If you compare boxing and ufc as sports ufc is leap years ahead. We can't make big fights in boxing because that age old excuse of the money in ufc how many big time fights don't get made? Mayweather v Pac was about 10 years to late. How many fights do fans get ripped off by ? Haye v bellew twice was a rip off. Facts are facts and they have control over there sports. Over in boxing we are all worried we can't get fury v Joshua because they have different promotors. Its laughable. I love both sports but it's not even close.

The UFC is a promotional outfit though which happens to have the biggest names in MMA under its umbrella, there are plenty of other organisations in MMA. UFC fighters only fight other UFC fighters.

Mayweather Pacquiao happening late was better than Lesnar Fedor never happening at all.

There is method to Conor McGregor madness. Always has and always will. He will fight kabib and make a shed load of cash. Its mad but absence makes the heart grow fonder. Look at fury was hated before he went away and now he's loved. Ufc is a promotional outfit but what 3 letters are more known to the world ufc or mma? It's sad but the dinosaurs ruin boxing and now we have all the white colar boxers turning pro without a single amateur fight. We have guys who sell a shed load of tickets being used on slots on big shows where genuine talent floats under the radar. Its all geographical. Unless your from England or a big city in Scotland what chance do you have? Even at that it's not enough. Obviously I expect some of it but surely people agree regarding corruption etc. Guys on here have been boxing followers for many of year and that image they have I can only admire but inside of boxing is disgusting. Managers and promotors would sell you down the river for a couple of grand

Ok, but that's not really any different to Mayweather and Pacquaio saying they will fight each other and make a lot of cash. Which they did. Why do you think McGregor chucked in MMA for a few years to have a crack at Mayweather? Because he knew how much he was worth and knew the UFC weren't paying him fairly. I'd be very worried when that starts to happen if I was an MMA fan.

Also, 'Fury was hated now he's loved.' Based on what?

Conor is building a fight while both are still relevant .

Where did I mention money ? Boxing money is better but it's full of mismatches. Jesus we have matchmaker managing fighters. Total conflict of interest. Jason McClory for fw is a manager of fighters. I'm sure Andy ayling is also.

What i am saying is ufc have a face of the sport which is dana white and the rest I'm the background making fights. That's the way it should be. I can agree they prob don't get paid enough but again that's there structure.

Tyson fury hated and loved analogy goes on tickets sales. His rematch with wk they couldn't sell. A fight against a tba seems to be selling with a garage under card. Could be wrong right enough.

The point is that if you're saying that MMA promotion is miles ahead of boxing because all the big fights get made, you have to then have an answer for the questions about fights that fans clearly wanted, but which still didn't get made. Lesnar v Fedor. Silva v GSP. Fedor v Couture. Henderson v Jones. Also, wouldn't MMA fans rather have the biggest name in the sport actually having MMA fights rather than spending years pissing about pretending he's a boxer? I mean, people might sit up and take an interest but I don't think it would necessarily be great for football if Ronaldo and Messi decided to chuck the game in for a couple of seasons so they could become F1 drivers for example, or if Federer and Nadal decided to skip eight grand slams to play golf.

Who?
Let’s be honest here with the exception of Anthony Joshua and maybe Amir Khan every British boxer could walk down the street and not get noticed.. We are a biased crowd in these forums and very much in the minority.. Boxing is a small sport compared to the likes of Football, Tennis, Rugby and Formula 1... I would be very confident more people would know who Andy Murray is over Anthony Joshua.. Even Darts and snooker are probably more popular than boxing
Really? You think your average sports fan wouldn't recognise Haye? Or Fury? I'd say these were pretty well known people.

Football is obviously light years beyond the rest but the big names in boxing have always been pretty famous. Joshua is massive but so were Hatton, Calzaghe, Lewis, Bruno, Eubank, Hamed and Benn.

A lot of it depends on if we (as in the UK) are any good at a particular sport at that period of time. Andy Murray is a proper household name but ask at the same time when the best was Jeremy Bates and you'd get plenty of blank stares.
Boxing is all Hype and money the average joe in the street won’t know any of the superstars in boxing.. It’s a minority sport that’s getting Raped by the greed of the promoters.. Look at Joe Calzaghe arguably our greatest ever boxer.. How well off do you think he is?? Do you think he has more money than Eddie Hearn or allegedly?? Boxing is the most corrupt sport I have ever been involved In.. I would love to see Warren or Hearn do a 12 rounder with an average journeyman would soon change their mind about the way they treat boxers.. I have been in the ring sparring and it’s horrible and what these lads need to put them through deserves so much more.. We have a bit of banter on here but until the fans stop buying into the hype and the BBBofC start forcing promoters and managers to work in the best interest of fighters then it’s all just a big circus.. AJ is a prime example lost twice in the Olympics money talks its as simple as that

Mate you have just named a shed load of fighters there that are different weights haha. So I'll address them all. Fedor v lesnar wasn't made cause lesnar held a ufc title and fought the number 1 contender each time before losing and going to wwe. Dan Henderson didn't fight Jones because he lost to Daniel Cormier who in turn got the Jones fight. Also he campaigned at a different weight at times and in truth didn't fancy it. GSP v Silva was never gonna happen. A small welterweight against a big middleweight. Fantasy match up. Of course you have bellator, ufc and cage warriors and Japanese mma but all the top fighters get signed to ufc and no matter what is said or done the number 1 fighter will get his title fight . Fact.

But all that just sounds like excuses which can also be made in any sport. If the fans want to see a fight then they want to see a fight; it's never going to appease them by saying 'well this guy is with this organisation and this guy is with another organisation and the first guy has a mandatory so, sorry, can't happen.' That's exactly the sort of thing people rightly moan about in boxing when you have two guys with different promoters, TV contracts and other obligations. If you have one guy in UFC and another guy in UFC and fans are literally chanting for GSP at a Silva fight and you're Dana White, make it happen. Stick it in as a catchweight. And don't pretend that you're giving the fans what they want by not making it.

But, the thing is, they usually happen. Mayweather did indeed fight Pacquaio. Canelo fought Golovkin. Lewis fought Tyson. If you were a betting man I'd say that you would have to assume it to be very, very likely that Joshua will fight Wilder, and if he gets in shape, at least one of them will fight Fury. Now you might say some of these fights took too long to make. And you might say that this damaged them as an event. But they were massive, and generated loads of money, and made people including the fighters rich, and saw millions of people watching them.

So my point is that whilst it's fine to criticise the politics of boxing, the same thing can happen, and has happened, and will happen again, in MMA.

Mate the weight differences in mma are huge. 10lbs. U seen the size difference between gsp and Silva?

They overcook every single fight in boxing. Its embaressing. Even fury v wlad was overcooked with Tyson waiting for ages to get it. Boxing is manufactured. As much as crolla is a nice guy he was manoevered due to his popularity. He's never been the best in Britain never mind the world. Against Ricky burns he was given a decision due to the ability to sell out an arena and nothing more. Not a chance he won that fight.

My original point is governing bodies can be convinced to put any fight on if the cash is right. Michael conlan is an insane talent yet some of his fights it's beyond wrong. Someone can get seriously hurt. I look at lomachenko and how he turned over and that's exactly how it should be, and on the other side he was beaten due to another fighter essentially cheating and not making weight by a big amount, but due to promotors he had to fight... he should have walked away and been given his purse. These guys have alot to lose but are forced into things by people who couldn't throw a baseball never mind a punch.

Being seen on TV is obviously the key to whether a sportsman is recognised on the street. I know a guy who competes at world level in his sport and has had to work extremely hard over a period of ten years plus at what is a surprisingly gruelling activity to get where he is now, which is both World and European champion and having competed in the Rio Olympics. He will probably be an unknown to the average person and struggles to get even modest sponsorship - but that's just how it is with some sports. Just taking part still counts.

As far as I'm concerned, MMA has overtaken boxing. I'm looking forward to Linares lomachenko but I know lomachenko is going to win. The fight I'm most looking forward to this weekend is jacare vs gastelum

How many fighters in ufc fail drug tests compared boxing? Most of bispings losses have failed drug tests wenderlei silva, hendersonand Evans all failed drug tests thats why gsp leftthe sport. The only thing UFC has over boxing is UFC is an organisation within mma so who they match up has to fight were as boxing is a sport with all different promotions within it so the top guys dont fight each other because of beef between promotors or fighters being on rival tv companies.

As far as I'm concerned, MMA has overtaken boxing.
Boxers get paid more
Boxing gets more TV exposure
Boxing gets more print exposure
Boxing generates higher live audiences
Boxing generates higher TV audiences
Boxing has more shows
Boxing generates more revenue
Boxing is a substantially bigger sport

Boxing doesn’t have to ‘lose’ for MMA to ‘win’ but currently MMA hasn’t overtaken boxing in any measurable way

I fully agree with your point about Conlan. Top amateurs who turn need to moved quicker as fighting guys who’ve had history being KO’d several times. We seem to be getting better in the U.K. (Josh Kelly, Okolie for example) but still needs to get significantly better.

Re: Darren Till, it’s not all down to him that the demand for tickets is high. It’s the first time UFC has come to Liverpool and compared to most (if not all) UFC shows in England over the last few years the Echo is small in comparison to the other arenas. The UFC has consistently sold well at the O2 and Manchester Arena (with the exception of one show at the MEN where they massively overpriced the tickets a few years back) so I’m sure they could do 30k tickets in some stadium but they wouldn’t sell out Wembley. MMA and UFC in particular is very different to boxing in that sense. I’ve got a group of mates at work who go to every UK UFC show regardless of who’s fighting.

A lot of the ufc show in Liverpool tickets went to touts. It's ridiculous how this can still happen in every sport

Also if this card was outside of Liverpool there wouldn't be as much demand. A lot of people around here are excited to see Till and it's the 1st time ufc has been on in Liverpool as the another poster mentioned

Boxing is still a lot bigger but some of the match making is ridiculous. It's also starting to get more like WWE. I saw on here people complaining that Wilder didn't go to Aj Parker. People annoyed they didn't have some sort of cringey show down in the ring after the fight. It's a few years away from being as bad as WWE

And UFC doesn’t have hack publicity bullshit?
It’s dreadful yes, but not an area in which either sport can take the moral high ground.

I don’t mind the WWE style stuff. If Wilder had jumped into the ring after AJ v Parker then it would have got more people, newspapers etc. talking about the fight which is only a good thing for boxing. It happened, albeit to a lesser extent, when Fury jumped in the ring with Wilder a few years ago.

It clearly wouldn’t impact on the majority of us watching the big fights but clearly the additional publicity would drive more casuals to watch.

MMA is more exciting. The UFC card last night had 11 finishes. It's a shame Till is fighting Thompson though. He is going to get absolutely schooled in there over 5 rounds and a lot of potential MMA fans in Liverpool will be turned off the sport. If he actually manages to win, the hype will get ridiculous but Thompson is very elite and controls the distance too well. The good thing about that fight is that Till has to come forward and apply pressure and take the kicks away so it will be a good fight to watch. If he stands back he'll get kicked to death
