I'll have to go back and look. I remember the shot he nailed Ali with in the 12th(?).Onetimeonly wrote: ↑16 May 2019, 21:56 I think the shot he hit Ali with just before the bell in Rd 2 might have been the biggest shot ever that didn't produce a kd. Ernie did like room to operate, he's not getting that with Joe.

You could be right. The shot I'm speaking about was late in the fight and it was late in the round and Ali came out the next round still hurt but he psyched Shavers out by playing like he was wobbly legged and clowning. Shavers said later that he didn't trust Ali and didn't press the action but should've.Onetimeonly wrote: ↑16 May 2019, 22:08 I could be wrong, do you remember it being right before the bell?

We're both right. I went back and watched highlights.

If Quarry could blast Shavers out in a single round, I'd have to think Frazier could do it in five rounds or less.

That was a young and inexperienced Shavers. He was much better later in his career.HomicideHenry wrote: ↑17 May 2019, 14:42 If Quarry could blast Shavers out in a single round, I'd have to think Frazier could do it in five rounds or less.

Tim Witherspoon vs Joe Frazier seems like a classic. Also, Earnie Shavers vs Frazier.

What would have happened between Gerry Cooney and Smokin' Joe? This is a very interesting matchup. Cooney is 6'7". Frazier was 5'11 1/2".

If Cooney threw the uppercut, like Foreman did, he'd have a chance. It depends who got to one another first and kept it up. Somehow I think Frazier gets the upper hand of a brawl. When you are the bigger guy you don't want to give the smaller guy an even playing field giving up your advantages.elmersalsa wrote: ↑17 May 2019, 23:14 What would have happened between Gerry Cooney and Smokin' Joe? Frazier would have destroyed him.elmersalsa wrote: ↑17 May 2019, 23:14 What would have happened between Gerry Cooney and Smokin' Joe? This is a very interesting matchup. Cooney is 6'7". Frazier was 5'11 1/2".
Re: Smokin'Joe in the 80s Decade as Champion
Frazier would dominate in that era. The only questions, how much it would take from him then, when would his prime end. Some people say, his prime was over after the 1st Ali fight, some point at the 1st Foreman fight. In the 80s only Tyson could give Joe about the same tough fight. And would Joe be still there by the rise of Tyson? If yes, then he would very likely win even him. But if Frazier was on Holmes place, he wouldn't have the same opponents. And not only because there was his son.
I guess, if Smokin' Joe emerged in the 80, when there were 3 major belts, he would try to unify them all.

The Frazier fought Ali for the 3rd time in 1975, would have won all the fights that Holmes made successful title defenses in.

Just can't see him doing anything to Joe after the initial two rounds. Once Joe got in his rhythmn, Earnie is in major trouble.
