Ruiz is a decent enough name to use on just 1 month's notice.

Neither Wilder nor Fury weren't going to rush in and volunteer as a replacement.

So who else was out there that would create any excitement for all the thumbs down, naysayers?

Ruiz would have smacked around Ledoux.

Ruiz reminds me a lot of David Tua - fast hands, amazing stamina and a go forwards style. He gave Joseph Parker an awful lot to think about despite looking badly out of condition.

Difficult to say what Joshua's strategy should be. Should he try to outbox the shorter smaller reach Ruiz the way Lewis did with Tua?

Or maybe just try to blast out a dangerous but slower and easy to hit opponent the way Tyson did to Tubbs?

ruiz certanly doesnt have amazing stamina

i thought he tooled parker the first half or so but then he faded in the second half and allowed parker to make up ground.

What was Ruiz's excuse for being out of shape again? Tua had a great punch, Ruiz not so much.

Ruiz much faster than Tua.

Only thing Tua had was a lethal hook and a granite chin.

Tua wasn't slow. He had quick hands to go along with that power. Not to mention great combination puncher. Can't compare Ruiz to Tua.

Ruiz would be a sparring partner in tuas era.

Just a one dimensional plodder. Never struck me as skilled at all. Just a big hook.

Did you see him do nothing against Maskaev but walk forward, miss and eat punches?

He showed nothing.

Fortunately for Tua, Maskaev tired badly late, and coupled with a fragile chin, he succumbed. But he was throwing a shutout until then.

Tua looked no better a few years later against Lewis. Nothing but plodding forward, throwing a few hooks that Lewis easily avoided.

Unfortunately for Tua, Lewis chin was sturdier than Maskaev's and there was no late bailout.

I always felt that the savvy Chris Byrd would clearly box Tua's ears off unless he became careless.

Too smart, mobile and adaptable to be bothered by a 1 trick pony like Tua.

Traded one fat guy for another. Not a lot of difference really. One fat guy had power, and size. This one is just fat.

He's more skilled than Tua, but there's nothing at all to get excited about with Ruiz. At least Tua might lay you out in spectacular fashion sometimes. Ruiz is never exciting...ever.

You thought right. Byrd did beat Tua clear in 2001 I believe it was. Just prior to my becoming a fan of the sport, but I'm aware of the result as my Boxing fandom started for both Tua and Byrd's very next fights I believe, and I saw a brief highlight package of the fight, and mentions of it and all that. Not to mention those first 3 or 4 years of Boxing fandom I was obsessed, and read and watched everything I could about the sport. Something my mind tends to do when something grabs my interest so intensely.

I have to disagree. I don't think there's one thing that Ruiz does better than Tua, except perhaps eat. Tua was fat looking as his Samoan genes impact that, but he was rock solid.

He has better defense, and a better jab. Those are 2 undeniable things he does better. As Tua had little in the way of defense, and virtually no jab, but yeah I'd rather watch Tua fight any day of the week than Ruiz....even now.

Better jab maybe. Better defense? Against better opposition Ruiz is hit often and easily. Tua wasn't much better but seemed to me to have better head movement to say the least, although that doesn't say much in this comparison.

After I wrote that I double checked. On occasion I remember things that didn't happen.

My obsession started in the mid 70s, but I think our obsessions started about at the same age. I was about 15.

Yep 14 or 15 for me. It was the tail end of 2001 so I would've been 14 when I first started, and by the time I had hit 15 I was already a full blown fanatic. I'm in Ring Magazine's "Come Out Writing" section in the August 2002 issue

A criticism of Roy Jones Jr, I wasn't all that high on him in my first year of Boxing fandom because he was constantly being touted as P4P #1, but I kept seeing him fighting no hopers, and bums, which is basically what my letter consisted of. I'm more proud of the latter two entries I got into the section as I later changed my mind a bit on Roy, but the latter two things I wrote into them. I stand by 100%, and haven't swayed from.
