Ossyrules wrote: 29 Sep 2018, 07:08 I’m a big groves fan, but honestly, even at the age of 30 I think he should hang em up

He’s had a career that British boxing should be proud of though.

Low - frustration on missing out on Beijing for degale

High - beating his big rival degale for the British title. A fight many would let “marinate”. Great that two young undefeated lions put it on the line

Low - fall out with booth in the Froch 1 camp

High - what he did in and out the ring for Froch 1 was incredible really. Groves made the fight much bigger with his pre fight talk etc. His performance vs Froch might still be his best

Low - ref howler stopping him in Froch 1

High - making 80k event with Froch. We can take it for granted now Joshua does it every time. But this was huge. And it takes two to tango, but groves more than played his part

Low - devastating ko defeat to a perfect punch

Low - SD loss to jack. No shame in the performance, but nit his day

High - teaming up with McGuigan and rebuilding when a lot said he was finished

High - stoppage win over chudinov to finally reach the summit after 4 attempts

High - clinical win over Eubank jr to silence more doubters

Low - dislocated shoulder requiring surgery

Low - put away emphatically by Smith

It’s been a rollercoaster. But groves looked slow compared to his usual self vs Smith. He’s had the shoulder problem, and I never belief boxers are as good as new, despite what they say.

Groves career in a way could have been even better with a more stable foundation, for example if the booth fall out didn’t happen etc. But really he should be appreciated, and his perserverence to finally win the WBA is huge.

So I say good luck to him. Nothing left to prove
Nice post Ozzie :TU:
I'm a fan too, how could you not be?
I disagree about George retiring though. Plenty of good domestic and international fights ID he wants them. Matched carefully he can still have success and still entertain us fans. He can box, and loves to fight, if he still wants it, and can do it without getting hurt, I'm there :salut:

I'll always root for him. His ringside interview after the dodgy Froch stoppage was one of the classiest things I've seen in boxing.

And he talked his way into a massive rematch payday.

Clever guy. The anti-Degale.

Its a shame DeGale vacated the IBF - as a rematch would be appealing with the world title on the line still. I think thought Groves needs to think about retiring.... yes, perhaps there is some option for Fielding - Don't Suarland have a rematch clause with Fielding.... well if it is, then surely it is Groves. I cannot see the Groves of Yesterday beating anyone else with a title.

I'm sure he's trousered enough to live comfortably for the rest of his life, so why not retire at the top ?

Correct me if I’m wrong!
Was he ahead on the cards ?
Saw the fight and although nip and tuck until the ko I'm surprised at that .
Smith had landed heavier shots in the 2 or 3 rounds previous .
The report I read said that he was, perhaps inaccurate! I haven’t seen it but it didn’t sound like he was dominated from what I’ve read.

I would prefer he retired but there’s probably another decent payday out there for him if he wants it...

not one for an over reaction to a defeat but it feels like a good time to stop George. He's packed everything into his career, made a ton of money not sure what's left for him.

No desire to see the degale fight now.

Think he'd make a great trainer.

I'd push for the Degale fight (presuming he wins his next fight). Both are not the fighters they were but it would give groves a good chance to go out with a belt,on a win and hopefully not a bad pay check. If that fights not there for him I think he should hang em up he's had a great career

I thought DeGale had vacated his IBF ?

Maybe Degale but I really wouldn't want to see Groves losing against fighters who were levels below him in his prime.

It would still be watchable though, just to see what they have left,it's very even in my eyes.

Unless Groves wants the cash there's no point in giving Degale a fight.

He's beaten him in the amateurs and the pro ranks. Degale was disrespectful too. It will always stick in Degales's craw that he lost twice to Groves. Better to leave it like that if you're Groves
