I remember a list of all the top fighters the Ingles had from scratch, just entering the gym the first time. Now that is impressive.
The trainers only as good as the boxer
I can't agree with this.
Brendan Ingle was obviously such a huuuge personality, coach and psychologist that he had the ability to make his fighters better people not just better boxers. If he was "only as good as the boxers" then how to explain the medium-sized regional city of Sheffield producing so many British, European and World Champions ?
Something in the water ?

The Ingle gym may have had more successful fighters if they trained them in a conventional way. Naz Hamed had the reflexes and power of an all time great but didn't seem to have a clue about the fundamentals of boxing when he was getting taught the A to Z of boxing by Barerra.

Possible.

But if coaches are really only as good as their raw material then why have them in any sport ?
Do you think Brendan was a bad coach - I'd like to argue that point - surely I'd win ?!

He was definitely a good coach and a great man by most accounts. I'm split on the Ingle gym in general. I'm just not sure I agree with the training style in terms of developing fighters but at the end of the day they have made some world champs from scratch so they must be doing things right.

To be fair to Hamed and the Ingles, they weren't together for that fight, or may before it and Naz wasn't in his best form at all. Not saying on his best day he would have beaten Barrera but his timing was terrible that night and wasn't showcasing the Ingle style at its best.

I think Dom Ingle would have been the right choice for Tyson. Not sure working with Sugar Hill is going to work out well? I know Tyson spent time in the Kronk but its going to be a short camp (8/10 weeks?!) and to get any real relationship is going to be tricky.

Having said that, Tyson hasn't really got to learn anything, its all there, he just needs to stay focused and dedicated.

Brendan trained Naz fromthe age of 7. At 21 he became our youngest ever world champion. He defended that title 11 times, beating other champions, before Brendan told him he was no longer going to train him.
The fact that he trained poorly and lost a fight 3 years later had nothing to do with Brendan's coaching.

I don't think he was much worse for the Barrera fight to be honest. He was still in his prime. His record is full of sensational wins but not against the likes of Barrera. You've got a guy with natural pound for pound power and world class speed and reflexes. In terms of natural talent he is up there on Roy Jones level. Yet he's getting schooled in his prime by Barrera who, lets be frank, was beatable. He'd already been beaten by a slick fighter in Junior Jones. Walloped to the canvas in fact and beaten comprehensively in their second fight. I don't think you can just absolve the Ingle gym of any responsibility for the way his career panned out after he left as he was probably too old to learn new tricks at that stage.

At the same time he was a very exciting fighter and his personality and character was definitely developed to a large extent by Brendans training style and the atmosphere of the Ingle gym so it's a tough question but in terms of boxing ability I think he would have achieved much more if he'd come through a philly gym for example.
