its not clear the final barrage actually caused it itself, i recall commenting during the fight that stevenson looked physically very uncomfortable and had poor body language well before. he looked more uncomfortable then ive seen

it wasnt really an awfully late stoppage, there was like just a second or two whete i was saying stop it

and actually at the end of the 10th i thought he looked pretty much done even though hed buzzed gvo that round and clearly won it. he got hit with some hard shots near the Web end of that round

He looked pretty knackered towards the end of the Jack fight too.

This video shows referees saving fighters from injury by stopping the fights. The sequence opens with the most horrible non-stoppage, that being Griffith v. Paret. That is what a bad referee looks like, NOT the ref in the Stevenson fight.

The real question should be at what point are boxing licenses not given out like samples at the grocery store? 40 year old boxers should have a more rigorous vetting in place. Boxers should be required to have periodic brain scans so that damage can be identified through comparison of prior years. The days of a doctor grabbing ur nuts and asking you to cough to determine if you’re fit to fight should be over.

I’ll go as far as to say that a younger boxer probably wouldn’t have gone to the hospital as a result of those punches Adonis ended up taking. Adonis has a lot of miles on him and has taken a ton of punches just coming out of Manny’s gym never mind the pro fights.

Agreed. Fighters need a better medical clearance process. Something more than what's in place today for sure. Post fight medicals are also in dire need of more scrutiny and completeness. All boxing governing boards need to step up and ensure the safety of its' fighters.

Catscans MRIS and such cost thousands.
No way can fighters or promoters can carry this financial burden. Most fighters don't make even close to that amount per fight.
I agree that more stringent testing is needed. But how can it be made affordable?

What for? He didn't do anything wrong. The refs who should be having sleepless nights over what they did in the ring and the money they got under the table, they don't.

Exactly, the coach knows his boxer better than anybody else involved in the fight.

just because he was 40 doesnt mean that age was a big factor or that he wouldnt have passed a thorough medical

Yeh. True. Some fighters stay in the game longer due to not suffering this type of damage or even milder. Stevenson was facing soft opposition for a few years. Then fough Jack.. got rocked and was exhausted towards the end. Then Gvozdyk who did much more against Stevenson that Jack did.

Landed a lot of clean punches. Again Stevenson was exhausted in the late rounds. Could see it. They were never gonna oil him out. They probably though he can get through another round or so and win on points.

Very disappointing also reading conflicting information from other sources. These internet journalists have no ethics and standards.

Tbf sometimes the refs are dammned if they do and dammned if they don't.. It's an awful situation agreed but if the ref were to stop earlier and say no harm done I would expect there wouldve been people out there saying it was stopped to early.. I've seen some awful decision by the refs over my time this isn't one of them.. I really hope the best for all concerned Stevenson the ref and of course not forgetting gvogstyk..
