see some like Scott or Mago I wish I could quit enjoying the sport, but like Stuarty said you don't pick boxing it picks you. I've had my fair share of concussions and injuries including one of my last fights when I was left vomiting and concussed on a sidewalk in front of a hotel room because appropriate medical staff had not been available. You'd think that would be enough to put me off, but it wasn't. Massive respect to Ben for deciding to walk away--he's doing something many others are not brave enough to do.
