So I know someone over at Dazn Japan. They have an exclusive deal with Yomiuri Giants to show all their games live on Dazn.

They played Hiroshima Carp at 14:00 (biggest challenger in their league), Canelo v Jacobs ring walks started about 12:45, so with build up to the big game, that might have had an impact on live streaming figures.

Edit: forgot to mention, these are baseball teams. It's the national sport in Japan.

It also coincided with a lot of live streamed J-league games (soccer)

Like GGG said, it was boring. I watched it though, for free, which I thought was a bit of an overcharge.

Actually, as the market becomes more global, do you think there is a chance that these big fights will be moved to a start time that is easier on the international audiences?

Like as I mentioned above this clashed with a lot of other sports in a large market like Japan.
And would have been like 4am in the UK...

I believe that DAZN owns worldwide rights to Canelo fights. If that is the case, they were paid by Televisa and TV Azteca for the right to broadcast to Mexico. Whatever they paid for those rights should be factored into the equation.

Given that the estimated Mexican audience was in the neighborhood of 30 million, approximately 23% of the overall population, DAZN likely made a substantial sum from that revenue stream.

And yet has NO domestic boxing content, which is often on free to air with satellite channels like G+ and boxing specialist service boxing raise showing stuff.

They do, I just find it odd their whole boxing content is international.

There's not many players in Japan that are free to negotiate a domestic deal and boxing has typically shied away from pay platforms in the country.

Inoue can draw 9mil on Fuji and affiliates, Murata and Ioka are also rating hits... So will only be a matter of time before they dip their toes and try a series similar to Dynamic Glove or Diamond Glove or Guys Fighting... Suspect they'll jump into bed with a lesser promoter in 2020/2021 if the Olympics goes well

I don't believe that's true.

Canelo has exclusive contracts with both Azteca and Televisa in in Mexico.

Both televise his bouts for free.

He was signed to these networks long before DAZN in America existed. All his fights since he became a high profile star have either been broadcast on one network or both.

DAZN has no presence in Mexico.

Canelo rakes in maybe another half of what DAZN pays him per bout from those Mexican networks.

Only 30 million or so watched the fight in Mexico, about a quarter of the country's population?

When I was there Saturday, it seemed like just about everyone was in the bars, restaurants, clubs and sports books at main event time.

Look outdoors and the streets were deserted.

Those are the numbers being reported.

Also, just because he had exclusives with Mexican broadcasters prior does not make it the case since the DAZN contract. I do not know. Just raising the subject.

Seems that $350 million would be for worldwide rights but . . . :maybe:

My point was that Televisa and Azteca wouldn't pay DAZN anything.

Canelo has separate contracts with all those networks.

Mexican boxing stars have been televised on free Mexican television for years. Even when the fights are broadcast on PPV in the US.

Judging from the commercials on those Mexican broadcasts, it appears that the beer industry, primarily Tecate, entirely subsidizes those free broadcasts.

many years. Used to be able to pick them up on UHF. We need a Tecate in the USA!

I am not arguing with the fact that he has had contracts with them. Contracts have terms. Are you certain that DAZN is not included in those terms in one way or another?

I am not. That does not mean that DAZN could not be frozen out of those revenues, but we do not have those contracts in front of us.

The ads always proclaim "Tecate--the official beer of boxing"

Decades ago I think Pabst and Schlitz were the official beers of boxing on the very old Friday Night Fights.

In past years I've seen in supermarkets Tecate offering a $20 rebate on boxing PPV's if you purchase a case of its beer.

That's a pretty good deal since Tecate is probably the cheapest Mexican beer and the $20 practically covers the cost of a 24 pack.

Does dazn still offer a free trial to new customers? If so I wonder how many of the viewers watched for free and have no intention of sticking around :maybe:

I know the trial is no longer available in the States but is it still available in their other territories?

They increased their critical mass and if a lot of those new subscribers stay with them then their future revenue base has gone up.

It's not just about who paid what on the night.

Yeah I signed up for the free month in Japan for this fight. But with Usyk picking up an injury and Joshua now fighting Ruiz Jr. What looked to be a great month to get the free trial, looks less so

Then again, Japanese don't seem to mind paying expensive subscriptions once they find a service they like

Going to a boxing gym out here is like $100-150/month

I don't think they would, if they don't have business in Mexico why would they?
