Hold on a Mo, I just now read that Sibson said it was
"The protective gear around the waist that split in the second round".
and his trunks almost came off when he was getting off the canvas in the sixth round after the knockdown.

That's why you have a backup cup (which IS the protective gear that goes around the waist as well)....

And you have a backup mouthpiece.... backup trunks... backup gloves in case they don't have a pair for you I guess.... and backup shoes... Why you need back up shoes God knows... The sole or heel might come off??? If they're well made, expensive shoes that won't happen in a million years, but they're there... back up wraps in case you screw up the first wrapping... More water than you'll ever need... More swabs, Vaseline, and coagulant than you'll use in a lifetime.

Your cut man has 3 cut kits....in case you get 3 cuts... You've never been cut in your life, but anything can happen.

I remember reading somewhere thats someone stole Ken Norton's shoes in the dressing room just before his fight with George Foreman
in Caracus Venuezeula. The shoes the finally got in a jiff didn't fit Ken Norton too well either from what I remember.
(how many people in Venuzeula would have had his shoe size ?)

Maybe that's why they insist you have a back up pair... Somebody could steal 'em...

You better not pack them together either... Norton's footwork wasn't fantastic for that fight.

Has anyone here read this book that was published in 2013 ?
SIBBO:The Tony Sibson Story by Jim Kirkwood.
( how much was a copy when it came out in March 2013 anyway ? dang talk about inflation)

Davidson would've had Tony if his head was on straight.

I remember being more of a fact. Norton said he wasn't "comfortable" with the new shoes, but shoes don't hold you up when you are pounded to dust. Interesting though.

Kalan wrote: 19 Apr 2018, 20:02 Sibson bounced around like crazy... And too many feints... I would settle him down, stop the bouncing, get him to step smoother, and be more selective with his punches... You look like you're bouncing when you not if you step in an out quickly and precisely, but you look smooth.. When you bounce you look like a jumping bean.. Mayweather, Lomachenko, and Mikey step well, never giving any opponent any rhythm to work off of.. You can't time them.. Sanchez was another.

Hagler punched the Hell out of Sibson because Sibson was throwing when he didn't have a target... He often missed badly, leaving himself open.. You can't slip every punch and you shouldn't try... You have to block or parry some and slip, duck, or roll some... You learn which ones doing the mitts... He needed a lot more sparring... But 8 to 12 rounds of sparring does you no good if you're not getting good direction from your corner. You'll make the same mistakes over and over til they're so deeply ingrained you can't unlearn them.

Then he needed better range on his jab and straight right.. It's a matter of throwing a smooth effortless punch and making contact, not throwing hard.. Like in basketball you only take high percentage shots.. You don't gun away and hit 20% of your field-goals. If you're landing 50% you're doing well.. You need to outscore the guys you can't KO.

Then he needed better balance. Do handstands, one legged sprints forwards and backwards, use ladder stepping routines, but you need fantastic balance so it's an everyday item.

Defense is the thing he needed to work on overtime, and everyday.. You can box for 20 or 30 years if you can defend well.. You'll be done quickly if you're getting nailed.. The basic description of Boxing is the art of self defense.. It doesn't matter if you score KO's.. Nobody paid to see May-Pac because they knocked anybody out lately.
That was a good read - you sound like a decent coach :salut:

When I was reading it, I kept hearing Ritchie Woodhall's voice, saying "easier said than done of course"

Every fighter has an arch to his career and I wonder if Tony Sibson wasn't the very unlucky fellow who caught up to Hagler when he was at the top of his arch.

Didn't know 'jack' about Sibson but fell in love with him when he exposed the 'chuck davey' of the 1980s, John Collins. Not that Collins was a bad fellow, or even a bad fighter, he was neither, I was just so annoyed with the way ESPN was shoving him down our throats.

Marvin Hagler rated Sibbo and Mugabi as the two strongest fighters he fought

STRONGEST
Mugabi and Tony Sibson: I remember seeing Tony Sibson at the weigh-in. This guy was strong. I remember when he hit me on the chest, he looked much stronger and bigger than me, and he’s supposed to be a middleweight. Mugabi, I believe he put on more weight before the fight. I could feel his body against me. He felt like a light heavyweight, he didn’t feel like a middleweight. When he threw punches, they were all deadly, very hard punches. This guy felt like a light heavyweight to me, so I had to wear him down, to take away some of that strength.

I had the pleasure of writing the Sibson biography mentioned earlier.
Tony is so shy that he couldn't believe anyone would want to write a book about him and was terrified nobody would buy it. Once I persuaded him to go ahead with the project the insights to his career were amazing.
Of particular interest to readers I suppose would be the build up to his first British title defence against Kevin Finnegan and his fight with Collins.
Sibson was a 'confidence' fighter. If his confidence was high I'd have put him in with ANY middleweight in history. But if he had doubts, or he thought anyone around him had doubts ( see day of weigh in for Andries fight) he became very beatable.
But what a puncher !
Any by the way he needn't have worried about the book not selling - I'm still selling copies today.

Watched Sibbo many times and he was the best middleweight in Europe for many years but he never really cracked it at world level, destroying a used-up Alan Minter and outworking the reluctant Dwight Davison to earn his shot at Hagler (who outclassed him), then destroying the overrated John Collins prior to losing to the fairly ordinary Don Lee.
He never stood any chance with Dennis Andries a weight up.
