Re: Golovkin Derevyenchenko
Watched this fight again myself the other day, personally had GGG edging it but some really close rounds in there that could be read the other way and so I’m sure there’s a decent case to be made for a tight victory either way.
GGG was not at his best and credit to Derevyanchenko for putting him under that pressure and fighting at a pace GGG seemed to struggle with. That said I thought despite being below par GGG deserved plenty of credit for getting through this with a win, he had to dig really deep against a younger fresher looking fighter, showed plenty of heart and sufficient quality to edge it. Speculation GGG was ill in the lead up to the fight, which may explain a thing or two, and is a more preferable reason for this performance rather than the inevitable age catching up with him.
Losing to Jacobs and now GGG is no shame for Derevyanchenko, he’s shown he can mix it with, and trouble, the very best in the division. Ranked number with the WBC, if Canelo isn’t interested in him then perhaps the Jermall Charlo fight could be a realistic option for the Ukrainian.
