Filip Hrgovic (6-0, 5 KOs) has a new opponent set for his heavyweight showdown on Saturday at the KC Drazen Petrovic with former World title challenger Kevin ‘Kingpin’ Johnson (32-11-1, 16 KOs) replacing Ytalo Perea.

Perea was due to arrive in Zagreb on Tuesday, but did not make his scheduled connection from Bogota. Later, it became apparent, despite previous assurances, that he did not possess the necessary documents to travel.

With no time to spare, the call went out for a suitable replacement, and Johnson, currently based in Germany, where he recorded a knockout win last Saturday, was placed on standby earlier this week and arrived in Zagreb today.

Probably yeah. I don't even know, how good this is for Hrgovic. On the one hand, Johnson is difficult to hit clean, on the other hand, he'll provide no danger.

Hrgovic will take him out round 7 or 8. Johnson is a shot fighter, but has enough to delay the inevitable.

aj destroyed johnson in 2 but even these top prospects really struggle to dent him and get to him

Joshua and Hrgović have different styles, that Joshua knocked out Johnson and Hrgović did (and generally that AJ scored more impressive KO's over bums than Hrgović) doesnt mean that the latter is worse. Comparing Joshua and Hrgović is a bit like comparing Wlad and Vit Klitschko.

Hrgovic outworked utterly defensive Johnson, as it had been expected. There was a KD though, it was a legit one, I'd say. Johnson would have been dropped, if not the ropes.

Johnson just has too many losses now.. he’s good for taking boxers the distance.. that’s it. He doesn’t do shît all though.

His defensive skills are solid, he just comes out there with his shell to hide in it and get paid.

among the 2016 olympics participant imo only Hrgović is the real danger for Joshua, but not earlier than in 2020

I wouldn't be at all sure about Joshua destroying Dubois, Ajagba, Makhmudov, or Joyce. What exactly would this be based on?

As of today, he would. Maybe another fight or two for each will give us more of an idea of what level of fighter each can attain. Best bet: Dubois.

Nice win as expected for Hrgovic. Filip and Joyce are being brought along quicker than the other HWs from class of 2016.

Johnson has a superb defense. He blocked every punch with his face!

A fair few of the 2016 class were about in the years prior to that, some overlapped Joshua, who had already beaten Dychko for example. Since then Joshua’s progress has been so far beyond the rest mentioned here it’s not even comparable.

I suspect that 41 year old Wlad is far better than almost all of the up and coming fighters will ever be, and Joshua has improved since then too, and he’s still improving.

Of course at heavyweight you can never tell but signs don’t bode too well for the next generation. Dubois is obviously a bit different as he’s a baby. Dychko, Makhmudov, Joyce, Hrgovic aren’t all that young though, some are Joshua’s age. Of them all I suspect Hrgović is the one to watch but even then I think Joshua will be too much for him.

It’s still going to be interesting watching how they all progress though.

Wladimir Klitschko generally held a size advantage over the guys he was fighting, that wouldn't be the case against many of the guys coming up like Hrgovic, Joyce, Dychko, and Makhmudov. Somehow I don't think Wladimir is going to be as affective against athletic, skilled heavyweights who can match or surpass him size-wise.

Wladimir had already been beaten by Tyson Fury prior to beating Joshua. I think its likely he was in decline by the time he faced Joshua.
