I felt while watching that Duran was always in charge. But he just wasn't able to overwhelm Lampkin the way he did most opponents.

Lampkin was probably his toughest lightweight foe besides DeJesus. Duran had fewer problems with the even more talented Scotsman Ken Buchanan.

Considering the UK base of BoxRec, I wonder why Buchanan doesn't get more play around here.

I saw him live once at the LA Sports Arena against Ruben Navarro.

It wasn't his best performance but Buchanan still dazzled.

Duran avoided several rematch dates with Buchanan. I believe that's why the WBC eventually stripped him.

Not much in the way of history buffs here I'm afraid. Buchanan was a warrior for sure. Pretty 'odd' situation in first Duran fight, yes? I'm a huge Duran fan and I never could understand why no rematch. Buchanan had to ice his marbles after the fight.

Yeah, he went to the hospital with swelling and fluid in his nuts.

Buchanan's corner insisted it was a knee to the groin by Duran. But replays clearly show a fist struck very low.

Duran's knee did come up but it didn't appear to make contact.

Duran was an animal that night. He must have gone on a non stop party afterward because a few months later he was very lackluster in dropping a decision to DeJesus.

Ray Lampkin had a bout with Vilomar Fernandez at Madison Square Garden after he sustained a serious injury when he was stopped by Roberto Duran. In the bout with Fernandez, Lampkin looked to be very shaky on his legs and was knocked down once. Lampkin went on to lose the bout by decision.

After the Fernandez-Lampkin bout, a concerned individual from New York got ahold of the California boxing authorities to tell them that Lampkin looked very shaky. The concerned individual also took Lampkin's serious injury sustained in the bout with Duran into account when contacting California authorities. After being contacted by the concerned individual, California authorities didn't permit Lampkin's scheduled bout in California to take place. In fact, Lampkin never fought in California again.

I remember Lightning Ray Lampkin...

I remember the Duran fight like it was yesterday.. Jerry Quarry was commentating and said both fighters had lost a drastic amount of weight.. "They could both challenge for the Featherweight Title right now."... Quarry showed no signs of brain damage then.. Guys can leave Boxing and seem okay.. 5 years later they get lost driving home from work.

Lampkin was fast but wide open.. It was his 4th loss and he was over matched... I remember Duran padding his record with a lot 3rd raters at that time....3 out of his 4 previous opponents had 4 or fewer fights... Two of his next 3 opponents had 4 or fewer fights... Matchups like that wouldn't be allowed today... Duran was still defiant after the victory... Duran shouted in Spanish "If I fight Lampkin again I'LL KILL HIM" ... The interpreter used exactly those chilling words.

I remember going to the gym the next day and people were talking about the fight... A name Heavyweight was raving about Duran's performance... "Duran is a STONE KILLER" he said, grinning like an ape... I agreed.

My thoughts about Lampkin are - he wasn't half as good as the brilliant Devin Haney who we saw Friday night vs Menard... Haney is faster than Lampkin, but technically superb and a masterful defender... Haney would not be beaten by somebody like Duran and will give very tough fights to guys like Vasyl Lomachenko and Mikey Garcia when those fights are eventually made... Haney is 19 and coming on like gangbusters... Be on the lookout for him.. He's headed for big fights.
