Hughie is domestic level. That is not an insult it is just where he is. I have not figured out how some were saying he could give Joshua fits.
I wouldn't favor him over anyone in the top 20.

Somebody said earlier in the thread that Hughie has an excellent jab???
He has no left hand whatsoever, he has no jab at all, and that may be his main problem.
For all his background as an amateur and a pro, he simply hasn't got it. He fights the way he does( going backwards and pawing out his left and swinging stupid big right handeds like a novice) because he can't fight any other way. If he wants to continue he needs completely re-built by somebody of proven ability.
I know the idea is to hit and not be hit, but when your losing in big fights there has to be a back-up plan.

Hughie isn't as good as I thought he might be, at least at this stage of the game, even though I thought he beat Parker.

To win a belt he'd have to be in with a really terrible paper champ.
Like big Chuckles Martin
He strides the earth like a god.....unfortunately its that little fat god of good luck you see in chinese restauraunts.

Yeah him and brezeale spring to mind.
I'd actually fancy big Dom to beat Hughie.

Could probably count on the one hand the amount of jabs he landed last night. I thought he looked a lot slower than usual as well.

Spot on.
The talent is there, but - for whatever reason - it can't or won't shine. Hopefully at 24 he can sort it out and have a Johnny Nelson ending, rather than an Audley Harrison ending.

I don’t think its easy at all when you are surrounded by people saying your doing great and doing the right thing.

Go and read the start of the Pulev v Fury thread before the fight happened. People predicting late stoppages or a thoroughly outboxed Pulev to quit. Some of the same people and some of those around Fury will tell him last night was all down to the cut.

Put Fury in with Oulev 100 times and he loses every time unless Pulev gets injured or disqualified.

That was me with the jab comment, should’ve been more clear, just meant that when he has actually thrown it in the past it has looked good but unfortunately he seems to have completely forgotten about it these days.

He comes across as a quite likeable, simple lad (genuinely not intended to be insulting), but I do watch him questioning how much he wants to be there. Has he been ushered into boxing by the family because he’s been offered few other options? The Fury’s are hardly short of cash since they practically self fund, but do they really see him as an actual prospect, or is it a case of just trying to keep up the family name. Now Tyson has left, would Peter continue to train without his son in the stable?
Obviously five years could change everything and we could be discussing Hughie in a completely different light, but mammoth changes in his style and conditioning need to be made. I was quite hopeful, as a Brit, for an improvement in his performance judging by the pre-fight pictures. I thought there might be a greater chance of some increased aggression as a result of him filling out a bit, but sadly it was the well treaded, retreat to the corner and prey for the counter tactics.

he's just a very negative fighter in everything he wants to do. Last night when he had to put it on Pulev it just looked clumsy and false because he is so used to boxing negatively it don't come naturally to him.

and also, im not sure if his jab is really that good at the higher levels. too often he throws it out of range as an air punch. pulev actually is one of the better jabbers at the higher levels and he clearly outjabbed hughie and sliced him up with it

clearly, he can be a tricky hard to hit clean opponent even for top 10 fighters, but as far as actually going over the line to win at top level, hes not there yet. hes young an maybe will make the improvements, but improvment isnt assured just because hes young
Nice one Jammy :TU:
I would add that given it was his second big chance in the Pulev fight, his fitness was deplorable for a 24 year old, and you have to ask how bad does he want it?

One of the main reasons i picked Hughie to win was his age and presumed fitness,he was much less fit than Pulev however.

I'm guilty of that too. Pulev's age and inactivity Vs Huggie's age and activity. How wrong we were. I'd be pissed off at Huggie if I had some money on him. Since I didn't, I'm just disappointed in his fitness. Even if your lacking in boxing skills, you can at least come in the shape of your life. Eubank Jr has made a career of it

You do have to wonder whether Hughie's heart is really in it. Perhaps he was forced into boxing because it's the family business.

He certainly never looks to be enjoying it in there that much.

I've had discussions on here where i tried my best to make a point for a Hughie win,i thought i could see some good skills there and with a bit of confidence he would come out of his shell,i truly couldn't see Pulev winning last night pre fight, however after the first couple of rounds he seemed to go to pieces, still young though i suppose but have my doubts now as whether he'll get past British level, which by the way is no shame.

I didn’t watch the fight as I decided to watch the X factor.

It was shite, but I got what what I was expecting - and it was less shite than what I though the fight was going to be.

It looks as though I made the right decision.

What I don’t understand though is people actually tuned into the fight expecting Hughie to do something he had never done before.

Fair enough - I an just to cynical about anything to do with boxing these days.

One thing that surprises me is that the tactical genius that is Peter cannot see what 99% of tv viewers saw?

Peter clearly specialises in negative, awkward styles. Luckily Tyson has more to his game and is freakishly big so it works better for him.

Hughie could do with a different approach maybe, just to shake it up a bit. Get back on the special beef too perhaps?

I found it amusing reading people here claiming Pulevs stamina means he’s juicing. The Fury’s have more previous for juicing than anyone they have fought!

I was sat watching last night i thought Peter will surely tell him about the telegraphed right hands and he'll make adjustments, but no,he carried on and on missing more and more as the rounds went by.

I think Peter falls into the Calzaghe category, he was very fortunate that him and Tyson just worked.

To be fair to Peter, he was interviewed by IFL just after the fight and he analysed it perfectly imo - summarised exactly what went wrong and explained why the tactics went out of the window early on. Even admitted Hughie had completely lost his shape and was just surviving by the end. So it’s not a question of him not seeing the flaws as a trainer, it’s just not always possible to correct them mid-fight.

I thought he went overboard about the cut.
He was saying Hughie’s eyeball was hanging out! The cut occurred in the 2nd round and didn’t really get much worse. Sure it was uncomfortable but beforehand all they were saying was ‘it’s bigger than any fight out there for Hughie, bigger than a Joshua fight’ etc

I was a little disappointed with Hughie. I hoped for more.

Peter Fury tried to blame the defeat on the cut. Not for me. He was tough enough but just seemed clueless in there.

Joshua and Wilder would destroy him on that showing.
