You have chosen the easy answer. Every great fighter could be lumped into this category, but which one trumps the other.
For example, Bernard Hopkins skill (in my opinion), surpasses his athletic level however no doubt he took care of his body, to an obsessive level.

It's just Jones is so unique in his style, it makes things difficult. Some people are saying this is skill. Or was he just so athletic that he got away with being so different? The fact that when he slowed down in later years a lot of his 'skill' deteriorated leads me to believe he was a athletic freak rather than a supremely skilled boxer. Others have disagreed.

He's similar to Muhammad Ali in some ways, in that he fought his own way and it worked for him, right up until he began to decline physically.

It wasn't text book, but it worked for him.

You could not teach someone to fight like Roy Jones Jr.
Agree.

On the other hand others have emulated Ali, look at Hughie Fury, he's Ali or maybe better.

In terms of skill, Jones was no Harold Johnson.

Jones was extremely athletic and was unique in how he fit his style and skills to take full advantage of that. He was at his peak one of my favorite fighters to watch.

No one else has struggled with this. Maybe you don’t know as much as you think you do,

What isn’t text book is standing by the ropes, with both arms behind your back allowing your opponent to throw punches at you whilst their in punching range.
when i hear someone say text book what they usually mean is hands up. what they really seem to be saying when they say text book is that there is a right way to box and a wrong way to box. thats a pretty staunch description for something that is so far reaching and pretty mysterious. maybe you know something i dont.

heres a guy stealing his right hand, rolling under a check hook, and escaping out to his right.

is that text book?

As you know, that doesn't answer the question. But, thanks for the reply.

Since "all" seem to know what "athletic" is, what is it?

You are free to apply your own understanding and argue that. For example, some people may think speed is a skill, whereas I think it’s more an athletic attribute. It could be both.

But given your recent posts I fear this is just a bid for you to cause a scene as it seems you are a bit special and in need of attention.

If you have read the posts you’ll see that people have been able to understand and examples and context have been provided. Given that I think you are a special attention boy but if I’m wrong, apologise.

Lazboy, you asked the question. Don't you think you could define the two words? How can a meaningful answer be put forth if we all have different definitions of what skill and athleticism are. To my understanding, that is like everyone writing different languages that many -perhaps not all- don't understand.

Not sure I'm following your logic. You can provide your own understanding of athleticism or perhaps use a dictionary definition. Then put together a persuasive argument.

Here's an example from earlier on:

His reflexes and speed. Both offence and defence.
See, I understand that as more athleticism.
Some people may disagree with that. It's just about how persuasive the argument is. Words can have different applications in different contexts rather being literal all the time.

P.S There have been a number of meaningful answers already.

true, they would.
as to the question on athleticism. its speed, stamina, natural co-ordination and power, that sort of thing.
skill is acquired technique.
since all these top guys train for years & years the 2 go hand in hand.
but its clear to see that roy had some of the greatest athletic attributes from 160-175 that have ever been seen.
and as to the post regarding peds. roy was ridiculously ripped, allegedly failed a test, and went from 160 to heavy, keeping speed and power. i suspect that All top fighters may dabble with peds, some being more obvious than others.

as to skill. roy had a speedy style so thats what he specialised in. his co-ordination, power & speed were incredible.
his style enabled him to beat more technical boxers like hopkins & toney, without taking punishment in return, in his prime.

Roy did test positive for steroids for Richard Hall, a did Hall, the commissioner said Roy had 5-6x over the acceptable level. Roy claimed he tested positive because of a supplement. Few people seem to care about Roy using steroids, pick and choose the outrage I guess. He obviously was a phenomenal talent.

Outrage?

I repeat, repeatedly that there should be a clean league and a juiced league.
