True! That why I suspect 'he forget to show up.' -- Likely fought without much determination/motivation.
You can almost divide Roberto's career in half with the Laing fight; he re motivated himself for Cuevas and then , Moore Hagler, Hearns, Simms, and Barkley followed. Didn't win them all but didn't look bad again until Leonard III (and for that mess I blame both fighters.)

Almost every fighter go through it. It starts as a novice. Then a prospect. Then, if he reaches far, becomes champion. Then, after the championship reign (either short or long), loses the crown and have to get back to glory days, especially if the guy is a great boxer.
Another example, like Roberto Duran was Muhammad Ali. After his prime, the government bodies took his crown. Was in exile for 3 years and loses to Smokin' Joe and then Ken Norton.

Duran was in his 30s. An age when you got to consider retiring after 13 years in the ring and over 75 fights. Ali in his 30s went through some bad times, especially after the exile. The same we can say about the great Sugar Ray Robinson. He had a mid career crisis after he retired in 1952. Then, came back in 1955 and lost to Ralph "Tiger" Jones. Talking about career crisis. He had to regroup and beat Carl "Bobo" Olson to be champion for the fourth time.
