He’s fighting TFKoB, not Fury.

Tell us something we don't know AJ. Obviously nobody WANTED to be fighting the guy that kicked their ass. A guy that couldn't have kicked their ass is usually preferable

Next he'll be saying that someone massaged his legs!

He needs to just knuckle down and prepare himself for the rematch.

No-one is interested in bull crap excuses.

Just look at Lennox Lewis. He got starched by two run of the mill fighters and came back to cement his legacy. I don't think Joshua is a Lennox, but at least he should try and act like it and pretend to have the confidence that he will destroy the offending party in the rematch. Lennox may have been a lot of things but at least he always thought he was the best and anyone who beat him just got lucky. I don't think Joshua actually believes that anymore.

I think that this is what happens when a boxer gets handed blue chip kind of money before proving it or earning it. Even Floyd had to fight many years for chump change before grabbing his first million dollar payday. Manny as well. Those guys weren’t given anything in those learning years in the pros.

I am seeing that AJ currently has s 60m net worth and he hasn’t had a real significant win yet. Where’s that fire going to come from in a sport that’s so dangerous? Maybe public pressure could do it for one or two fights in future. But I don’t see AJ sticking around for glory

i think that was a fair enough little explanatory piece.
i don't think he made any excuses at all. basically just confirmed that he never recovered from the clip on the temple.
didn't want to be facing ruiz - only in so far as he was chasing the wilder fight. could have said the same for the povetkin fight, especially had it ended in a loss.

the rematch will be intriguing. aj has the physical advantages, yet ruiz will be soaring in confidence, has a solid chin, and so on.
i think aj would plan to be a lot more disciplined and box like he did against parker. but will pride get the better of him, and can ruiz drag him into exchanges?

The mental side of a fight is important, but saying he wasn't motivated for the fight after the loss and after praising Ruiz at first, it needs to stop and he needs to get back to work.

The loss happened, now it's how the boxer reacts to it. Lennox Lewis for example, lost twice, once to Oliver McCall, which he got revenge for a few years later and the shock against Hasim Rahman when he lost in 5 rounds by KO and then got the revenge win by KO in four rounds before the end of the same year.
Evander Holyfield - Lost to Riddick Bowe and the pair went on to have one of the best trilogies in heavyweight boxing.
Even 'the greatest' Muhammad Ali, lost to Joe Frazier and their trilogy is argueably one of if not the best ever trilogy in boxing but more accurately his fights against Leon spinks, underestimated him and lost, admitted it, moved on, improved and got the return win at the very end of his carrer when his skills had long faded.

Joshua needs to realise a loss isn't the time for making excuses and not have it hanging over him if the return fight happens, it's now a chance to improve and not just fight for the money and the return win but to establish a real legacy in the sport if he does go on to unify the heavyweight division, which is right within his grasp if he wanted to take the chance.

Especially as we've had multiple renditions of "reasons." Who's he trying to convince? Acha!

None of us know. It will be interesting. Maybe he totally beats up on Ruiz. Maybe Ruiz does the same thing he did last time. Maybe something in between.

If he sticks around, and I think he will, it'll only be for the glory. He sure as hell doesn't need the money.

Although we all think he should just STFU in fairness I guess it's not so easy when everybody is bombarding him with questions about what went wrong. What's he supposed to say, "That's classified" ?

To answer my own question what he should have said is "I'm not making any excuses. I just got beaten by a better man on the night" but whether that satisfies the inquisitor is another matter. The thing is he is a boxer not a politician or a PR man. He is by nature honest and eager to please. He will answer the question truthfully as he sees it.

Joshua wasn't at his best that night and he got beat by a very hungry (no jokes) young man who refused to be denied on the night.

I can believe Joshua when he says he wasn't as fired up as he should be. I certainly wouldn't compare this to the weird conspiracy theories the Internet was littered with after the fight.

He is essentially taking the blame himself, which is fine imo.

That's more than I'm betting. I don't know what's gonna happen. If I hear from the guy who writes the scripts and story lines then I'll bet. I like it when I got the odds in my favor, see.

Right now, internet books are offering a tasty +250 on still-no one-believes Andy Ruiz.

Joshua is an absurdly heavy -350 favorite, despite being pounded out the first time.

Remember when Tyson was battered around by Holyfield as a 7-1 favorite, after opening a 25-1 choice? Tyson was still installed as a nearly 3-1 favorite in the infamous rematch, even if Holyfield emphatically proved his superiority the first time.

We all know what happened in that one.

So grab those generous odds on Ruiz while you can. It will get bet down.

Expect wagerers to realize that the guy who wins the first one in overwhelming fashion, usually turns the trick again the second time around.

I see this scenario playing out much like Lewis/Rahman. Lewis did not give Hasim the proper respect in preparation or seriousness and paid the price. But it was evident in the rematch who was superior.

I like Ruiz. But a more prepared, focused, and composed Joshua is going to dismantle him in the rematch.

Lewis was careless and probably poorly trained in the first Rahman bout. He was also careless and lackadaisical in the first McCall fight.

But neither McCall or Rahman owned Lewis that night. Just 1 punch. They didn't necessarily show themselves to be overall superior to Lewis talentwise in those abbreviated bouts.

Ruiz however, simply outclassed Joshua over 7. Looked the part of the much better fighter. There was no one punch KO. Just a systematic beatdown.

Joshua is no Lewis when it comes to skills or ring IQ. Lewis is a top 10 ATG heavyweight. Joshua isn't on the same planet.
