It's a hard job, dealing with plums day in day out. The professional press are a nightmare to deal with, on top of that with boxing you seem to get all these "internet journos" that are nothing more than guys that love boxing and think being a journo is easy.

There is a lot of money in rugby. The players have a 100k plus a year contract, plus whatever deal from their regions or clubs.
Coaches get good big money too. There is a lot of sponsorship and TV money is pretty good too.
Its true it cant and never will catch up with football and likewise it won't match the mega earners like Joshua, but its fair to say there is a lot of money floating about, just not in media communications/PR.
The top job with the WRU is just about 50k. But, there is a nice car thrown in and several foreign trips a year. All food, entertainment etc is paid for, so if you tour South Africa, Australia or wherever you literally don't put your hand in your pocket. (Unless you go to a casino, or horse racing etc)
Plus, every four years you have a 1 in 4 chance of going away with the Lions, which is a nice earner on top of your usual salary.

If you look at the advert for the matchroom job, you'll see everything that is required. It's a big job in this day and age.
The WRU job, you don't have to write the programmes, but you do have to oversee them. Social Media os fairly easy once you get going. It will be easier for rugby than boxing because there are strict rules for the players. Its highly unusual to get a player drop a bombshell like some boxers do.
You pretty much deal with the professional press and they are pretty respectful and play fairly.
Loads and loads of networking with journos and making sure players actually honour whatever media commitments they have.
Personally, I would much rather do to the 50k rugby job than a 100k matchroom one and I love boxing, far, far more than I love rugby.....but it is a massive job and I guarantee the wage won't match the hours and stress put in.
The advert looks like the job entails literally every, single bit of media and PR. It will easily be a 70 to 80 hour week for probably 75% of the year. Very little down time.
The other thing I noticed, "competitive salary". That can mean anything. It also says that they want to know what you earn now. They'll no doubt base what you'll earn from them on where you are now.
90% of corporate communications/media work is for shit money. Rugby again, a regional club pay about 25k per year for their media bloke/girl.
Top executives earn 100k plus, but won't touch this job with a barge pole. Not when there is safer, easier options out there at that level.
Some poor fornicator will end up doing this job for 40k a year plus a few perks and will burn out within a year and it'll get advertised again.

I think the same - they will probably hire a recent graduate who is happy to do the job 24/7 for a couple of years before moving on.

I ain’t lived there for 25 years so I have lost track. Over here in Norway 40k would not buy you a pot to pish in

Spot on sir. I have worked in boxing for 25 years, the last 10 partime but prior to that I did pretty much exactly that job discription and it ruined me. Believe me when I say it takes over your life. phone rings 24 hours a day, seven days a week and your never home. The weight piled on and the stress became more and more. whoever takes on that job needs to be paid well for the wear and tear alone. Its worth £100,000 a year but they won't pay that. If Matchroom were clever they would cherry pick two very experienced and knowledgeable people and offer them a job share for £40k or £50k each. I'd seriously consider it if I job share

Word on the street is that Warren press guy (well ex-press guy) went for the job and got it. I thought Maynard might have gone for it (guess Hayemaker paying him a lot) Well done Dan

The average wage in the uk is just over £27k so £40k would be a decent wage but not for that job, a head of Media position in London tends to pay between £50-£60k and that's working normal hours, this job would be crazy and unsociable hours, I think it would pay a lot, maybe six figures, cracking job for someone though.

I basically did the same job for Hatton for six years. It was the best experience of my life although I escaped much of the madness as I worked on a consultancy basis and always had a job outside of boxing as well.

Matchroom, however, is a completely different proposition due to the sheer size of their operation now. Anyone taking this on needs to be young, prepared to work odd hours and spend quite a bit of time away from family etc.

As well as you do all the things listed in the job description, a big part of the role is managing people's egos and working essentially as the go between of the company and the boxers. You often find yourself working as a fighter's agony aunt. I did everything from write character references for people to answering the phone to a boxer at two am because he wanted me to help him connect his iPad to a hotel's wifi.

Dan Barnard got the job and fits that description.
