he got up and took over and made golota quit. and guys get in top 10s today for climbing off the floor to beat izu ebono or artur szpilka ffs, so not much knock on the golota fight imo. id deffo take prime grant to ko a guy like eric molina and even a well faded grant gave adamek issues

lewis was an atg top 10. he did the same thing to razor ruddock

I get it, I do! The division is weak today after top 4 or 5...I'd have to go back and watch some of his fights. He wasn't terrible.

I have a bit of a soft spot for Ron Stander: Facing a peak Joe Frazier with nothing to offer but guts. It was bloodier and more one-sided than a bullfight, but the man from Council Bluffs, Iowa did not want for courage.

I have a serious soft spot for all the lower echelon title challengers from that era like Stander, Terry Daniels, Jose Roman, Chuck Wepner etc.. In fact, I used to fantasize about what a bloody, tough, grueling, dirty battle it would have been had Stander & Wepner fought. It would have been entertaining in an ugly, violent way. Lol.

Which sums up how its gone way to far.. I remember seeing posts from 2011 calling for Danny Williams to quit! I guess they need the money and feel they have no other option.

Some say Holyfield fought to long but his defeats were mostly to credible opponents even later on in his career. When you are losing to opponents with more loses than wins, you are a walking punchbag.

Holyfield actually fought pretty well in his mid 40. He beat some veterans who were younger than he was (Savarese, Botha, Nielsen), arguably beat prime Valuev. And even against Ibragimov, who beat him clearle, Holyfield showed more than much younger guys like Whitaker or Briggs.

I don't see this fight listed anywhere. When is it? Or did it already get cancelled?

I did like Michael Grant early in his career. I thought if he was paired with a really good trainer ( like Teddy atlas ) he could have been a solid contender. He needed someone to teach him to box smart, wait for his moment, then finish his opponent off. He needed someone to light a fire under him, when things got tough inside the ring.

To call this the greatest fight ever is patently ridiculous.

Me too as evidenced by my user name: "Candyslim" or "Triphammer" was the nickname of Jeff Merritt, who broke the jaw of his stable-mate Earnie Shavers and was regarded as one of the hardest punchers in boxing history. I forget who it was (Gil Clancy?) but someone was asked "Is Earnie Shavers the hardest puncher in boxing?" and replied "Earnie Shavers isn't even the hardest puncher in his own gym."

I'm too lazy to look it up but I believe I'm right in saying that Merritt was the only man (or maybe just the first) to actually knock out "The Butcher Boy" Ron Stander. Of course Ron was way past his best (by which I mean, most durable) by that stage.

Sadly Jeff didn't have much of a chin which is often the way with the biggest punchers.

Another of those seventies heavies that really captured my imagination (never saw him fight even on film) was Al "Goulds"Jones, not to be confused with the vastly inferior "Memphis" Al Jones. At 6' 6" he was huge for those days but his career was plagued by injury. Long before the internet and box-rec I used to seek out any information I could get about him. Happy days.
