The timeline of events for the WBA regular world heavyweight championship are riddled with drugs and controversial practices:
• Alexander Povetkin vacates the WBA regular world title, to challenge Wladimir Klitschko, with the Russian subsequently
failing multiple drug tests later on his career
• Ruslan Chagaev beats
Fres Oquendo in highly-controversial circumstances, to capture the regular vacant version of the WBA's world heavyweight championship, due to the perceived corruption of RUSADA and the WBA
•
Fres Oquendo successfully files lawsuits appealing the RUSADA testing protocols failing to adhere to WADA’s rules & the WBA’s misconduct of their handling of his bout against Ruslan Chagaev
• Lucas Browne defeats Ruslan Chagaev to capture the WBA regular world title, but then
fails a
drug test
• Lucas Browne is reinstated as the WBA’s champion and ordered to defend his title against
Fres Oquendo, but the American had to withdraw from the bout due to injury, so he was ordered to face Shannon Briggs instead
• Lucas Browne is then stripped of his WBA regular world title for
failing his second
drug test within an eight-month period
• The WBA order Shannon Briggs and
Fres Oquendo to compete for the vacant WBA regular world title
• Shannon Briggs
fails a
drug test and the fight is called-off
• Oquendo’s WBA world title bout against Manuel Charr was then called off, due to the German
failing a
drug test
• Oquendo then rejected a highly-lucrative WBA world title shot against Jarrell Miller, because ‘Big Baby’ didn’t want to undergo VADA testing. Miller then subsequently
tested positive at least four times for
three different banned substances whilst preparing for the AJ bout
• The WBA then decided to reinstate Manuel Charr as their regular world heavyweight champion, despite
failing a
drug test
•
Fres Oquendo’s reluctance to face a
proven drug cheat cost him his world title shot, which has resulted in Manuel Charr being ordered to defend his regular WBA title against interim WBA champion, Trevor Bryan.
• For the record, Trevor Bryan earned his shot at the interim WBA strap by defeating two fighters with just FOUR WINS in 48 BOUTS between them
• Trevor Bryan captured the WBA's vacant interim title by beating BJ Flores, a former cruiserweight contender who was inactive for fourteen months, lost his previous bout at cruiserweight and then only managed to subsequently overcome two boxers with 26 losses between them
• The WBA imposed a purse bid deadline for the Manuel Charr versus Trevor Bryan bout for the 17th May 2019. However, the WBA removed the purse bid deadline when they thought that both camps were close to agreeing terms, which was premature because no progress has been made on this issue
• Trevor Bryan hasn’t fought for 18 months, but still retains ownership of the WBA’s interim world title
• Manual Charr hasn’t fought for 27 months, but still retains ownership of the WBA’s regular world title
• Neither Trevor Bryan nor Manual Charr have any plans to fight in the near future and the WBA haven’t ordered them to defend their silly titles
• Manual Charr recently claimed the following:
“I am not interested in a fight against Dillian Whyte. He is not a sportsman and not a challenge for me. He is an irrelevant man… This athlete should not be given a platform for a world championship.”
• Even though
Fres Oquendo rejected a guaranteed opportunity to face Manuel Charr, he made the following claim:
“I want my $325,000 escrow funds and to be declared champion by challenger’s default because of drug use which caused me and my boxing career irreparable damages…”
• It’s been almost six years since
Fres Oquendo’s most recent victory and he continues to be classed amongst the top-15 in the world by the WBA. He’s on the cusp of turning 47 years of age and the last time he competed was in 2014
I guess a few people might get upset with me if I claimed the WBA to be an utterly rancid governing body!
