Apparently Golovkin isn't on his aging last leg as so many here have repeatedly opined since the Brook fight.

It was just a matter of downgrading his opposition to a weaker smaller, less talented fighter instead stepping up and struggling against the Brooks, Jacobs and Canelos of the world.

Put Golovkin in with a junior middleweight who hasn't fought in 2 years and has never been successful at the world class level and suddenly he looks like a million bucks again.

Big surprise.

No, his 20 defenses are no better than Golokin's. Keith Holmes you mentioned lost to freaking Roman Karmazin.

The 20 defences?
clearly hopkins has a stronger 20, and of course he has several wins outside of that which top anything ggg has done
You're over exaggerating, and you've obviously not researched it well enough. To say Hopkins' MW resume pisses all over GGGs is rather funny.

He's pulling stuff out of his behind. Golovkin's MW resume is currently not stronger than Hopkins, but they are comparable. It's not head-and-shoulders better, but Hopkins' is better currently.

Neither are great resumes, only in number. Hopkins is truly special for his second career added on to the MW run.

Just look at Bernard's resume and say what exactly is better. And don't mention DLH who has never achieved anything above 147 and a fight before Hopkins needed a robbery to get a win against Felix Sturm! Trinidad is the only good win among the 20 defenses, and Tito fought at 147 two years earlier.

Exactly this. I don't think Golovkin will ever surpass Hopkins' win over Tito, but he can easily compensate for that with depth. Defeating Saunders, Canelo (again), and another contender would go a long way.

Yes, the second part is what made Hopkins great. MW division sucked at the time.

Canelo is Golovkin's best win on his resume just like Tito is probably Hopkins. Hopkins put a stamp on the Tito win, Golovkin failed to do the same. Then you have the Jacobs fight where Golovkin failed to show his dominance against the best career MW he's fought.

So, you are comparing Tito who jumped two weight classes in 2 years with huge roided Canelo who refused to engage?

You're looking at hindsight, and if you want to go with a microscope over the Tito win, you'd have to do the same with Canelo. Canelo never fought at the full MW limit until the Golovkin fight, and all his previous fights were against 154 lbers. I'm not counting that joke fight against JCC Jr. either.

They are comparable. Tito is a better fighter than Canelo, period.

Yeah, Saunders is underrated. GGG's best move would be to just stay at 160 and extend the defense streak since good competition awaits. But I'm not convinced Canelo won't get the full robbery in September and walk away with the belts. People thinking Vegas won't do the same thing twice is what keeps the machine going. Either way, the streak won't last much longer, especially when the end of the run meets with some of the better competition you've faced. Not even Hopkins was immune to this.

Why the hell does everybody keep mentioning Wladimir today as if he's relevant? Did he announce a comeback or something and I missed it? :maybe:

The fellow seems irate. But that's interesting. Actually I've read almost none of the new posts here. The idea just occurred to me independently. Did it also occur to others? Or was it on different subjects that you saw his name?

The 20 defences?

Hopkins has 19 title defenses, his No Contest result vs. Robert Allen when he fell out of the ring and did not want to continue does not count as a title defense.

Gennady passed Hopkins tonight.
