if Mayweather beats Tszyu he becomes number 1 for me. A three weight world champion and beaten many guys in the top 15 P4P. Jose Luis Castillo, Diego Corrales are very good fighters. If he beats Tszyu then surely he is number 1.

I would have Tszyu at 2 at the moment, and yes I too think if he beats Mayweather he moves up to 1.

I don't think that Tszyu believes that Ricky has done enough to earn a shot at him yet. If Tszyu is smart he should not fight Ricky which would force him to take his WBO shot against Cotto. Then Kostya should think about fighting the winner. The IBF mandatory means nothing to Kostya, he is recognised as the undisputed by all the bodies and the press, he don't need to fight Ricky.
One of my mates was down London on Saturday to watch the fight and was talkling to Hatton and he tells me that he would welcome a fight with Cotto, the reason being that he feels he's got Cotto's number at the moment. He said that he would rather face Cotto now than in a few years time when he's matured into a better/more dangerous fighter

It's funny when people talk about Hattons chances with tszyu and Cotto. He has NO CHANCE with either and I'll tell you why.

In each of his fights, Hatton has been doing what he wants. He fights at his own fast pace and puts pressure on. he's happy working at that pace and he has good stamina. Although he was dropped in the Magee fight, Magee doesn't hit anywhere near as hard as Tszyu or Cotto so it's a very different proposition altogether. My point is, Hatton has been working at HIS OWN pace against fighters like faded Phillips/Olivera/Pederson, Vilches/Smith etc. His whole ideo of beating someone like Tszyu or Cotto is that he's make them work at a pace they don't like. That's ironic since Hatton will be the one fighting at THEIR pace. He can do what he does against the opposition he fights now but as soon as he gets blasted by Cotto or Tszyu on his way in, he'll have a different idea altogether. He has never been hit by someone like that. Providing he is not in a horizontal position afterwards, Hattons gonna be stung and he WON'T want to get hit like that again in case he gets KTFO.He's be workiong at THEIR PACE and he'll get picked off and KO'd quite quickly because he can't fight like that.

So, in actual fact, Hatton has no chance with Tszyu or Cotto.

The winner of Tszyu v Mayweather overtakes Hopkins in my book. Kostya will have an awesome body of work over a very long period of time, and in a division blessed with better talent than Hopkins too.

Mayweather will be a three weight champ with a win over a future hall of famer at his highest weight.

I think it's obvious that some of the fighters (like Phillips, Tackie and Oliveira) Hatton is beating up on are "fringe world-class" or "world class journeymen".

He is bashing them around hardly losing a round and doing what he wants.

This indicates to me that he will not be out of his depth at genuine world class.

However the fact that on Saturday Ricky was fighting an opponent whose biggest claim to fame (according to Sky) was taking Ben Tackie the full course 3 years ago (Hatton beat Tackie a year ago!!) means it doesn't look likely that we will see this anytime soon.

Hatton beat Tackie a year ago, where is the progress?!!!!

This fight wasn't about progress, it was about keeping Hatton busy whilst protecting his #1 contender status.

The claim to fame of Oliveria was a win, albeit quite a while ago

It's very hard to tell just how much the leap from fighting the opponents he has fought thus far to world elite level, against fighters in their prime

Part of me thinks Hatton will give anyone out there a hard fight, and part of me wonder whether he will just get dismantled facing off against fighters who can hurt him and who throw plenty of punches, and assert their own gameplan.

It's impossible to answer without seeing him actually take on an elite level fighter at or near their prime.

The same is also true of Cotto, although I think he has faced slightly more live opposition In Bailey, Pinto, N'dou, Sosa, and Ceballos, that Rios, Pedersen,

More importantly, I think Cotto has faced more dangerous fighters and unknown quantities than Hatton, though not by much.

The difference in their opposition is slight, but the rate of progress of Cotto is much more impressive.

For me, Cotto is the more versatile fighter, and has a little more poise than Hatton, who relies on his workrate a lot more, which could cost him when he starts getting hit back by a real puncher, which is something he has yet to face. He took a few from Tackie and Phillips, both of whom were shopworn, but neither produced the kind of workrate needed to test him. It's a little harder to tell how much Tackie had left, as he hasn't fought decent opposition since.

I lean toward thinking that Hatton's aggression and workrate will make him a handful for anyone, but his lack of punchpower in his headwork, and the need to be more cautious and protect himself against proper punchers, will negate some of his work.

I think Hatton v Cotto is a fantastic fight, and that's the one I would really love to see.

I am naturally cynical after the long wait, but fingers crossed.

I pretty much agree with you James, that whilst I wouldn’t tip Hatton to beat any of the World elite at Junior-Welter, I don’t feel he would disgrace himself.

He is far better at Light-Welter than Danny Williams at Heavy for example and wouldn’t be exposed in the same way.

If you look at the Light-Welterweight division as the Premiership, I have Ricky down as a Liverpool or Newcastle.

Very good analysis there my friend. I agree with all your points. :TU:
