Let’s be real here, if he had any interest in this type of depravity he wouldn’t be posting it on his Instagram, he’d be keeping it quiet - he was obviously horrified and naïvely and stupidly posted a screenshot of the culprits face - I think in a misguided attempt to do what he thought was the right thing.

That sounds very plausible. First, it isn't everyone's first reaction to go to the police, and second not everyone understands that some material just cannot be published at all no matter what the context is. A different example - think how many people have been done for posting Jon Venables' picture as an adult not knowing the consequences.
