Manged to speak with Peter Manfredo, Ishe Smith and Sergio Mora for a Contender Revisited piece in this week's Boxing News.

Only watched the first season up to the final. ITV spoiled it for me; the suspense of the semi finals and they cut to an ad break and there’s a trailer at the end to say dot forget to tune in next week for the final - Mora vs Mandredo.

Ruined it for me.

It must be 10 years ago but I still remember Alfonso Gomez being first up and picking to fight Peter Manfredo who was the favourite, and everyone looking at him as though he was nuts - great tv.

Up there with the first ever Prizefighter as being great boxing tv.
Yeah ... I thought it was great ... (except for the foot-races and stuff) ... I actually thought it would "bring back boxing" ... Hell ... it was on a major network! ... NBC ... but the tide was against it ... boxing was in decline and there was no fighting it ... I was greatly disappointed when it didn't catch on ...

... and I would be greatly surprised if it does any better this time around ... (unfortunately) ...
If I remember right The Contender was on the same night and time as American Idol............................the season Carrie Underwood was on that show.
Back then scheduling opposite American Idol was a great way to ensure low ratings.

I remember there was a young boxer from the first series who committed suicide not long after getting knocked out the tournament Najai Turpin, shot himself in his car with his mrs and 2 year old daughter inside, rumours that he was frustrated by not being allowed to continue fighting by the producers until the series aired so as to not spoil the ending and he also in a custody battle

I remember after the episode he fought on there was a dedication at the end, tragic

Aye I remember that mate. Robin Reid fought on it didn't he?
Aye 5 v 5 if I remember right, we got hammered off the Yanks and I'm pretty sure our only winner was Anthony "Isis" Small
My mate fought K9 Bundradge on this show. Thought he'd have outboxed him but he had a rib injury.

Remember the first few series' . Liked them. Gave a few good fighters exposure. Mora did well outta it, Bundrage and Smith too. Always liked Alfonso Gomez and willed him on...always like that relaxed in the pocket and out style of fighting. Manfredo was robbed early :TU:

I had high hopes for Sergio Mora after that show as I thought he looked the real deal. Never quite reach the level I thought he would in the end though. the show was great but got a little bit too slushy and sentimental towards the end; I remember Sugar Ray Leonard giving someone a 'bracelet of bravery' or some such thing, at which point I switched off.
