Like an ‘Ali’ thing to do.

Thing is, the evidence is there, people, states, countries, they all know what’s going on there, but they’re choosing to ignore it. Carrying on like normal.

At work, we partnered up with Amnesty International. And one of the cases was an Egyptian man, newly married, has been taken away from his wife and child and in these detention camps.

So you know what. I hope Beterbiev puts on a show and does either say or wear something..
Just like Ali. Man, what a legend he was. He kept everybody awake in all our eastern countries; an interesting thing is, my father who despises this sport, even sometimes mocking me for following with passion, he himself stood awake or woke up in time for all those legendary Ali bouts. So maybe if Beterbiev does that, he has a chance to achieve a similar success.

World needs many awakenings, and this situation is an opportunity for one of these.

Wondering how long can be Beterbiev in prime. He is 35 years old. Maybe he should forget about that Chinese guy even if it will cost him one belt maybe. And get in the ring with Bivol and Ramirez this year. I am really interested what golden Bob will do with light heavyweight division in 2020. Even Hart/Smith winner seems better like a option than Meng Fanlong to me.

There is no way Ramirez will get into the ring with Beterbiev.

On the same card one of the TV judges had Andre Dirrell winning a fight 120-95 or something like that

At age of 35, Beterbiev has maximum of 2 years of prime ahead of him, maybe less. It is not wise to waste time on Meng Fanlong, especially when there is a problem with making the fight. Dmitri Bivol should be primary target, then winner of Smith-Alvarez. I dont know if Gilberto Ramirez will accept the fight. Gvozdyk is a big win, but time is running out if he wanna do another serious things in sport.

Previously targeted for March 28th at Chicago’s Wintrust Arena, Gennadiy Golovkin’s mandatory IBF title defense against Kamil Szeremeta is now “likely” to take place in April. ESPN’s Steve Kim further reports that Vergil Ortiz will take the date for a bout in Inglewood, which could compete with Artur Beterbiev-Meng Fanlong.

A deal for the Artur Beterbiev-Meng Fanlong light heavyweight title fight has been completed.

Contracts have been finalized for the Beterbiev-Fanlong fight to take place March 28 at Videotron Centre in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada. ESPN, which first reported that this deal was completed, will televise Beterbiev’s mandatory defense of his IBF 175-pound championship versus Fanlong.

The unbeaten Beterbiev resides in Montreal, thus this is a home-province fight for the Russian-born champion. The likelihood of their fight taking place in Quebec became greater once Bob Arum’s Top Rank Inc., Beterbiev’s co-promoter, was declared the winner of the purse bid for this IBF-mandated match by default.

Longjoy Sports, a Chinese promoter, initially won the purse bid by submitting a $1,900,000 offer and intended to bring the fight to Fanlong’s native China. Once Longjoy Sports failed to meet deposit deadlines attached to its winning bid, Top Rank won by default with a bid of $1,315,000.

Taking their fight to Quebec City alleviated Beterbiev’s concerns about traveling to China to fight Fanlong. Beterbiev is a devout Muslim and didn’t want to fight there because the Chinese government has mistreated Muslims, many of whom have been held in detention centers.

Beterbiev-Fanlong: No Coronavirus Fears For Challenger

With the coronavirus epidemic in China, some observers feared that Chinese mandatory challenger Meng Fanlong would not be able to face WBC, IBF light heavyweight world champion Artur Beterbiev on the scheduled date of March 28 at the Videotron Center in Canada.

Promoter Yvon Michel of GYM, who is helping stage the event, has already reached out to Dino Duva of Roc Nation Sports to ensure the challenger was able to make the date.

"I contacted the promoter of Meng (Dino Duva) when the first fatal cases of the coronavirus were declared,"
said Michel to The Montreal Journal. "However, he quickly reassured me that his boxer had lived in New Jersey for a few years and that he had not returned to China for some time."

The Beterbiev clan, Top Rank and GYM can therefore focus on promoting the event on March 28. Fanlong is about to sign his contract to face the unified champion.

"Our lawyers are already working on Meng's visa applications,"
added Michel. "We would like him to be present at our press conference for the launch of the promotion."

Fanlong (16-0, 10 KOs) became the mandatory challenger when he won a final eliminator against Adam Deines in June of 2019.

Beterbiev is coming of the biggest win of his career from last October, when he stopped undefeated Oleksandr Gvozdyk in eleven rounds to unify the WBC, IBF world titles in Philadelphia.

Ya, watched him, no chance. Bert should win by hard KO within the first half. Meng has decent hands actually but he gets open when he throws and is levels below Bert in fire power. Also been down a few times already.

I hate when mandatory challenger is not "challenging enough". You must deal with them if you not want lose belt. And if you are not big star, belts matters a lot. Beterbiev is already 35, wondering how long can he be at prime.

Ya, it's no challenge of an opponent, though it is one where we should get to see a pretty good display from the champ. Much better than having a mismatch that goes like Andrade's fights

If you're Beterbiev you can have a hole or two in your defense and still be pretty damn safe.

Undercard information

Janibek Alimkhanuly will bring his brand of “Qazaq Style” north of the border. Alimkhanuly, the latest middleweight sensation from Kazakhstan, will defend his WBO Global and WBC Continental Americas belts in a 10-rounder against fellow unbeaten Issah Samir on Saturday, March 28 at Videotron Centre in Quebec City, Canada.

Alimkhanuly-Samir will open the ESPN-televised doubleheader (10 p.m. ET) featuring WBC/IBF light heavyweight world champion Artur Beterbiev’s title defense against mandatory challenger Meng Fanlong.

The undercard (ESPN+, 7 p.m. ET) will see the return of heavyweight contender Oscar “Kaboom” Rivas in a 10-rounder against 2004 U.S. Olympian Devin Vargas. Rivas, from Colombia, has made Montreal his home since turning pro in 2009.

“What an undercard we have in Quebec City, as Janibek is truly one of the special young talents in the entire sport,” said Top Rank chairman Bob Arum. “Oscar Rivas is a dangerous freight train of a heavyweight, and he is in the mix to fight for a world title in 2020. It is going to be an action-packed evening.”

Alimkhanuly (8-0, 4 KOs), who is trained by Buddy McGirt and managed by three-time BWAA Manager of the Year Egis Klimas, represented Kazakhstan at the 2016 Rio Olympics and captured gold at both the 2013 Asian and World Championships. Ranked No. 4 by the WBO, Alimkhanuly took the express lane to contention, besting veteran spoiler Vaughn Alexander in only his fourth pro fight. He went 4-0 with three knockouts in 2019, including a sixth-round knockout over former Canadian and NABO middleweight champion Albert Onolunose last November in Fresno, Calif.

“I only want the toughest competition. That’s why I am a contender after eight pro fights,” Alimkhanuly said. “This is a great opportunity to showcase my skills live on ESPN. I will leave Canada with the ‘0’ on my record. I want to thank Samir for taking the fight, but he won’t be able to solve the ‘Qazaq Style’ puzzle.”

Samir (18-0, 15 KOs) is the latest world-class pugilist from Accra, Ghana, a proud fighting city that has produced world champions Azumah Nelson, Ike Quartey, David Kotey, Joshua Clottey and Richard Commey, among many others. He represented Ghana at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and turned pro in 2011, knocking out eight opponents in his first year in the paid ranks. Samir won the Ghanaian middleweight title over veteran Philip Kotey in 2015 and, following a nearly three-year layoff, he returned to action in June 2018. He is 4-0 with three knockouts since then and will be making his first professional appearance away from his homeland.

“I am coming to Canada to steal the show,” Samir said. “Every time I enter the ring, I fight for Ghana and our great champions who paved the way. Janibek is skilled fighter, but I know he has not fought anyone like me.”

Rivas (26-1, 18 KOs), who recently signed a co-promotional deal with Top Rank, had an action-packed 2019. He knocked out former world title challenger Bryant Jennings in January and knocked down — and nearly knocked out — Dillian Whyte in July before dropping a unanimous decision for the WBC interim heavyweight world title. Ranked No. 3 by the WBC, Rivas is still in the thick of the heavyweight mix despite the Whyte loss. Vargas (22-6, 9 KOs) revitalized his career in January with an upset victory over 2004 Puerto Rican Olympian Victor Bisbal. Last August, he knocked out then-unbeaten Irish prospect Niall Kennedy in five rounds.

“The past year, I have proven I am one of the world’s elite heavyweights," Rivas said. "This year, my goal is to prove that I deserve my chance to take on the best heavyweight boxer in the world, Tyson Fury, who is also under contract with Top Rank. On March 28, I will smash my opponent with a spectacular ‘Kaboom.’"

In other undercard action on ESPN+:

Wilfried Seyi (8-0, 4 KOs), a native of Cameroon who calls Montreal home, will fight Alan Carrillo (11-4, 8 KOs) in an eight-rounder at super middleweight. Sey represented Cameroon at the 2016 Rio Olympics, and he recently qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

In an eight-round super bantamweight battle, Ismael Camacho Garcia (12-2-3, 5 KOs) will face Montreal-based veteran Vislan Dalkhaev (12-1, 3 KOs), who has won three in a row.

Heavyweight prospect Guido “The Gladiator” Vianello (6-0, 6 KOs), a 2016 Italian Olympian, will face an opponent to be named in an eight-rounder.

Montreal-based super middleweight KO artist Christian “Solide” Mbilli (16-0, 15 KOs) will face Mexican veteran Felipe “El Pinocho” Ugalde (18-1, 15 KOs) in a 10-rounder.

Beterbiev-Meng Still On For 3/28, But Site Sought Outside Of Quebec

The Artur Beterbiev-Meng Fanlong fight was still on for March 28 as of Friday afternoon.

BS.com has been informed by multiple sources, though, that co-promoters Top Rank Inc. and Yvon Michel are seeking a site outside of Canada to stage their fight for Beterbiev’s IBF and WBC light heavyweight titles. Beterbiev, a Montreal resident raised in Russia, is supposed to make a mandatory defense of his IBF 175-pound championship against China’s Meng two weeks from Saturday night at Videotron Centre in Quebec City, Canada.

If the Beterbiev-Fanlong fight still happens March 28, it is not expected to be held in Quebec City due to coronavirus concerns. The government in the province of Quebec temporarily banned gatherings of over 250 people Thursday.

That precautionary measure would prevent fans from attending a Beterbiev-Meng card at Videotron Centre. That fight likely would take place without fans in attendance if it is moved to a venue in the United States on March 28, but by staging it somewhere within the U.S. it at least eliminates potential complications from international travel for many people involved in working the event.

Fanlong, a resident of China, lives in Bloomfield, New Jersey, when training for fights in nearby Paterson. Beterbiev trains in Montreal.

ESPN is supposed to televise the bout between Beterbiev (15-0, 15 KOs) and Fanlong (16-0, 10 KOs). Depending on how the coronavirus pandemic plays out, the Beterbiev-Fanlong card could be postponed altogether.

On Thursday night, Top Rank, the promotional company founded by Bob Arum, indefinitely postponed its shows scheduled for Saturday night and Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden’s Hulu Theater in New York.

Whenever and wherever he faces Fanlong, Beterbiev will fight for the first time since he knocked down Oleksandr Gvozdyk three times in the 10th round and stopped him October 18 in Philadelphia. Beterbiev won the WBC light heavyweight title from Ukraine’s Gvozdyk (17-1, 14 KOs) in a main event ESPN aired from Temple University’s Liacouras Center.

Beterbiev-Fanlong, Inoue-Casimero Among Fights Postponed By Top Rank

Bob Arum announced Monday that all of his promotional company’s cards scheduled for the remainder of March and all of April have been postponed indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The announcement followed a flurry of postponements throughout the boxing world Monday. The shows Arum’s Top Rank Inc. had scheduled for March and April will be rescheduled “as soon as it’s safe and reasonable to do so,” according to a press release issued Monday.

“The health and safety of our fighters, staff and ESPN’s incredible production team is the most important thing as we plan our next steps,” Arum said. “We look forward to the day when we can bring our loyal fans world-class boxing once again, but exercising caution is the most prudent thing to do at this moment.”

The two most prominent fights postponed by Top Rank on Monday were to feature undefeated champions Artur Beterbiev and Naoya Inoue.

Fanlong Far From Family, Dealing With Pandemic Instead Of Battling Beterbiev

Meng Fanlong figured he would weigh in today for the biggest fight of his life.

The unbeaten Chinese challenger was supposed to test himself against Artur Beterbiev on Saturday night at Videotron Centre in Quebec City, Canada. They were scheduled to fight for Beterbiev’s IBF and WBC light heavyweight titles in a 12-round main event ESPN would’ve televised.

For Fanlong, it would’ve been the relatively unknown southpaw’s opportunity to prove that he can succeed at boxing’s elite level.

Instead, a disappointed Fanlong is trying to pass the time in the condominium he rents in Bloomfield, New Jersey, waiting for the Beterbiev bout to be rescheduled once the coronavirus pandemic ends. Self-isolation is even more challenging when you’re in a foreign country, half a world away from your wife, 2-year-old daughter and the rest of your family.

“I’m very frustrated,” Fanlong told Boxing Scene through his translator. “This is the longest training camp I’ve ever had and I’m very well prepared. The fight was around the corner, but I understand they had to cancel it because of the pandemic. Even if I’m frustrated, I believe everybody’s health and safety is the most important thing.”

Fanlong (16-0, 10 KOs) trained for 3½ months in nearby Paterson, New Jersey, before promoter Bob Arum announced March 16 that the Beterbiev-Fanlong card had been postponed indefinitely.

The 32-year-old Fanlong contemplated returning to his hometown of Chifeng, China, once his title shot got pushed back, but going home comes with complications.

“My plan is to stay here in New Jersey because remaining here as of right now is the safest thing to do,” Fanlong said. “Going back to China right now, I would face a 14-day quarantine and I would have to follow up with a lot of procedures. So, I would say that for the foreseeable future I would stay in New Jersey. With this current situation, we don’t know when or where the fight is going to be. So, I would like to wait a little bit more to see what’s going to happen with this fight before I make a further decision.”

Fanlong’s family is healthy in China, where that country slowly but surely is returning to normalcy. That gives the 2012 Olympian peace of mind and hope that the United States is on a similar path, but the frustration is obvious in his voice.

“It is difficult because the only thing I can do right now is stay home, basically,” Fanlong said. “I can’t train. Going to the gym is a risk. I have a limited area where I can stay active. Between that, and then not having my family here, it’s very difficult. But I believe that the U.S. administration is working very hard in controlling this virus. I wish things will get back to normal soon. That would really encourage me a lot.”

The 6-feet-2 Fanlong came to the United States to train in September 2014, along with fellow Chinese prospects Zhang Zhilei and Zhimin Wang.

Zhilei, a 6-feet-6, 260-pound heavyweight who won a silver medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, is 21-0 and has produced 16 knockouts. The huge southpaw is ranked by the IBF (No. 13) and the WBO (No. 10).

Wang, who has competed at junior welterweight and lightweight, is 11-3 (3 KOs). Two of his losses were decision defeats to former IBF junior welterweight champ Ivan Baranchyk (20-1, 13 KOs) and emerging contender Shohjahon Ergashev (18-0, 16 KOs).

Fanlong, who is promoted by Roc Nation Sports, is the first of that trio to earn a title shot. He has been matched moderately, but he became the IBF’s mandatory challenger last year.

That designation at least guarantees that he’ll get his shot at the hard-hitting Beterbiev (15-0, 15 KOs) once the boxing business resumes. Fanlong still spent approximately $20,000 on a training camp that he can’t recoup.

“A lot of money was wasted in training camp and Fanlong had to cover the costs,”
said Shaun George, Fanlong’s trainer. “A lot of money came out of his pocket just to get ready in training camp. Him staying here in the United States, paying sparring partners, bringing sparring partners in. There’s a lot of different things that were happening in training camp. But the sport of boxing isn’t like the NBA, where they still get paid even if they don’t play.

“But he works hard, he never complains and he’s a student of the game. He was definitely ready for the fight. I believe that it would’ve been a major upset. I know what they’re expecting him to do, and I know what he’s going to do. After all that hard work, I’m just sad to see that the fight didn’t happen. But it’s understandable with what’s happening right now.”

George, a retired light heavyweight who worked with the Chinese Olympic teams, has a close relationship with Fanlong. He feels for his fighter, however, because Fanlong is dealing with this pandemic without the support of his family.

“He’s here by himself, he doesn’t speak English, and his wife and his kid are in China,” George said. “They went through the whole coronavirus thing without him there. And now, for him to leave the United States it would cost him a lot of money. It’s hard for him. Can you imagine being in a country by yourself, when you have no family or friends here?

“It’s not an easy thing for him to do. The only thing he does is box. He doesn’t have a day job or anything else. Now he can’t box and he’s missing out on a big payday. This is his livelihood. I’m upset for him that he didn’t get this fight because I know it would’ve been a spectacular fight for him.”

Fanlong is trying to remain optimistic while waiting for the chance to get back to work.

“I did this for my daughter, for my family to have better lives,”
Fanlong said. “So, I have to be somebody. I have to do something. That’s why I train so hard. That’s why I’m challenging for a world title.

“I’ve made a lot of sacrifices and I’ve given up a lot in pursuit of the ultimate goal, which is to become a world champion. But my love and passion for boxing is still there. It hasn’t changed.”

Artur Beterbiev Would Have No Problem Fighting in The UK

WBC, IBF light heavyweight Artur Beterbiev would have no problem with traveling over to the UK for a fight, according to Todd DuBoef, the president of Top Rank.

Beterbiev was expected to make a mandatory defense against Meng Fanlong in Canada, but the contest was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"Beterbiev would fight in the UK in two seconds and he wouldn't see it as an obligation," DuBoef told Sky Sports. "He is a complete, absolute beast! Anything in front of him, he takes down. He disregards 'who' or 'where'. If you're in front of him, goodbye. That's it. Like Vasiliy Lomachenko, Beterbiev wants to fight the best and has no issue with where a fight might be."

DuBoef explains that his company was eager to sign Beterbiev after hearing stories about his fearsome in-ring reputation for a long time. Beterbiev officially signed with the company in 2019.

"We were aware of the legend of Beterbiev and his brutal nature of dismantling guys. His ability to seek and destroy is so compelling. But we didn't know the interest that everyone would have in him," DuBoef said.

The Russian puncher has been out of the ring since his knockout win over Oleksandr Gvozdyk in their high stakes unification back in October of last year in Philadelphia.

One of the opponents that Beterbiev could face in the UK is undefeated rising contender Joshua Buatsi, who does not appear to be afraid of the potential challenge.

"I have learning to do and they are dangerous fighters but I am a dangerous fighter too,"
Buatsi said.

"Who executes the right way? With more learning and guidance, when the time is right, I'll be ready to handle these guys. I believe, in the ring, I'm as dangerous as they are."

Unified light heavyweight world champion Artur Beterbiev’s mandatory defense against Meng Fanlong, one of the many fights postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, has a new date and location.

Plans call for the bout to take place on Sept. 25 at the Ekaterinburg Expo in Ekaterinburg, Russia, and air on an ESPN platform in the United States, Top Rank told BS.com on Tuesday.

“The financial deal has been made for the Russian promoter to put on the fight,” Top Rank chairman Bob Arum said, referring to organizer Kirill Shchekutyev, who is involved with the Russian Boxing Federation, and his group. “Having the TV (rights) in the U.S. was part of the deal, a cornerstone of the deal we made.”

The fight was initially slated to headline a Top Rank Boxing on ESPN card on March 28 and take place at the Videotron Centre in Quebec City, Canada, which is not far from Beterbiev’s adopted hometown of Montreal.

Beterbiev, 35, represented Russia in the 2008 and 2012 Olympics but he has never boxed professionally in his home country. In preparation for his pro debut, which came in June 2013, Beterbiev relocated to Montreal after signing with Canadian promoter Yvon Michel before later signing with Top Rank.

Beterbiev has had 10 of his pro bouts in Canada and five in the United States, but Arum said Beterbiev was looking forward to fighting in his home country in the next fight.

“He’s very anxious to fight in Russia because (the Russian group) can pay him the amount of money that he thinks he is entitled to, which he probably is, but our arrangement for this fight was based on there being a substantial boost from the live gate in Quebec City. But we can’t do the fight with a gate because of the coronavirus," Arum said.

Beterbiev (15-0, 15 KOs), who is boxing’s only current titleholder with a perfect knockout percentage, knocked out Enrico Koelling in the 12th round to win a vacant 175-pound world title in November 2017 and has successfully defended the title three times, none bigger than in his last fight. That was on Oct. 18 at the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia, where Beterbiev knocked out then-undefeated Oleksandr Gvozdyk in the 10th round of a very competitive fight to unify two world titles and also become the lineal world champion. Gvozdyk later announced his retirement.

The southpaw Meng (16-0, 10), 32, who was a 2012 Olympian, won a unanimous decision against then-undefeated Adam Deines on June 1 in Macau, China, in a world title elimination bout to become Beterbiev’s mandatory challenger. Meng returned for a second-round knockout of Gilberto Rubio on Oct. 5 in a stay-busy fight before his chance to fight for the world title.

The bout has shuffled to three different dates and sites. Initially, Chinese promoter Longjoy Sports, which has a working relationship with Meng promoter Roc Nation Sports, won a purse bid for the bout on Dec. 30, offering $1.9 million to beat the offer of $1.315 million from Top Rank. But Longjoy Sports eventually defaulted on its bid, giving underbidder Top Rank control of the promotion and scheduled the bout for March 28 in Quebec City before it had to scuttle those plans due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Time is running out on Artur Beterbiev’s career because he’ll be 36 years of age by the time he’s provided with the earliest opportunity to engage in a meaningful marquee bout.

I’m going to make a bold prediction, by claiming that in two years, almost half the current big-name top-ten world-rated light heavyweights would have either retired or aged to the point they’re used as steppingstones.

And this includes the likes of:

• Artur Beterbiev
• Sergey Kovalev
• Eleider Alvarez
• Jean Pascal
• Badou Jack
• Maksim Vlasov

So the various networks and promoters have to get their skates on and orchestrate high-profile bouts involving the guys mentioned above.

If they don’t do it soon, within the next twelve months or so, then they might never get another chance.

As ridiculous as this might sound, within a couple of years or so, Dmitry Bivol, Gilberto Ramirez or Canelo might end up becoming the top dog at 175lbs (due mainly to the process of elimination).
