Yes mate, Chas is an absolute gent. I once casually mentioned to him that I wasn't sure how to get out of Milton Keynes at the end of an amateur international there (England v Poland) and he escorted me out of the town in his black cab, which says it all. I suppose you could describe Chas as the last of the gym rats. He knew all the fighters, trainers, promoters and all the gossip. He told me a funny story about Randy Neumann, the American referee who came over in 1987 to handle the Terry Marsh world title win in Basildon. Randy had been over a decade earlier as a powerful heavyweight, walking through Billy Aird in real style but the years had not been particularly kind to Neumann. He took a cab at Heathrow and mentioned to the driver that he had fought Billy Aird. "You're too old to have fought Billy Aird!" came the reply.
