During 2016, Frānk Wārrĕn negotiated a deal with Oscar De La Hoya that would involve Billy Joe Saunders appearing on the undercard of the
Canelo-Smith bout, which was subject to certain conditions, with a view for the WBO champ facing the winner of that bout, but GBP reneged on the terms of the contract and Billy Joe's chances to face Saul Alvarez vanished into thin air.
Later on that year, GBP actually lobbied the WBO to instate
Canelo as Billy Joe Saunders’ mandatory challenger, which they agreed to do. So the Brit was obliged to face Oscar De Lay Hoya’s Mexican cash cow, but Alvarez very quickly changed his mind and renounced his status, preferring to face Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. instead.
During 2017, Saunders had signed a contract to face
GGG after his team had agreed the terms with Tom Loeffler.
In order to facilitate the fight, Frānk Wārrĕn had to pay Avtandil Khurtsidze a six-figure step-aside fee, coupled with having to agree to stage a bout for the Georgian against Tommy Langford for the WBO interim title, in order to get him to agree to step aside to allow Billy Joe to face
Gennady Golovkin instead, but the Kazakh ended-up “losing his pen”, due to receiving a bigger offer to face Canelo for their first bout.
When the Golovkin bout fell through, Saunders agreed to face
Avtandil Khurtsidze and the date for the bout and the venue was set. However, the Georgian then withdrew from the fight.
The following year, Tom Loeffler stated that a deal had been reached for
Golovkin to face Saunders if the talks for the rematch with Canelo broke down.
So
Golovkin refused to face Saunders on two occasions, despite deals being reached twice and Billy Joe agreeing terms. Regardless of the reasons,
GGG refused to accept guaranteed opportunities to face Billy Joe Saunders on two separate occasions.
During mid-2017,
David Lemieux admitted that had to refuse an offer to take on WBO middleweight world champion Billy Joe Saunders on September 16th, 2017.
On the 7th July, 2017,
Lemieux stated that he “really wanted to fight [Saunders], but the timing is not good for me because we are aiming for a bigger fight and the risks are high…"
At that moment in time, Lemieux was targeting a bout against Miguel Cotto.
Team Saunders also submitted three offers to
Chris Eubank Jr. for the rematch (£800K & £900K and apparently a seven-figure payday), which were all rejected.
Saunders had also signed to perform a mandatory defence of his title against
Demetrius Andrade, but this fight fell through when Billy Joe controversially tested positive for a substance that was banned by VADA, but not by WADA, USADA & UKAD.
It is believed that Billy Joe’s suspension from the MSAC & the WBO also scuppered his opportunity to face
James DeGale, which had been in the pipeline for quite some time (as 'Chunky' had appeared on numerous Frānk Wārrĕn cards).
If Billy Joe Saunders ends up engaging in multiple disappointing WBO title defences against lacklustre opposition, it won’t be because he’s unwilling to face anyone half-decent!
