i'm not a doctor but he appears to most likely have suffered from a "Border-Line Personality Disorder"
( a serious mental illness which wasn't recognized by the Psychiatritry World until 1982)
in his earlier years
something he may have the rest of his life.
A person with such a condition needs good people they can trust and a solid set and setting to thrive.
