I thought it was close and could have gone either way. Horrible fight though, unlike most of Jerrys fights.
Hard to watch because Jerry didn't do anything. Other fights of his are hard to watch because of the punishment he took like Frazier 2.

I just watched. I read Jerry got a close decision in London against Larry Middleton. I'd love to see footage of Quarry-Middleton.

What close decisions did Jerry deserve? What close decisions get Jerry get?
I dunno, but what were the scorecards in the Quarry vrs Machen Fight ?
and in watching the video of the second Quarry vrs Patterson fight,Patterson thought he
may have landed more punches then Quarry.Anyone do a punch-count for that fight here ?

Supposedly Eddie Machen handed Quarry easily.

Machen handled Quarry "easily" ?

"In the closing minutes of the hard-fought, action-packed battle, Quarry, losing his first professional fight, was bleary eyed and in danger of going down."

Quarry apparently won the first three rounds and then Machen took over and with each succeeding round became more dominant.

According to the LA Times "Referee Tommy Hart voted Machen 5-4, Judge George Latka had it 6-5, and rookie judge Larry Rozadilla had 7-2. Rozadilla's figure was the closest to the score most ringsiders had. The Times voted for Eddie 6-3."

The Times says Quarry couldnt even lift his arms in the last couple of rounds.

Its perilous to make assumptions about a 10 round fight based on 6 minutes of footage.

well he looked really good for those 2 rounds anyway.
What was Jerry Quarry's account of the fight ?
Maybe he was thumbed or fouled after the first few rounds ?
doesn't sound like a usual Jerry Quarry boxing performace to me.
although I did read somewhere that Jerry Quarry did not train properly
for the Machen fight such as not doing thr road-work in the morning.
This was the fight that Rocky Marciano had attended because he was thinking
of investing in Quarry, but walked out after 4 rounds !
( even tho reportedly Quarry was fighting good for the first 5 rounds
( he must have looked really exhausted in between rounds then like he did in the second fight with Muhammad Ali
some years later ).

Quarry had a stamina problem throughout his career. He would start fast and then fade in the middle rounds. sometimes he would get a second wind, sometimes he would not.

was there a Phantom Punch in this fight ?
The referee Zack Clayton ( who was standing just inches away) sounded certain
that the "knock-out" punch was a "Right hand to the corner of the chin"

Foster fight was brilliant. A one of Quarry's best performances.

Quarry was kind of shamed by this fight, similar to the Ellis fight. I have several interviews with him taken immediately after this fight and he doesnt really have an explanation. He just says he didnt have it that night, ran out of gas, and couldnt fight his fight, etc. All kind of canned answers. As a result of his issues with conditioning in this fight the guys who were developing what would eventually become Gatorade used him as a test subject for either the first London fight or the Billy Daniels fight. He trained using "the Aid" as it was called then and drank it between rounds they then monitored his performance to see how he maintained his energy level. They considered it a success but Jerry had issues with his stamina throughout his career. I think it boils down to styles. He could look really good against boxer/punchers that came to him and allowed him to counterpunch off the ropes, which was his speciality. But if a guy boxed him from the outside or really brought it to him he could have issues. I used to think he fought a stupid fight against Frazier and that the younger Quarry who was more apt to box and counterpunch would do better. Then I got ahold of the two sparring in 1966 and Quarry couldnt do anything with Joe. He spent the entire time pinned on the ropes getting pounded. They had to stop the sparring session when a Joe Frazier left hook pushed Quarry's teeth through his lip causing a nasty cut.

I watch it over and over.

All I see is a left hook that just barely grazed the top of Quarry's head. A haircut would have come closer.

Clayton did say it was an accurate punch to the corner of the chin.

Dunphy echoed those sentiments (or was he just afraid to contradict Clayton?) by describing it as a right hand "to the point of the jaw." Never saw that right hand, and Chuvalo's not such a quick puncher that I would miss it. Especially in slow motion.

Quarry didn't stick around to describe exactly what kind of shot put him down. He was winning undoubtedly but seemed sluggish. Maybe it was too quick a turnaround after the brutal Frazier fight.

Ellis/Quarry was extremely close, but i give it Ellis by one round.

The chuvalo fight was a horrible stoppage.

Is that true?

Was Neumann really giving Quarry a boxing lesson until a low blow?

The sequence looked good for Neumann but it was only a few seconds of action.

Boxers, on occasion, have been known to exaggerate their effectiveness when reminiscing about long ago bouts.
